MI6 Fifty Years of Special Operations
Dorril, Stephen
Fourth Estate UK 2000
Hardcover 1.5kgs & 907 Smiley-crisp pp. MI6 is crammed with information for the security service buff and the lay-person alike, and is by turn extraordinary, darkly comical and alarming, but never less than a remarkable insight into a service that operates in our name. To the person in the street, the British secret service conjures up images of the shaken, but never stirred suavity of James Bond. The reality of life inside MI6--the Security Service responsible for British operations outside of the United Kingdom--is a more dark narrative of intrigue and ineptitude, alleges Stephen Dorril, author of this comprehensive and weighty tome. Don't plan to put this on your light reading list, for MI6 is a huge and dense book: 800 pages of text, plus a list of acronyms that runs to six pages and over 60 pages of notes. Dorril begins by observing that "Researching secret agencies--and there are a few more secret than MI6--is obviously a difficult task"; in the light of this he's done an admirable job. The Mother of Mohammed
Neighbour, Sally
Melbourne University Press Australia 2009
Soft Cover A whisker under 500g to post, 358pp In The Mother of Mohammed, Four Corners journalist Sally Neighbour tells the extraordinary story of how a dope-smoking beach bunny from Mudgee, Robyn Hutchinson, became Rabiah-a member of the jihadist elite. Known among her peers as 'the mother of Mohammed', and as 'the Elizabeth Taylor of the jihad' in CIA circles, Rabiah lived for twenty years on the frontlines of the global holy war. With a reputation for tough investigative journalism, Sally Neighbour persuaded Rabiah to tell her story. She investigates how Rabiah became a trusted insider to the Jemaah Islamiyah, Taliban and al Qaeda leaderships, and married a leading figure in Osama bin Laden's inner sanctum. In The Mother of Mohammed Sally Neighbour discovers a world of converts and true believers. This unique and confronting account from inside the jihad helps us to understand the magnetism of the Islamist cause.   Very Good/None issued

The Bomber War the Allied Air Offensive Against Nazi Germany
Neillands, Robin
Overlook USA 2001 1st
Hardcover This copy ex-UK library but in really great shape apart from a cheap plastic over the dj. An authoritative study of the Allied bombing campaign against Nazi Germany draws on the recollections of British, American, Canadian, and other Allied pilots, as well as on those of German fliers and civilians, to explore the role and effectiveness of the campaign and the moral issues involved. review > This book is a description of the bombing offensive against Germany in WW2. The most fascinating aspect of this book is that it chronicles the problems encountered with long range bombing given the technology and resources that existed at the time. Everything had to be invented from scratch. Navigation, target acquisition, electronic measures and countermeasures, fighters and flack. The book also spends some time on the mostly after the war debate about whether the bombing achieved its goals and whether it was morally right. How the RAF and the AAF learned step by step how to conduct a systematic and effective strategic bombing campaign is the meat of this book and it is very well done. 448pp & approx 1kg packed for post, bw pix midships.  Very Good/Very Good

Gestapo Instrument of Tyranny
Crankshaw, Edward
Greenhill Books UK 1990
Hardcover 275pp, photo section amidships, less than 500g to post. Traces the history of the Gestapo from its beginnings in the 1930s to its final acts of mass murder in the last days of the war, detailing the organization's horrific crimes of torture and genocide which were revealed at Nuremberg. review >> This is a deep and prescient book. EC takes a more personal stance towards his subject than is the fashion nowadays. EC writes a study of the rise, fall and organization of the Gestapo. He gives enough detail to horrify but not so much as to get lost in a cloud of prurience. The meticulous creation of evil gives one a sense of numbed unreality. The Gestapo is so placid and accountant-like in its workaday routine. Banality of evil indeed. Faults? dj has 5mm closed tear.  Excellent/Very Good

Delizia! The Epic History of the Italians and Their Food
Dickie, John
Hodder & Stoughton UK 2007
Hardcover 800 grammi e 404 pagine (all in inglese), 3 photo sections - Everyone loves Italian food. But how did the Italians come to eat so well? The advertising industry tells us the answer lies in the vineyards and olive groves of Tuscany - among sun-weathered peasants, and mammas serving pasta under the pergola. Yet this nostalgic fantasy has little to do with the real history of Italian cuisine. For a thousand years, Italys cities have been magnets for everything that makes for great eating: ingredients, talent, money, and power. So Italian food is city food, and telling its story means telling the story of the Italians as a people of city dwellers. In Delizia! the author of the acclaimed Cosa Nostra takes a revelatory historical journey through the flavours of Italys cities. From the bustle of Medieval Milan, to the bombast of Fascist Rome; from the pleasure gardens of Renaissance Ferrara, to the putrid alleyways of nineteenth-century Naples. In rich slices of urban life, Delizia! shows how violence and intrigue, as well as taste and creativity, combined to make the worlds favourite cuisine. review >>> Well written and a great read!   Excellent/Very Good

The Best of Signal Hitler’s Wartime Picture Magazine
Mayer, S.L. (ed)
Magna Books UK 1987
Hardcover Signal was a magazine published by the German Wehrmacht from 1940 through 1945. Signal was a modern, glossy, illustrated photo journal and army propaganda tool, meant specifically for audiences in neutral, allied, and occupied countries. A German edition was distributed in Switzerland and to various other countries with a strong German military presence, but Signal was never distributed in Germany proper. The promoter of the magazine was the chief of the Wehrmacht propaganda office, Colonel Hasso von Wedel. Signal was published fortnightly (plus some special issues) in as many as 25 editions and 30 languages, and at its height had a circulation of 2,500,000 copies. It was available in the United States in English until December 1941. The magazine also included articles about economics, science, arts, and advertising for the most well-known German companies (BMW, Agfa, Audi, Siemens ...). The contents of the different editions could vary, sometimes avoiding subjects that could upset or worry the population of that country. The magazine kept its independence from the Propaganda Ministry, remaining under control of the army. Still, there is a political message, one of a unified Europe (under the so-called 'New Order') fighting together against the Bolshevism, this idea was symbolized by the different foreign units and volunteers fighting on the German side. dj a bit ruffled at top edge. 1.7 kg to post, unpaginated but approx 300pp packed with illustration.  Very Good/Very Good/Good

Scott’s Last Journey
King, Peter (ed)
Duckworth UK 1999
Hardcover A kilo to post & 192 snow white pp, foreword by Beryl Bainbridge. There is growing world wide interest in the epic attempts to reach the South Pole by Shackleton and Scott, the latter's ending in tragedy. At the time these men were uncritically accepted as Englishmen in the heroic mould, though in past decades their legendary exploits have been subjected to more severe examination. The book also includes over 150 photographs taken by the Antarctic photographer, Herbert Ponting. These are used with captions, together with side notes to the journals, to explain more clearly and comprehensively what happened on the fatal expedition. review >>> I believe this is the last word in putting Captain Scott's own story into print, accompanied as it is with Herbert Ponting's superb images.  Excellent/Excellent

The Taste of Britain Foreword By Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
Mason, Laura & Brown, Catherine
HarperPress UK 2006
Decorative Cloth 496 snowy-white pp, 1.6kg packed to post. Book was originally issued with a paper band around its tummy, ie no dj. This delightful compendium of Britain’s traditional regional foods combines fascinating local history about the origins of some of our most distinctive and curious foodstuffs with a celebration of the ways in which the most humble cut of meat can embody culinary traditions stretching back through the ages. Far from the bland and stodgy board usually associated with British cuisine, ‘The Taste of Britain’ reveals a culinary portrait of remarkable wealth and character – from Fat Rascals to Fidget Pie, Cornish pasties to Chelsea buns, and Bedfordshire Clangers to Bath Chaps. Entries have been carefully selected on the grounds that they have been produced in one place for more than three generations, and many for much longer: more than merely a history of food, this is a tribute to a Britain that predates the supermarket era and evokes traditions that date back hundreds of years. About the book's development - many EU countries commissioned works to look at their food heritage & when the British one was complete (after a dozen or so years) it languished until taken up by Prospect Books, a small firm specialising in food books , as Traditional Foods of Britain. When a Harper exec spotted a copy in his parent's shelves a re-energising update brought it to fruition, this is that book. A review>>> Fabulous present to get or to give ! and >> In range, warmth and enthusiasm, ‘The Taste of Britain’ is a book for absolutely everyone from the 'foodie' connoisseur interested in the origins of the Careless Gooseberry to the culinary neophyte.  Excellent/None issued

Italy’s Sorrow: A Year of War 1944-45
Holland, James
St Martin's Press USA 2008
Hardcover 606pp & just over a kilo. Faults? Some twit took it outside & put it face down on a wet table, hence the wonky dj & front board, book not affected but I've given it a low price. Today Italy is a land of beauty and prosperity but in 1944-45 it had become a place of nightmares, a land of violence, war, and destruction. James Holland's ground-breaking account expertly documents the German advance to the stalemate of the Gothic line and a segment of Italian history that has been largely neglected. James Holland's ground-breaking account expertly documents the German advance to the stalemate of the Gothic line and a segment of Italian history that has been largely neglected. The war in Italy was the most destructive campaign in the west as the Allies and Germans fought a long, bitter and highly attritional conflict up the mountainous leg of Italy during the last twelve months of the Second World War. For front-line troops, casualties rates at Cassino and then along the notorious Gothic Line were as high as they had been along the Western Front in the First World War. There were further similarities too: blasted landscapes, rain and mud. For the men who fought there, Italy really was the hardest campaign. The Second World War in the East
Willmott, HP
Cassell UK 1999

The Quest for C Mansfield Cumming and the Founding of the Secret Service
Judd, Alan
Harper UK 1999
Hardcover 1 kg, 501 crisp pp, photo section - A fascinating and unique history of the launch of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service through the unusual life of its founder, Mansfield Cumming. Sir Mansfield Cumming, the founder of the British Secret Service and the original ‘C’, has until now been a shadowy figure. For this authorised biography, the Secret Intelligence Service has released to Alan Judd, Cumming’s voluminous diaries, which have never been seen outside the Service, and will be put back into storage in perpetuity when Judd has used them. The result is likely to be the most sensational biography of the season, and the definitive account of how MI5 and MI6 the models for all subsequent secret services all over the world were set up. Cumming signed himself ‘C’, was referred to as such in Whitehall and always used green ink, traditions maintained to this day. His life not only makes riveting reading but casts fascinating light on the development of the Secret Service and its influence on the twentieth century.  Excellent/Excellent/very

One Christmas in Washington Churchill and Roosevelt Forge the Grand Alliance
Bercuson, David J. & Herwig, Holger H.
Phoenix UK 2006
Softcover 320 crisp pp, photo section, less than 500g for posting. Light cover wear (embossed title colour worn) contents >> Fighting fascism is hard. Fighting it while arguing who's in charge of the struggle only makes things harder. Multinational military coalitions have been around since the time of the Peloponnesian War, Canadian military historians Bercuson and Herwig write. But WWII imposed requirements of a novel sort on the coalition that formed between Britain and the U.S.; both Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt knew that "Allied victory would demand that their two nations fight virtually as one," and that forging this unity both on the battlefield and in the production of war materiel was essential. Over a ten-day period around Christmas 1941, the two met in Washington to lay the foundations for what Churchill would dub "the grand alliance."   Very Good/None issued

It remains a day embedded in the memory of millions of people around the world over 800 million people were watching at home on television. Of all the images from the day, the most unforgettable is Diana's arrival at St. Paul's Cathedral in a glass carriage and the public's first glimpse of the best kept secret of the day, the royal wedding dress: layers of silk, antique lace, pearls, sequins, and a 25-foot train, which had been hidden in a vault in London, concealed from the public eye. It was a true Cinderella dress, one the public is joyfully remembering today as they anxiously wait to see if the wedding grown of England's future princess, Kate Middletown who is already known for dressing like Diana at royal events, can surpass it. The Roots of Counter-Insurgency
Beckett, Ian FW
Blandford Press UK 1988
Hardcover 700g for post, 160 crisp pp. Looks at the history of modern guerrila warfare and examines the experience of British, French, German, Soviet, and American armies. All that is written about the activities of the partisan, the rebel, the guerrilla seems to emphasize the inhabitant over the invader. This imported collection of six essays from instructors in military science at Britain's Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst examines the other side, using for example literally hundreds of campaigns to show that basic lessons in putting down revolts by subject people must be learned over and over by governments and their military branches. Six countries' attempts at suppression are examined with academic acuity and thoroughness, but the examples dissected are best aimed at those with specialized knowledge. A scholarly treatment, but very accessible. review >>> This overview is extremely well done; a typical example of the generally excellent work of Professor Beckett.  Very Good/Good

Ploughing Sand: British Rule in Palestine, 1917-1948
Shephard, Naomi
John Murray UK 1999
Hardcover This book recreates British rule in Palestine from the winter of 1917-when battle scared troops in flimsy desert gear clambered through mountain chill and mists to Jerusalem-to the spring of 1948 and the last High Commissioner's apologetic departure. Between these dates, the Jewish minority turned political weakness into strength, and the Palestine Arabs headed for disaster. How this happened under British administration is the subject of this richly documented account, based on public and private papers, memoirs, and interviews-many never previously published. This study is the first to reconstruct in detail the workings of the troubled Mandate administration, and the influence of its chief personalities. At the end, with the last laws passed against gambling, the land records preserved, and military equipment consigned to the sea, a leading official complained bitterly that all constructive efforts in Palestine had been like "ploughing sand". review >>> It is packed with many interesting and important details that make the book emminently readable and lay bare the roots of the enduring Arab-Israeli confrontation. 750g packed for post, 290 crisp pp, photo section amidships.  Fine/Excellent

Lancaster The Biography
Iveson, Squadron Leader Tony & Milton, Brian
Andre Deutsch UK 2009
Hardcover Tony Iveson was among those Lanc pilots whose aircraft crossed the North Sea to sink the battleship "Tirpitz." The Lancaster, though it did not enter operational service with the RAF until 1942, long after the official Battle of Britain was over, has more than earned its place in the Battle of Britain iconography. The Lancaster has carved its place in history in its own unique way. During the Spitfire's lifetime, more than 20,000 were built while the Lancaster's total is less than half of that. Yet the Lancaster had a crew of seven, with at least as many again in each Lanc's ground crew. More personnel, therefore, had a close association with the Lanc than with the world's most famous fighter plane. Tony Iveson has created a riveting biography of the aircraft, focusing not just on its operational history, but on the the crews who flew and maintained Lancs, even talking to German fighter pilots who flew against them. The stories in Lancaster run from the time of its initial design right through the war to when variants such as the Lancastrian entered civilian service.  Hardcover No matter how many pairs you have, no matter how closely you follow the trends, you’re bound to discover something new in this savvy and irreverent study of contemporary women’s shoes. Not limited to designers and trends, the book also explores the shoe’s relationship to sex and gender roles. Are high heels a symbol of subordination or empowerment? What is the fascination that shoes hold for fetishists? Nothing is left unsaid here, with candid commentary ranging from Rupaul to the Wall Street Journal. Written with wit and style, and sumptuously illustrated with 200 color photos, Shoes: A Lexicon of Style is a book for the well-shod of every persuasion. review >>> It was well educated and not just a current list of shoe trends. France Under the Directory
Lyons, Martyn
Cambridge University Press  1975
Paperback Robespierre fell & Bonaparte ascended the "throne". This book demonstrates that the interval between these two momentous events was also of crucial importance. Using the findings of recent research, it presents a balanced appraisal of the thermidorean and directorial regimes to the English student. For Jacobin sympathizers thermidor and the Directory represented the betrayal of the revolutionary idea; for Bonapartist propagandists it represented chaos and corruption, and the darker the Directory could be painted, the more Bonaparte's reputation would be flattered. Dr Lyons attempts to dispose of these myths. He stresses the Directory's successes as well as its failures, and emphasizes elements of continuity which link it both with the Jacobin regime and with the Consulate. The regime inherited a heavy burden of war, inflation and food shortages, yet it remained revolutionary in its Republicanism, its anticlericalism, and its desire to carry the fruits of the Revolution to the rest of Europe. At the same time it laid the foundations of financial stability and administrative efficiency on which Bonaparte was to build. 259pp internally great shape, cover a bit worn.  Very Good/None issued

Publication about 1985 review >>> There aren't many fencing reference books out there in the marketplace today, but this is a good one. Lots of interesting facts about the sport of fencing, although the book's focus is dominated by a British and European bias to the exclusion of much of the rest of the planet (to be expected, perhaps, since the author, E. D. Morton, is British). Still, there is much to learn from MARTINI A-Z OF FENCING. As a writer and fencing master, I recommend it .  Excellent/Very Good

The Shield of Achilles: War, Peace and the Course of History
Bobbitt, Philip
Allen Lane UK 2002 1st
Hardcover approx 1.5kg packed for post, 922 clean white well bound pp, minor wear to corners & leading edge of dj, This ambitious book sets out to reinterpret the history of the twentieth century as a long war in which conditions of outright military confrontation or of frantic "cold" competition lasted from the outbreak of the first world war until the collapseof the Soviet Union. He goes on to argue that this long experience of war has brought about a fundamental change in the constitutional basis of sates, and explores this idea through the notion of the "market state". By clarifying the relationship between constitutional settlements and military power, and by drawing on his firsthand experience in the heart of superpower planning, Bobbitt reveals a startling new way of understanding the past - and an awesome glimpse of the future. review >>> Breathtaking scope handled with confidence and clarity. Ambitious, erudite, persuasive. A tour de force historical narrative of state hegemonics. But with an agenda. and >>> That Bobbitt writes elegantly and synthesizes everything from poetry to policy to warfare to theory so beautifully makes the experience all the more rewarding and compelling.   Excellent/Good

One of my all time favourite books. and >>> An excellent biography of the young Prince Henry, and then his early reign as Henry VIII. Castles in the Air The Story of the B-17 Flying Fortress Crews of the US 8th Air Force
Bowman, Martin
Patrick Stephens, UK 1985
Softcover Blurb, background, review follow - At first glance I thought this was to be "another war book" but it's turned out to be an amazing achievement to collate so much tactical & personal detail into this modest seeming volume - I'd rate it 10 out of 10 for an "in their shoes" experience. BACKGROUND > After extensive B-17 raids into Germany, Churchill said, "Hitler built 'Fortress Europe' but he forgot to put a roof on it!" Established on 22 February 1944 as a redesignation of VIII Bomber Command at High Wycombe Airdrome, England, 8 AF was a United States Army Air Forces combat air force in the European Theater of World War II, engaging in operations primarily in the Northern Europe AOR, carrying out strategic bombing of enemy targets in France, the Low countries and Germany and engaging in air to air fighter combat against enemy aircraft until the German Capitulation in May 1945. It was the largest of the deployed combat Army Air Forces in numbers of personnel, aircraft and equipment. Very well read (worn covers) & no wonder!! Lest We Forget  Good-fair/Fair

LETTERS OF ALICE B. TOKLAS, STAYING ON ALONE
Burns Edward (ed)
Liveright USA 1973 1st
Hardcover This book from a US county library but may have been a reference work rather than a lending copy, reference card at rear, id on spine, plastic wrap, VGood condition. Clean pages. Clean, unclipped jacket. 426 well bound pages with bw photos throughout. Edited by Edward Burns, intro by Gilbert Harrison. review - Gertrude Stein died in 1946, 20 years before Alice B. Toklas met her own end - - the personal letters in this nicely illustrated volume (over 400 pages) are chiefly the ones that Alice wrote to numerous people of note subsequent to Stein's death. The earlier-period Toklas letters are not included here. Toklas was a remarkable lady and one would be hard-pressed to unearth a friend who was more devoted to her companion. Anyone who said something negative about Stein was immediately relegated to Toklas' lengthy S***-list. Much of the correspondence here (maybe 40%) was sent to her mentor of sorts, Carl Van Vechten and his lovely wife Fania. Other letters went to people like Sir Francis Rose, Brion Gysin, and so on, often yielding unique insights on Stein's and Toklas' numerous acquaintances and friends such as Picasso, Juan Gris, Virgil Thomson, and many other people of historical significance. Documentation of the escalating feud between Toklas and the Stein family subsequent to Gertrude's death also provides great trivial fodder for the reader's consumption. For fans of the two ladies, however, this book is a treasure trove of "hot gossip" and insight on Toklas' compelling personality.  Very Good/Very Good

Al Smith A Hero of the Cities
Josephson, Matthew and Hannah
Thames & Hudson London 1969
Hardcover 800g + 505 clean white tightly bound pp, photos mid section, bio info (wiki) Alfred Emanuel Smith. (December 30, 1873 – October 4, 1944), known in private and public life as Al Smith, was an American statesman who was elected the 42nd Governor of New York three times, and was the Democratic U.S. presidential candidate in 1928. He was the foremost urban leader of the efficiency-oriented Progressive Movement, and was noted for achieving a wide range of reforms as governor in the 1920s. He was also linked to the notorious Tammany Hall machine that controlled Manhattan politics; he was a strong opponent of prohibition. Smith was the first Catholic to run for President. As a committed "wet" (anti-Prohibition candidate), he attracted millions of voters of all backgrounds, particularly those concerned about the corruption and lawlessness brought about by the Eighteenth Amendment.[1] However he was unpopular among certain segments, including Southern Baptists and German Lutherans, who believed the Catholic Church and the Pope would dictate his policies. Most importantly, this was a time of national prosperity under a Republican Presidency, and Smith lost in a landslide to Republican Herbert Hoover. Smith attempted the 1932 nomination, but was defeated by his former ally Franklin D. Roosevelt. Smith entered business in New York City, and became an increasingly vocal opponent of Roosevelt's New Deal.  Excellent/Very Good

Joseph Chamberlain: Radicalism and empire, 1868-1914
Fraser, Peter
Cassell London 1966
Hardcover 600g & 349 clean white tightly bound pp, A few famously attributed quotes > You cannot teach old dogs new tricks. > In politics, there is no use looking beyond the next fortnight. > The day of small nations has long passed away. The day of Empires has come. Joseph Chamberlain (8 July 1836 – 2 July 1914) was an influential British politician and statesman. Unlike most major politicians of the time, he was a self-made businessman and had not attended Oxford or Cambridge University. Despite never becoming Prime Minister, he is regarded as one of the most important British politicians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as a renowned orator and an interesting character who split both main parties. Winston Churchill later wrote of him that he was the man "who made the weather". Chamberlain was the father – by different marriages – of Sir Austen Chamberlain and Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. (wiki info)  Excellent/Very Good

The Men of Company K The Autobiography of a World War 2 Rifle Company
Leinbaugh, Harold and Campbell, John
William Morrow & Company USA 1985 1st
Hardcover Offers a moving dramatic portrait of the soldiers and officers of the K Company and their experiences on the Siegfried Line, at the Battle of the Bulge. google reviewer - This book is a history of a WWII rifle company written by members of the company. This book predates many of the more recent WWII books such as the ones Stephen E. Ambrose wrote (citizen soldier, band of brothers, etc.) This accounting is less sanitized and more forward having been written by those who were in the s**t. Reading helped better understand what the soldiers faced and how they thought about what they did when they did it and what they felt afterwards. If you liked Citizen Soldier and are interested in more first hand accounts and gritty detail this book could be for you.   Excellent/Very Good

The Eighteen Christian Centuries
White, Rev James
William Blackwood & Sons Ltd. UK 1873
Hardcover Grammar School inscription dated 1891 but bizarrely no name included. 511pp of tightly packed commentary on the evolution & revolution of christianity - sample - In the history of human progress centuries are the milestones by which we measure the distance traversed. In the East even this method fails us, so stereotyped and lifeless are the forms of social life, so slight the change. But with the restless activity of the Aryan tribes in the West each century has grown more and more unlike the preceding. Grecian culture and Roman arms had broken down the narrowness of national and tribal exclusiveness when the Christian era opens. Roman administration had united vast and distant provinces into an Empire. One after the other they had succumbed to the invader. Marbled endpapers, gilt titling & school name gilt stamped, probable leather, lightish patches of foxing scattered, board fore edges gilt. Binding excellent.
