From Mendelssohn to Wagner Being the Memoirs of J. W. Davies on Forty Years Music Critic of "The Times"
Davison, James William (Davison, Henry -- compiler),

Hardcover (Original Cloth) Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: Various. First Edition. XX, 540 pages, last page blank, includes frontispiece with a fox to tissue guard, and 43 other illustrations (mostly full page) of persons mentioned, with, nine facsimile letters including several affixed with linen to enable them to fold out. Includes also a list of articles, and index. Bound in the original blue cloth of the publisher, with gilt titling to the spine and top edge of text block gilded. Foxing/offset tanning to both end pages, scattered foxing throughout the book, rear hinged where being exposed, flecking of both the front and rear panels, with rubbing of the corners and head and tail of the spine. "James William Davison was a critic of music and musicians who worked from about the year 1835 until within a week or two of his death in 1885. For over 30 years of that half-century he was an active member of the staff of the "Times" and chiefly in that capacity exercised considerable influence over the course of musical events in England. The period 1835-85, so far as regards secular music in England, is marked, principally, by three movements. Taking them in the order in which they occurred, there was, first, the effort at formation of a native school -- and this at a time when the genius of Mendelssohn was the rising son of modern music. Soon afterwards may be observed the beginning of that music education of the people which was, gradually, to lead to what may be called the democratisation of good concerts." -- from the preface page V Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The John McPhee Reader
McPhee, John,
ISBN: 0374517193
Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 1985. Reprint
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. Reprint. The John McPhee Reader, first published in 1976, is comprised of selections from the author's first twelve books. In 1965, John McPhee published his first book, A Sense of Where You Are; a decade later, he had published eleven others. His fertility, his precision and grace as a stylist, his wit and uncanny brilliance in choosing subject matter, his crack storytelling skills have made him into one of our best writers: a journalist whom L.E. Sissman ranked with Liebling and Mencken, who Geoffrey Wolff said "is bringing his work to levels that have no measurable limit," who has been called "a master craftsman" so many times that it is pointless to number them. Reading creases on the spine, age toning of the rear panel, and pencil note & signature on the inside of the rear cover. Otherwise no damage to describe. The book is edited, with an introduction by William L Howarth. Size: Mid Sized Paperback ( 7¾" - 9¾" tall ). XXIV, 390 pages.. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Quantity Available: 1. Looking for a Ship
McPhee, John,
ISBN: 0374523193
Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 1991. Reprint
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. Reprint. McPhee joined a friend, merchant mariner Andy Chase, on a 42-day voyage from Charleston, S.C., through the Panama Canal, down the Pacific coast of South America. A gem of a book, this leisurely, unpretentious log is a paean to the United States Merchant Marine, a declining institution battered by international competition and lowered cargo rates. The ship's New England captain "couldn't find his way around a traffic circle" but manages to outmaneuver a tropical storm. Porpoises and albatrosses accompany the SS Stella Lykes on a cruise laden with much talk of stowaways, collisions and cocaine smuggling, of pirates both legendary and contemporary (the modern variety carry bolt-cutters and walkie-talkies). McPhee's ( The Control of Nature ) clean, lean prose displays his sharp eye for telling detail and arresting incident. Size: Mid Sized Paperback ( 7¾" - 9¾" tall ). 252 pages. A very clean secondhand copy, with no damage apart from age toning of the page edges. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: .5. It is a chronicle of journalists at war, of the rage, humour and frustration of the correspondence who spend their lives reporting the first draft of history, of their occasional courage – and sometimes their deaths. It is also a deeply personal memoir that moves from Fisk's own presence on the front lines of the Iran-Iraqi war in the 1980s to the experience of his father, 2nd Lt Bill Fisk, in the trenches of the Somme in 1918." – from the rear panel blurb. Instead, they sealed his fate as a political pariah." -- from the rear panel blurb.
