Running Amok - when News Deadlines, Family and Foreign
Bowling, Mark
ISBN: 0733620426
Hodder 2006  2006
Trade paperback. 308pp. index. Very good. It was supposed to be his dream job. Mark Bowling, a foreign correspondent with the respected Australian Broadcasting Corporation, was assigned to cover Indonesia. His arrival in Jakarta coincided with the downfall of President Suharto after more than three decades. So began a four-year roller-coaster ride for a journalist covering a nation's dangerous descent into turmoil.Mark's book is a uniquely personal exploration of the rich but frenetic life of a foreign correspondent. At times his days swung out of control as he juggled news story deadlines with commitments to his young family. He travelled across the islands of Indonesia documenting historic events familiar to many of us who live in this region - East Timor's bloody struggle for independence, separatist crises in Aceh and West Papua, and religious conflicts in Ambon. He searched for signs of humanity and dignity in a society rife with violence, poverty, prejudice and greed.Mark was not alone on this posting. His wife Kim and their two young children moved with him from Australia to Jakarta and had to settle into a very different life there.

Canonic Texts in Media Research, Are there any? Should there be? What about these?
Katz, Peters, et-al, Elihu, John (editors)
ISBN: 0745629342
Polity, United Kingdom, 2010. Reprint
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. Reprint. Publisher Marketing: ARE THERE ANY? Many of us have our own canonic texts - the kind that won't go away. We tell them that their time has passed, that it's embarrassing they're still around, but they turn up repeatedly on our reading lists and in our bibliographies. They inspire us, haunt us, argue with us -- but they won't leave. Typically, we keep them to ourselves. SHOULD THERE BE? Of course there should be, and there's no reason to hide them. Canons (and saints) should be shared, because they define fields and communities. These texts are not simply monuments, however. They are alive and breathing, standing the test of time by shedding old meanings and assuming new ones. The minimal care they need - occasional brushing off and bulb-changing - is well worth the trouble. HOW ABOUT THESE? The field of media studies is now more than 50 years old, and the contributors to this volume offer their own candidates for canonization. Each of the thirteen essays in the book presents a critical reading of one of these classics and debates its candidacy. You are invited to disagree. The texts are summarized, analysed and re-examined for their contemporary relevance. They are grouped together in schools (Chicago, Columbia, Frankfurt, Toronto, British Cultural Studies) to highlight the different perspectives that characterize the field. This book offers thirteen pairs of shoulders to stand on, the better to see the field of media studies. It will serve as an excellent teaching text for advanced students in communications and media and cultural studies. Trade Paperback. Size: 180mm - 250mm. 265 pages. Foxing/offset tanning to both end pages, scattered foxing throughout the book, rear hinged where being exposed, flecking of both the front and rear panels, with rubbing of the corners and head and tail of the spine. "James William Davison was a critic of music and musicians who worked from about the year 1835 until within a week or two of his death in 1885. For over 30 years of that half-century he was an active member of the staff of the "Times" and chiefly in that capacity exercised considerable influence over the course of musical events in England. The period 1835-85, so far as regards secular music in England, is marked, principally, by three movements. Taking them in the order in which they occurred, there was, first, the effort at formation of a native school -- and this at a time when the genius of Mendelssohn was the rising son of modern music. Soon afterwards may be observed the beginning of that music education of the people which was, gradually, to lead to what may be called the democratisation of good concerts." -- from the preface page V Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. His fertility, his precision and grace as a stylist, his wit and uncanny brilliance in choosing subject matter, his crack storytelling skills have made him into one of our best writers: a journalist whom L.E. Sissman ranked with Liebling and Mencken, who Geoffrey Wolff said "is bringing his work to levels that have no measurable limit," who has been called "a master craftsman" so many times that it is pointless to number them. Reading creases on the spine, age toning of the rear panel, and pencil note & signature on the inside of the rear cover. Otherwise no damage to describe. He escorted John le Carre around South East Asia as he researched The Honourable Schoolboy. He was wounded in Vietnam and awarded a Bronze Star for rescuing a Marine. He was with Sidney Schanberg and Dith Pran in Phnom Penh before the city descended into the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge. That Damned Democrat: John Norton, an Australian Populist, 1858-1916
Cannon, Michael (editor),
ISBN: 0522842151
Melbourne University Press, Carlton South Vic, Austria, 1980. First Edition
Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. First Edition. 500 g; VIII, 184 pages, last six pages blank, indexed, chapter notes, numerous articles reproduced along with line drawing illustrations. Coloured illustrated dust jacket. Original bookseller's sticker on front paste down. This impartial biography of a passionate man and his works and manages to separate fact from the fantasies which Norton enjoyed weaving around his origins, motives and activities. The result is a succinct, compelling story of an extraordinary character he used radical journalism and politics to achieve personal goals, doing much good and some harm along the way. A "Norton anthology" gives entertaining examples of the type of journalism which made Norton idolized by large sections of the working class but hated and feared by most conventional people. This is not the whole voice of radicalism in Australia's earlier years. But it is an important, neglected and greatly misunderstood part of a history. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. This is not the whole voice of radicalism in Australia's earlier years. But it is an important, neglected and greatly misunderstood part of a history. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Reflections; 150 Years of the Age
Foley, Steve -- Editor,
ISBN: 1864710861
Doubleday, New South Wales, 2004. First Edition
Hardcover Hardcover. Fine/slipcased. Illustrator: Photographic. First Edition. 2.48 kg; VIII, 372 pages, indexed. Introductory essay "the cabbage patch that grew 1854-2004: a history by Geoffrey Blainey. The book considers politics, war, the city, witness, life, fashion, music, crime, culture and sport (although in Victoria how the last two can be separated?). With original colour illustrated slipcase. "Geoffrey Blainey sets the scene. In 1854, Melbourne did not have buildings more than three storeys high. We had chopped most of the trees and the main objects on the skyline were deep-sea ships, their bare masts an exercise in geometry. Come October 17 of that year, Governor Sir Charles Hotham, looking very splendid, entered a new building in William Street. Then just before a rendering of the Hallelujah Chorus there was a formal presentation of a new newspaper, beautifully mounted and printed in gold. Price: Sixpence. It was the first edition of The Age. The august gentleman survived only a year. He caught a chill opening the Melbourne Gasworks and died, but how fascinated he would be to see this volume 150 years later. It is titled Reflections, edited by Steve Foley. Actually it is not a history of The Age as a newspaper. It is a history of Melbourne and Victoria as it unfolded, edition after edition through the years. No dull stuff here. It has the vibrancy, the immediacy that came from the witnesses, the reporters, the photographers, who were there at the moment. I can remember a chief of staff who used to say: "I only want reporters who have mud on their boots." There is much evidence of that. There are reprints of many famous front pages, but there is much more. There are more than 1000 illustrations and photographs in this book. There was a time when journalists liked to think themselves slightly superior to photographers. The truth is the other way round. Australian press photographers have few peers anywhere in the world. For example, there are pictures taken by the amazing Bruce Postle. I don't think I ever saw him take a picture on the straight and level. There is a remarkable shot where Postle was held by the ankles on top of the Manchester Unity building while he recorded 70,000 demonstrators against the Vietnam War in 1970. He has another picture of Tommy Woodcock, one-time trainer of Phar Lap. Woodcock, now old, is lying with racehorse Reckless. The picture tells everything. They are lookingat each other with total love. Neville Bowler's great picture would have to be in every collection. It is a reminder there was a time when Melbourne had a reputation for wet weather. This was the day in 1972 when Elizabeth Street was turned into a flooded fury. Bowler has his camera at ground level and the picture is so powerful you almost push the book away for fear of being drowned. Then one of the best pictures you will ever see is Simon O'Dwyer's recent shot of Omeo. We are in the hot summer when Omeo is surrounded by fire and it takes all kinds of faith not to believe any second the town will disappear in the furnace. It is the colour, the awful red glow, coupled with the clouds of black smoke that make the picture so great. There is a man in the foreground fleeing for his life. This is an ashes on boots picture. Reflections' themes - politics, war, city, witness, life, fashion, music, crime, culture and sport - come with essays by top Age writers such as Michael Gordon, Andrew Rule, Shaun Carney, Michael Shmith, Greg Baum and Jane Sullivan. There is also a 46-page introduction by Geoffrey Blainey. Blainey's style is simple and direct. He doesn't give us dry bones, but tells Melbourne's 150 years as a warm social history and he says much of the information came from the pages of The Age. Yes, in the very first edition, The Age reported that two of Melbourne's policemen had disappeared. Obvious where they had gone, they had absconded to the diggings, looking for gold. Ballarat, Bendigo, Beechworth, Castlemaine became grand places. Even in 1871 Ballarat was bigger than Perth, Hobart and possibly even Brisbane. In Bendigo they had managed to build an opera house that held more people than the present Sydney Opera House. Crowds used to gather outside the offices of The Age in Collins Street in times of crisis, whether it was a mine disaster or something more mundane such as a Test match. One of the worst days was May 11, 1915, when, on page eight, there was column after long column that listed the dead and wounded under the heading "Heroes of the Dardanelles". This is a good book, a credit to its editor and one that I, certainly, would be terrified to lend. " -- from the book review published in 2004 there is no damage to detail, apart from light rubbing of the slip case. Size: Folio ( 12"- 15" tall ). Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
