Blood Brother: 33 Reasons My Brother Scott Peterson Is Guilty
Bird, Anne
ISBN: 0060838574
Regan Books 2005  2005
8vo hardcover 214pp colour & b/w illus. very good, owner's name on fep. / very good d/w. What happens if, after being given up for adoption in childhood, you reestablish contact with your biological family -- only to discover that your newfound brother is a killer? Anne Bird, the sister of Scott Peterson, knows firsthand. Soon after her birth in 1965, Anne was given up for adoption by her mother, Jackie Latham. Welcomed into the well-adjusted Grady family, she lived a happy life. Then, in the late 1990s, she came back into contact with her mother, now Jackie Peterson, and her family -- including Jackie's son Scott Peterson and his wife, Laci. Anne was welcomed into the family, and over the next several years she grew close to Scott and especially Laci. Together they shared holidays, family reunions, and even a trip to Disneyland. Anne and Laci became pregnant at roughly the same time, and the two became confidantes. nnThen, on Christmas Eve 2002, Laci Peterson went missing -- and the happy façade of the Peterson family slowly began to crumble. Anne rushed to the family's aid, helping in the search for Laci, even allowing Scott to stay in her home while police tried to find his wife. Yet Scott's behavior grew increasingly bizarre during the search, and Anne grew suspicious that her brother knew more than he was telling. Finally she began keeping a list of his disturbing behavior. And by the time Laci's body -- and that of her unborn son, Conner -- were found, Anne was becoming convinced: Her brother Scott Peterson had murdered his wife and unborn child in cold blood. Filled with news-making revelations and intimate glimpses of Scott and Laci, the Peterson family, and the investigation that followed the murder, Blood Brother is a provocative account of how long-dormant family ties dragged one woman into one of the most notorious crimes of our time.

John Marsden I Am What I Am: My Life and Curious Times
Marsden, John ( The Lawyer not the Author)
ISBN: 0670040525
Penguin Books January 2004  2004
8vo softcover 388pp Vedry good. Long active in the areas of civil liberties, gay law reform and police integrity, John Marsden was a well-connected Sydney solicitor with friends in high places when he was very publicly brought down by allegations of paedophilia made against him in state parliament and subsequently aired on Today Tonight and Witness. What followed turned into the longest, the most expensive, and perhaps the most unsavoury defamation trial Australia has ever seen: a nine-year nightmare that took John Marsden to the brink and beyond; a 'David and Goliath' battle that pitted a media empire against an individual. I Am What I Am tells the real story behind the salacious headlines - the story of how John Marsden came to find himself in the eye of the storm and how he lived through so many years of trials and uncertainty. Scarce.

Blackened Tanner - The Denis Tanner Story
Irwin, Ron
ISBN: 9781743003220
The Five Mile Press 2012  2012
Trade paperback. 289pp. Very good. This is the story of Denis Tanner, a Victorian detective who hit the headlines in 1996 when a newspaper accused him of murdering two women - his sister-in-law Jennifer, whose death in 1984 was treated as suicide, and Adele Bailey, a transsexual prostitute who disappeared in 1978. In 1998 a coroner found that Denis Tanner had shot Jennifer, but he was never charged. As a result, he has been denied a forum in which to defend himself and clear his name. In this book, former detective Ron Irwin presents a compelling case for Denis Tanner's innocence and documents a deeply disturbing miscarriage of justice.

In 1992, Pitera was sentenced to life in prison for murdering six people and supporting a massive drug-dealing operation. Yet this covered only a fraction of the crimes he committed. Gentle Satan - My Father Abe Saffron
Saffron, Alan
Penguin 2008  2008
8vo. Trade paperback. 308pp. Near fine. Illustrated with family photo's. Growing up the son of Australia's kingpin of vice, Alan Saffron had little chance of a normal life. In the landmark nightspots of Kings Cross, his father pioneered the lucrative underworld business of girls, grog and gambling - and had Alan count the money after school. But the real trouble was at home. Abe Saffron ruled his family with the same ruthless authority with which he ruled the Cross. A tireless womaniser, he split his week between his wife and son and a series of mistresses, even starting a second family with one of them. His control over those around him continued until his death in late 2006 and beyond, through his surprising will. In Gentle Satan, Alan charts his father's rise to power and four-decade reign, made possible by corruption at the highest echelons of police and politics. He also offers the truth behind the infamous tragedies of Juanita Nielsen's murder and the Luna Park fire.

Granny Made Me an Anarchist - General Franco, The Angry Brigade and Me
Christie, Stuart
ISBN: 0743259181
Simon & Schuster, London, 2004  2004
Trade paperback. 423pp. Very good. In 1964, Christie was arrested in Spain and charged with attempting to assassinate General Franco. He was 18, far from his home in Glasgow, and could speak no Spanish. The worst part was that the charge was true. Christie was convicted, and became Britain's most famous anarchist. In 1972 he was arrested again, this time in Britain, suspected of being a member of The Angry Brigade. The Angry Brigade was an anarchist group that had - intending that no-one should be injured - blown up several London embassies and the houses of prominent British officials. Their trial became a sensational confrontation between the state and those who tried to overthrow it. Christie was not a member, although he knew those who were and stood trial alongside them. He was acquitted; all the others were sent to gaol. These events bookend an era when a sizeable proportion of the British population thought that the government might be overthrown by the will of the people, in favour of a better society, if only the right spark could be lit. It wasn't. People have never thought that way again.

The Candy Machine: How Cocaine Took Over the World
Feiling, Tom.
ISBN: 0141034467
Penguin  0
8vo softcover 368pp Very good copy. Cocaine is big business and getting bigger. Governments spend millions on an unwinnable war against it, yet it's now the drug of choice in the West. How did the cocaine economy get so huge? Who keeps it running behind the scenes? In The Candy Machine Tom Feiling travels the trade routes from Colombia via Miami, Kingston and Tijuana to London and New York. He meets Medillin hitmen, US kingpins, Brazilian traffickers, and talks to soldiers and narcotics officers who fight the gangs and cartels. He traces cocaine's progress from legal 'pick-me-up' to luxury product to global commodity, looks at legalization programmes in countries such as Switzerland, and shows how America's anti-drugs crusade is actually increasing demand.Cutting through the myths about the white market, this is the story of cocaine as it's never been told before.

The Number - One man’s Search for identity in the Cape underworld and Prison gangs.
Steinberg, J.
Jonathan Ball Publishers September 5, 2005  2005
4to softcover 440pp good, cover creased. In front of him lay the prospect of a law-abiding future, and life in a household of ten adults and eight children, none of whom earned a living. Author Jonny Steinberg met Wentzel in prison in 2002. By the time of Wentzel's release, he and Steinberg had spent more than 50 hours discussing his life experiences. The number is an account of their conversations and of Steinberg's journeys to the places and people of Wentzel's past. He had lived a bewilderingly schizophrenic life, wandering to and fro between three worlds: the arcane universe of prison gangs, steeped in a mythology of banditry and retribution, where he was known as JR; the margins of South Africa's criminal economy, where he lived by a string of stolen names and learnt the arts of commercial fraud; and his scattered family, which eked out a living in the coloured ghettos of the Cape Flats. The number visits each of those worlds in turn. It is a tale of modern South Africa's historic events seen through the eyes of the country's most marginal citizens. Surprisingly, perhaps, it is neither a story of passivity nor despair, but of beguiling ingenuity and cool cynicism. Most of all, the title is an account of memory and id

Pirates of the 21st Century: How Modern-Day Buccaneers are Terrorising the World’s Oceans
Cawthorne, Nigel
ISBN: 1844548074
John Blake April 1, 2010  2010
8vo softcover 278pp near fine. In November 2008, Somali pirates seized the Sirius Star, a supertanker carrying $100 million worth of oil, and demanded a $25 million ransom for its return. This story, following hot on the heels of the capture of the Ukrainian vessel MV Faina, brought piracy back to the front pages-but these were by no means isolated incidents. Piracy has once again become the scourage of the high seas. Throughout 2008, close to 90 ships were seized in the Gulf of Aden alone and, in many cases, the pirates were paid million-dollar ransoms to release them. Who are the men behind this modern-day phenomenon? What started as a patrol to combat commerical plundering of their fish stocks has now grown into a highly organized and lucrative business. In a war-torn country, the pirates have brought hope and entire villages depend on the wealth that they bring in-they have even been likened to Robin Hood. But whatever their motives, these modern-day buccaneers should not be romanticized-their attacks are becoming more violent and they are increasingly in possession of automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades.

The Second Father: An Insider’s Story of Cops, Crime and Corruption
Cacciola, Domenico
ISBN: 0702237124
University of Queensland Press April 1, 2010  2010
8vo softcover 220pp very good. From Brisbane's sleazy Sin Triangle to drug busts in the wild Far North, this exposé from a former Queensland undercover cop reveals an underworld of crime and police corruption. Compelled into fighting for justice and honor after having grown up amongst racism and discrimination, Domenico ‘Mick' Cacciola joined the force in the 1960s as a "sleeper" whose job was to infiltrate illegal gambling dens. Throughout his tenure, the book reveals, he witnessed the ugly face of entrenched corruption, spied on suspected Communists, and used his muscle to break up illegal street marches. Breaking his 35-year silence, Cacciola exposes the truth behind Australia's most notorious era of crime and corruption in this remarkable memoir.

Written in Blood
Wilson, Colin
ISBN: 1853360554
Equation 1989  1989
8vo hardcover 512pp index, b/w illus. good+, page edges browned / very good d/w. In 44 B.C. a Roman doctor named Antistius performed the first autopsy recorded in history-on the corpse of murder victim Julius Caesar. However, not until the nineteenth century did the systematic application of scientific knowledge to crime detection seriously begin, so that the tiniest scrap of evidence might yield astonishing results-like the single horsehair that betrayed the sex murderer in New York's 1936 Nancy Titterton case. In this massive and compelling history of forensic detection, the internationally recognized criminologist Colin Wilson charts the progress of criminalistics from the first attempts at detecting arsenic to the development of an impressive array of such modern techniques as ballistic analysis, blood typing, voice printing, textile analysis, psychological profiling, and genetic fingerprinting. Wilson also explores the alarmingly modern phenomenon of serial sex crime with a discussion of notorious cases that includes Jack the Ripper, Lucie Berlin, Mary Phagan, the Black Dahlia, Charles Manson, and Peter Sutcliffe, the so-called Yorkshire Ripper. Wilson shows how the continual sophistication of forensic detection and the introduction of computerized information retrieval has increasingly stacked the odds against the sex killer. The Tait Case
Burns, Creighton
Melbourne University Press 1962  1962
8vo. Stiff paper cover. 181pp. Robert Peter Tait was guilty of a horrible murder. Questions were raised over his punishment of hanging. Is there any place for the death penalty in an enlightened society? Do legal concepts of insanity lag dangerously behind scientific knowledge of the mind? What light does the case throw upon the relationship between executive and judiciary? The author examines with understanding but objectivity the many deeply felt issues of conscience which troubled all who thought about the Tait case.

Fraudbusters: The Inside Story of the Serious Fraud Office
Killick, Mark
ISBN: 0575065451
Gollancz 1998  1998
8vo hardcover 252pp index, b/w illus. very good / very good d/w. The Serious Fraud Office is Britain's most controversial crime-fighting organization, generating admiration and contempt in almost equal measure. It has known triumph with the Guinness convictions, disaster with the acquittal of the Maxwell brothers, and ridicule with Roger Levitt's derisory sentence of community service. In addition, it dealt with Peter Clowes, George Walker, and Asil Nadir. This book provides the background story of the Serious Fraud Office's turbulent history. Including many interviews with Britain's top fraud investigators as well as some of the SFO's most famous targets, it is published to coincide with a six-part television series.

ABC Books January 1, 2007  2007
8vo softcover 256pp near fine. ndy Bell is a police constable with a problem. It's not that his chief hates his guts. It's not that he's an undercover cop living in a brothel and sleeping with the enemy in hopes of cracking a dope ring. It's not even that most of her friends are violent criminals who would kill him slowly if they found out who he was. No - Andy Bell's problem is that he is enjoying it too much. And he doesn't see why it has to end.

After school he tried his hand at several jobs including warehouse clerk and vacuum cleaner salesman. At the age of seventeen he wrote his first novel. By the time he was twenty-one, he had written nine novels, all of them unpublished. His next book, Seven Times Seven, was the first to find a publisher. Secret Servant: My Life With the KGB and the Soviet Elite
Dzhirkvelov, Ilya
Collins UK 1987
Hardcover 398pp & approx 900g to post - review/content >>> The author served in the NKVD/KGB in various capacities for 30 years before heading to the West. Unlike many defectors who left for ideological reasons, Dzirkvelov left because he felt he had been given a raw deal at his last posting in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1980 (while serving as a correspondent for the Soviet News Agency, TASS). Dzirkvelov's accounts are all the more interesting because he is unrepentant about his work and pro-Stalinist views. His discussions of relations between Russians and other Soviet nationalities (Dzirkvelov being a Georgian) are also of interest. He comes off as terribly deluded from reality by his own ideological beliefs.  Very Good/Very Good

Spies
Frayn, Michael
Faber & Faber  2002
Paperback 213pp & less than 500g to post - The sudden trace of a disturbing, forgotten aroma compels Stephen Wheatley to return to the site of a dimly remembered but troubling childhood summer in wartime London. As he pieces together his scattered memories, we are brought back to a quiet, suburban street where two boys--Keith and his sidekick, Stephen--are engaged in their own version of the war effort: spying on the neighbors, recording their movements, and ferreting out their secrets. But when Keith utters six shocking words, the boy’s game of espionage takes a sinister and unintended turn, transforming a wife’s simple errands and the ordinary rituals of family life into the elements of adult catastrophe. Childhood and innocence, secrecy, lies and repressed violence are all gently laid bare as once again Michael Frayn powerfully demonstrates that what appears to be happening in front of our eyes often turns out to be something we cannot see at all.  Very Good/None issued

The Complaints
Rankin, Ian
Orion Books Ltd.  2010
Paperback 452pp + reading group notes, less than 500g to post. Fox, the main character, is part of the unpopular Complaints & Conduct department of the police force (better known as ‘The Complaints’) -- and the reason for that unpopularity is clear to see: this is the department designed to root out corruption in the force and investigate suspect officers. The current target for Fox is policeman Glenn Heaton of the CID, who has often sailed close to the edge; now there appears to be material for a case against him. But at the same time, another cop, Jamie Breck, is suspected of being part of a ring indulging in child abuse. Fox is in for some jawdropping surprises regarding his colleague, and the shifting relationship between the two men is at the core of this finely honed narrative (along with Fox's treatment of his ailing father -- something else which differentiates this book from its predecessors).  Very Good/None issued

Venona The Greatest Secret of the Cold War
West, Nigel
Harper Collins  1999
Hardcover Over 500g, ex-Plymouth lib with plastic over the dj, 384 pp in great order. The hitherto untold story of the peacetime equivalent of ULTRA, an extraordinary cryptographic effort conducted in conditions of unprecedented secrecy over three decades which gave Western counter-intelligence experts a fascinating glimpse into how Soviet Russia recruited and ran hundreds of moles across the globe. Based on the only set of decrypts held in Britain outside Whitehall, supplemented by interviews with most of the principal players in the venona drama. The US National Security Agency and its British counterpart in Cheltenham, GCHQ, spent 37 years analysing cipher traffic to and from Moscow. Venona provided the FBI and CIA with compelling evidence against the Rosenbergs, Hiss, Fuchs, Donald Maclean and many others, but (to protect the source) venona could not be mentioned in any trial. Nigel West identifies for the first time the real names of several important Soviet British spies (including the famous scientist J.B.S. Haldane and the Hon. Ivor Montagu).  Excellent/Very Good/Excellent/very

For decades, they made a game of engaging in petty crime-bad deals, insurance fraud, robbing wallets. But after years of dabbling in theft, they came up with a way of making their pocketbooks even fatter. They found a way to make murder pay. It was a plan out of Arsenic and Old Lace: Befriend a homeless man, place life insurance policies in his name-and then have him killed. Their scheme worked once ... but then police started to notice a pattern. Helen and Olga were discovered, and in front of a court of law, their coldhearted pact to kill and cash in would finally be exposed. – From the Back Cover there is a small tear with associated creasing on the right-hand side of the front cover; there is no other damage to describe.
