Cosmigraphics -- picturing space through time
Benson, Michael,
ISBN: 1419713876
Harry N. Abrams, New York, 2014. First Edition
Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. First Edition. Selecting artful and profound illustrations and maps, many hidden away in the world's great science libraries and virtually unknown today, he chronicles more than 1,000 years of humanity's ever-expanding understanding of the size and shape of space itself. He shows how the invention of the telescope inspired visions of unimaginably distant places and explains why today we turn to supercomputer simulations to reveal deeper truths about space-time. "Cosmigraphics" explores the visual side of our greatest imaginative achievement as a species: the unveiling of a vast universe that is largely invisible to our senses. Full number line. Inscription on the front end page "to Professor and Mrs Waterhouse with pleasant remembrances from Linda Arnot". Stanley Allen, Professor G. P. Thomson, and a letter to Dr Arnot from Professor L. B. Loeb. Also included, written in pencil, but not signed, is a letter to Faber and Faber dated 29 November 1938 -- Dear Sirs, I enclose the typescript of a small monograph of about 30,000 words entitled "time and the universe", and I should be glad to hear if you will undertake the publication of this. .... The text is illustrated with black-and-white and colour photography (the colour photography is computer enhanced), black-and-white maps and illustrations. Photographic paperback binding with white and yellow coloured titles to the front panel and apricots coloured titles to the back strip. "NASa's Mariner and Viking space probes produced tens of thousands of photographs of Mars, showing it to be barren, crater-ruin, wind-swept world. Many scientists initially declared it to have always been lifeless. But two NASA scientists became haunted by a number of NASA camera frames that appeared to show a face staring out into space. They devised a computer image-enhancement technique which showed that the phase had distinctive human features and expression, including eye pupils and a pharaoh -type headdress. This is hardly the product of natural erosion. It is the Sphinx Face of Mars." from three front end page. But, on further investigation and enhancement of photographs structures that appeared to be like the Egyptian pyramids were revealed along with apparently architecturally built structures was there a ancient civilisation on our nearest neighbour?
