Brecht: Collected Plays: Five: Life of Galileo; Mother Courage and Her Children
Bertolt Brecht,
ISBN: 9780413699701
Methuen, Great Britain, 2006.
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. . Edited and Introduced by John Willett and Ralph Manheim. Published by Methuen Drama, the collected dramatic works of Bertolt Brecht are presented in the most comprehensive and authoritative editions of Brecht's plays in the English language. The fifth volume in the Brecht Collected Plays series brings together two of Brecht's best-known and most frequently performed and studied plays: Life of Galileo and Mother Courage and Her Children. Galileo, which examines the conflict between free inquiry and official ideology, contains one of Brecht's most human and complex central characters. Temporarily silenced by the Inquisition's threat of torture, and forced to abjure his theories publicly, Galileo continues to work in private, eventually smuggling his work out of the country. As an examination of the problems that face not only the scientist but also the whole spirit of free inquiry when brought into conflict with the requirements of government or official ideology, Life of Galileo has few equals. Mother Courage is usually seen as Brecht's greatest work. Remaining a powerful indictment of war and social injustice, it is an epic drama set in the seventeenth century during the Thirty Years' War. The plot follows the resilient Mother Courage who survives by running a commissary business that profits from all sides. As the war claims all of her children in turn, the play poignantly demonstrates that no one can profit from the war without being subject to its terrible cost also. The translations are ideal for both study and performance. The volume is accompanied by a full introduction and notes by the series editor John Willett and includes Brecht's own notes and relevant texts as well as all the important textual variants 389 pages. The Threepenny Opera [Methuen Student Editions]
Bertolt Brecht [Translated by Ralph Manhei and John Willett],
ISBN: 9780413774521
Methuen, Great Britain, 2005.
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. . This Student Edition of Brecht's satire on the capitalist society of the Weimar Republic features an extensive introduction and commentary that includes a plot summary, discussion of the context, themes, characters, style and language as well as questions for further study and notes on words and phrases in the text. It is the perfect edition for students of theatre and literature.Based on John Gay's eighteenth century Beggar's Opera, The Threepenny Opera, first staged in 1928 at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin, is a vicious satire on the bourgeois capitalist society of the Weimar Republic, but set in a mock-Victorian Soho. It focuses on the feud between Macheaf - an amoral criminal - and his father in law, a racketeer who controls and exploits London's beggars and is intent on having Macheaf hanged. Despite the resistance by Macheaf's friend the Chief of Police, Macheaf is eventually condemned to hang, until in a comic reversal the queen pardons him and grants him a title and land. With Kurt Weill's unforgettable music - one of the earliest and most successful attempts to introduce jazz to the theatre - it became a popular hit throughout the western world. The text is presented in the trusted translation by Ralph Manheim and John Willett. 131 pages. Cover has a few creases. Cover edges rubbed. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. The Tempest [The New Cambridge Shakespeare]
David Lindley [Editor],
ISBN: 052129374X
Cambridge Univ. Press, Great Britain, 2002.
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. . The Tempest is one of the most suggestive, yet most elusive of all Shakespeare's plays, and has provoked a wide range of critical interpretation. It is a magical romance, yet deeply and problematically embedded in seventeenth-century debates about authority and power. David Lindley's Introduction and commentary focus upon contemporary texts, attending to the implications of Prospero's magic, his political and paternal ambitions, and the controversial issue of his 'colonialist' control of Caliban. The Tempest was also Shakespeare's response to the new opportunities offered by the Blackfriars theatre, and careful attention is given to the play's dramatic form, stage-craft, and use of music and spectacle, to demonstrate its uniquely experimental nature. 264 pages. Alcestis And Other Plays - Hippolytus; Iphigenia In Tauris and Alcestis
Euripides,
Penguin Books, Great Britain, 1953.
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. . The provocative story centers on the narrator's vivid recollection of a boyhood scene in which a black cat is provoked to pounce on his friend Mahlke's "mouse"--his prominent Adam's apple. This incident sets off a wild series of utterly Grassian events that ultimately leads to Mahlke's becoming a national hero. Because of Grass's singular storytelling virtuosity, "Cat and Mouse" is marvelously entertaining, powerful, and full of funny episodes. 165 pages. Age tanning to pages. Quantity Available: 1. A Sleep of Prisoners
Christopher Fry,
Geoffrey Cumberlege / Oxford University Press, Great Britain, 1951. Third Impression
Hardcover Hardcover. Good/Good. Third Impression. In A Sleep of Prisoners Mr. Fry investigates dramatically the problems of four prisoners of war. Locked up in a church in enemy territory, the men find that both personal and general conflicts become more explosive in confinement. One soldier loses his temper and half strangles his friend. In succeeding dreams each prisoner demonstrates his inner response to the events, extending himself, his companions and the problems they face on to a spiritual plane. The immediate surroundings suggest Biblical protagonists to the dreamers, and the attempted murder is seen successively in the stories of Cain and Abel, David and Absalom, and Abraham and Isaac. The general situation is seen by the fourth dreamer reflected in the story of Shadrac, Meshac, and Abednego. Pages slightly browned and some foxing to inside covers and end papers. Small tear to top front of dust jacket near spine. 51 pages. Foxing to endpapers and page edges. Dust Jacket price-clipped. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. The Emperor Jones [Appleton Modern Plays] With a Study Guide for the Screen Version of the Play by William Lewin and Max. J. Herzberg
Eugene O’Neill,
Appleton-Century-Croft, New York, USA, 1949. Student's Edition
Softcover Softcover. Good/. Student's Edition. Brutus Jones, a former Pullman car porter wanted in the United States on two murder charges, has established himself as the self-proclaimed ruler of a West Indian island. Warned that his subjects are about to rebel, he flees to the jungle sick with fright where he is plagued by ghosts of the men he has murdered and haunted by visions of injustices done to his race. Powerful scenes, punctuated by beating tom-toms, suggest Jones's panic as he flees his angry countrymen and his own personal demons. First produced in 1920, The Emperor Jones helped establish O'Neill's reputation as one of America's most important dramatists. Bold and expressionistic, the play was an instant success on the stage and has remained one of the staples of the dramatic repertoire. 64 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Bernard Shaw,
Bernhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig, 1914.
Hardcover (Original Cloth) Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. . Collection of British Authors - Tauchnitz Edition - Vol 4471:Excerpt: ...character, you think? CUTHBERTsoN. Oh, no, no. A scientific man, perhaps, like yourself. But you know what I mean--a MAN. (Strikes himself a sounding blow on the chest.) PARAMoRE. Of course; but Charteris is a man. CUTHBERTsoN. Pah! you don't see what I mean. (The Page Boy returns with his salver.) PAGE BoY (calling rnonotonously as before). Mr. Cuthbertson, Mr. Cuthbertson, Mr. Cuth CUTHBERTsoN. Here, boy. (He takes a card from the salver.) Bring the gentleman up here. (The boy goes out.) It's Craven. He's coming to lunch with me and Charteris. You might join us if you've nothing better to do, when you've finished with the instrument man. If Julia turns up I'll ask her too. PARAMoRE (flushing with pleasure). I shall be very happy. Thank you. (He is going out at the right hand door when Craven enters.) Good morning, Colonel Craven. CRAvEN (at the door). Good morning--glad to see you. I'm looking for Cuthbertson. PARAMoRE (smiling). There he is. (He goes out.) CUTHBERTsoN (greeting Craven effusively). Delighted to see you. Now will you come to the smoking room, or will you sit down here and have a chat while we're waiting for Charteris. If you like company, the smoking room is always full of women. Here we shall have it pretty well all to ourselves until about three o'clock. CRAvEN. I don't like to see women smoking. I'll make myself comfortable here. (Sits in an easy chair on the right.) CUTHBERTsoN (taking a chair beside him, on his left). Neither do I. There's not a room in this club where I can enj oy a pipe quietly without a woman coming in and beginning to roll a cigarette. It's a disgusting habit in a woman: it's not natural to her sex. CRAvEN (sighing). Ah, Jo, times have changed since we both courted Molly Ebden all those years... 295 pages. Spine faded. Three Plays For Puritans
Bernard Shaw,
Constable and Company, London, 1947. Standard Edition
Hardcover Hardcover. Good Condition/Good. Standard Edition. Shaw believed that theatre audiences of the 1890s deserved more than the hollow spectacle and sham he saw displayed on the London stage. But he also recognized that people wanted to be entertained while educated, and to see purpose mixed with pleasure. In these three plays of ideas, Shaw employed traditional dramatic forms - Victorian melodrama, the history play and the adventure story - to turn received wisdom upside down. Set during the American War of Independence, "The Devil's Disciple" exposes fake Puritanism and piety, while "Caesar and Cleopatra", a cheeky riposte to Shakespeare, redefines heroism in the character of the ageing Roman leader. And in Captain Brassbound's "Conversion", an expedition in Morocco is saved from disaster by a lady explorer's skilful manipulation of the truth. 292 pages. Age tanning to pages. Prometheus and Other Plays: Prometheus Bound; The Suppliants; Seven Against Thebes and The Persians
Aeschylus [Phillip Vellacott - Translated with an introduction],
Penguin Classics, London, England., 1966. Reprint
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Reprint. The first of the great Greek Tragedians, Aeschylus wrote a large number of plays, of which seven survive. Of the four included in this volume, The Persians is unique in Greek tragedy in having as its subject matter a recent historical event, the defeat of the Persians at the famous battle of Salamis. The other three, Prometheus, The Suppliants and Seven Against Thebes, were all written as parts of trilogies and take their themes from Greek legend, but in each Aeschylus' interpretation reflects the new morality of classical Athens. Thus, in Seven Against Thebes the fate of the two main figures, Eteocles and Polyneices, is not entirely controlled by the gods, for Eteocles is free to choose whether or not he should fight his brother. And in Prometheus and The Suppliants Aeschylus shows that although the struggle of reason against violence can never be an easy one, it is reason that is the proper principle of civilized life. 160 pages. Serjeant Musgrave’s Dance: An Unhistorical Parable
John Arden,
ISBN: 041330440X
Eyre Methuen, London, 1976. Reprint
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. Reprint. The work follows three privates in the British Army and their sergeant, all of whom are deserters from a foreign imperialist war. Serjeant Musgrave and his men, Hurst, Sparky and Attercliffe, come to a northern English coal mining town in 1879. The community is in the grip of a coal strike and cut off by winter snow. The one means of reaching the town is by canal barge. They arrive in the company of the Bargee, a foul-mouthed, disrespectful individual who teases and abuses everyone, especially those in authority. In the local inn the soldiers meet Mrs. Hitchcock, who runs the inn, and the barmaid Annie. The soldiers are greeted by the mayor, parson and constable, who ask them to recruit men in hopes of alleviating some of the town's unemployment as a way to rid the town of their economic dead weight. Musgrave pretends that this is indeed his goal, and asks Mrs Hitchcock about Billy Hicks, a dead fellow soldier from the mining town. It is revealed that Billy was the father of Annie's illegitimate child, but the baby died, and Annie's sanity has suffered from the loss of both Billy and her child. Words of Advice
Fay Weldon,
ISBN: 0573023387
Samuel French, Great Britain, 1974.
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. . Now, from the writer who made grisly comic fodder of an ugly woman's revenge in The Life and Loves of a She-Devil comes the first novel to take the long, and caustic, view of the feminist orthodoxies of the last 30 years and the women who embraced, disseminated, and were sometimes disappointed by them. Deftly managing the biggest cast she's yet conjured, Fay Weldon recounts the 1971 founding of distaff Medusa Press by a goofily believable gaggle of British feminists--Stephanie, the beautiful one; Alice, the philosopher; Layla, the ambitious; Nancy the organized, who becomes Medusa's office manager; blonde Daffy, of the breeder urges; Zoe, the wife and mother who writes a feminist classic and commits suicide, the novel's sole victim of patriarchal oppression. Everyone else, male and female alike, is more the casualty of ideas at odds with desires and the inexorable ironies of trickster time. A lot of the comedy is deadpan, funny because it's true--who but Weldon would risk admitting that the venerable feminist saying A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle is a head-scratchingly opaque bit of sloganeering? 25 pages. Shakespeare in Toast
Ben Crystal,
ISBN: 9781848310544
Icon Books, Great Britain, 2009.
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. . Who's afraid of William Shakespeare? Just about everyone. He wrote too much and what he did write is inaccessible and elitist. Right? Wrong. "Shakespeare on Toast" knocks the stuffing from the staid old myth of Shakespeare, revealing the man and his plays for what they really are: modern, thrilling and uplifting drama. Actor and author Ben Crystal brings the bright words and colourful characters of the world's greatest hack writer brilliantly to life, handing over the key to Shakespeare's plays, unlocking the so called difficult bits and, astonishingly, finding Shakespeare's own voice amid the poetry. Told in five fascinating Acts, "Shakespeare on Toast" sweeps the cobwebs from the Bard - from his language, his life, his time - revealing both the man and his work to be relevant, accessible and full of beans. 263 pages. Hamnlet, Prince of Denmark [The New Cambridge Shakespeare]
Norman Sanders [Editor],
ISBN: 0521293669
Cambridge Univ. Press, Great Britain, 1999. Updated Edition
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. Updated Edition. Among Shakespeare's plays, "Hamlet" is considered by many his masterpiece. Among actors, the role of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is considered the jewel in the crown of a triumphant theatrical career. Now Kenneth Branagh plays the leading role and co-directs a brillant ensemble performance. Three generations of legendary leading actors, many of whom first assembled for the Oscar-winning film "Henry" V, gather here to perform the rarely heard complete version of the play. This clear, subtly nuanced, stunning dramatization, presented by The Renaissance Theatre Company in association with "Bbc" Broadcasting, features such luminaries as Sir John Gielgud, Derek Jacobi, Emma Thompson and Christopher Ravenscroft. It combines a full cast with stirring music and sound effects to bring this magnificent Shakespearen classic vividly to life. Revealing new riches with each listening, this production of "Hamlet" is an invaluable aid for students, teachers and all true lovers of Shakespeare -- a recording to be treasured for decades to come. 245 pages. Waiting for Godot: A Tragicomedy in Two Acts
Samuel Beckett,
ISBN: 0571058086
Faber and Faber, Great Britain, 1971. Reprint
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Reprint. Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it's awful.' This line from the play was adopted by Jean Anouilh to characterize the first production of Waiting for Godot at the Theatre de Babylone in 1953. He went on to predict that the play would, in time, represent the most important premiere to be staged in Paris for forty years. Nobody acquainted with Beckett's masterly black comedy would now question this prescient recognition of a classic of twentieth-century literature. Three Plays: Juno and The Paycock; The Shadow of a Gunman; The Plough and the Stars
Sean O’Casey,
ISBN: 0333026659
Papermac, Great Britain, 1978.
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. . Sean O'Casey was born in 1880 and lived through a bitterly hard boyhood in a Dublin tenement house. He never went to school but received most of his education in the streets of Dublin, and taught himself to read at the age of fourteen. He was successively a newspaper-seller, docker, stone-breaker, railway-worker and builders' labourer. In 1913 he helped to organise the Irish Citizen Army which fought in the streets of Dublin, and at the same time he was learning his dramatic technique by reading Shakespeare and watching the plays of Dion Boucicault. His early works were performed at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, and Lady Gregory made him welcome at Coole, but disagreement followed and after visiting America in the late thirties O'Casey settled in Devonshire. He lived there until his death in 1964, though still drawing the themes of many of his plays from the life he knew so well on the banks of the Liffey. Out of the ceaseless dramatic experimenting in his plays O'Casey created a flamboyance and versatility that sustain the impression of bigness of mind that is inseparable from his tragi-comic vision of life. 218 pages. 'Bernard Shaw was born in Dublin of Protestant stock, in 1856, and died at Ayot St Lawrence, Herts, in 1950. After a false start in nineteenth-century fashion as a novelist, he made a reputation as a journalist-critic of books, pictures, music, and the drama. Meanwhile he had plunged into the Socialist revival of the eighteen-eighties and come out as one of the leaders who made the Fabian Society famous, figuring prominently not only as a pamphleteer and platform orator, but as a serious philosopher, and publishing major essays on Ibsen and Wagner. He broke out in a new direction in 1892 as a playwright, although it was not until some twelve years later that the opposition he had always to irresistible force in theatre.' 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Meet John Doe
Capra, Frank Director (Charles Wolfe Editor),
ISBN: 0813513871
Rutgers University Press, New Brunswick and London, 1989. First Edition
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. Illustrator: Photographic. First Edition. acknowledgements, introduction Authors, Audiences and Endings by Charles Wolfe, Frank Capra: A Biographical Sketch and selected bibliography. The text is illustrated with the occasional black-and-white film still. Photographic card cover with black coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. "The third film in a celebrated trilogy of socio-political dramas directed by Frank Capra in the late 1930s and early 1940s, Meet John Doe is arguably his most ambitious and disturbing work. Similar To Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Meet John Doe placed its hero at the center of a topical political crisis in America, in this instance the threat of a fascist coup by a media tycoon. But Meet John Joe complicated the motives of its hero and heroine, and the behaviour of it's erstwhile constituency the "little people" to such a degree that the comic triumph marking the ending of the earlier films was thrown into doubt. Produced independently by Capra and screenwriter Robert Riskin in the months prior to America's entry into World War II, Meet John Doe attracted widespread attention both within the film industry and without, and a search to a satisfactory ending to eat was a matter of much critical discussion and debate." From the rear panel blurb. The full script is within the book along with reviews, commentaries and contexts. Creasing to the book corners and to the top. Backstrip edge.
