You Shall Be As Gods - A Radical Interpretation of The Old Testament and its Tradition
Fromm, Erich
Henry Holt - An Owl Book 1991  1991
8vo. Soft cover. 241pp. Index. very good. The Old Testament is one of the most carefully studied books in the world’s history. It is also one of the most misunderstood. This founding text of the world’s three largest religions is also, Erich Fromm argues, an impressive radical humanist text. He sees the stories of mankind’s transition from divided clans to united brotherhood as a tribute to the human power to overcome. Filled with hopeful symbolism, You Shall Be As Gods shows how the Old Testament and its tradition is an inspiring ode to human potential.

The Sane Society
Fromm, Erich
ISBN: 0805014020
Henry Holt - An Owl Book 1990  1990
8vo. Soft cover. 370pp. Index. very good. A critique of contemporary capitalism. The Sane Society anaylses how individuals conform to contemporary capitalist and patriarchal societies, the book was published to wide acclaim and even wider disapproval. It was a scathing indictment of modern capitalism and as such proved unwelcome to many. Unwelcome because much of what Fromm had to say was true. Today, as we settle into the challenges of the 21st century, Fromm's writings are just as relevant as when they were first written in 1955.

The Life and Work of Sigmund Freud 3 Vol. in Slipcase
Jones, Ernest MD
Basic Books 1963  1963
Large 8vo's. Cloth. Slipcase very good. Copies have a lightly faded spine, however the copies are very good with only the po name on fep. Here in dramatic detail, is the story of Freud's childhood and adolescence; his courtship and marriage, revealed in 900 hitherto-secret love letters; the freeing of his creative powers through self-analysis; his bitter struggles for recognition and his ascent to fame. Of particular interest, is Dr. Jones's graphic description of how Freud penetrated the mysteries of dreams and sexuality and developed the science of psychoanalysis.

Beyond the Human Condition
Griffith, Jeremy
ISBN: 0646039946
FHA Publishing & Communications, 1991  1991
8vo softcover 203pp very good, spine faded. Jeremy Griffith's second book that gives a detailed account of the biology underpinning the explanation of the human condition. Charles Darwin connected humans with nature but there biology has been stalled, unable to explain the dilemma of the human condition. Griffith's answer defends and dignifies humans, it lifts the burden of guilt, making possible our species' psychological rehabilitation; the real repair of ourselves and our planet. Foreword by twice honoured Order of Australia recipient and renowned mountaineer Tim Macartney-Snape AM, who says of the book ‘Griffith's explanations have clarified so much that was inexplicable about myself and what goes on in the world. It is like having mist lift from country you've never seen in clear weather. This book could well have as much impact on humanity as the Bible.' It examines issues such as science & religion, politics and psychiatry.

The secret ring: Freud’s inner circle and the politics of psychoanalysis (Unknown Binding)
Grosskurth, Phyllis
ISBN: 0201090376
Addison-Wesley 1991  1991
8vo hardcover 245pp index, b/w illus. very good / very good d/w. From Kirkus Reviews Aided by previously undisclosed correspondence, Grosskurth (Havelock Ellis, 1980, etc.; Humanities and Psychoanalytic Thought/Univ. of Toronto) takes the story of the brilliant, wildly neurotic men who contrived to safeguard Freudian thought and turns it into an intriguing psychological saga-cum-tragicomedy of manners. The Secret Committee, conceived in 1912 as a united front against the apostasy of Carl Jung and sealed by Freud's bestowal of antique intaglios, became, notes Grosskurth, a metaphor for the psychoanalytic movement itself...a cult of personality with Freud acting as both guru and distant, demanding father. Avidly submitting one another (and assorted romantic interests) to frequently scathing and self-justifying formal and informal analyses, Austrians Otto Rank and Hans Sachs, Hungarian Sandor Ferenczi, German Karl Abraham, and Welshman Ernest Jones, joined later by Russian-born German Max Eitingon, functioned as surrogate sons within a strikingly dysfunctional family--marked by sabotage, manipulation, and aggressively infantile jostling. Treating her story as a study of group pathology, Grosskurth uses pointed quotes to show how all of her subjects, especially Freud, used jargon as a cover for real feeling. Sadder still was the adored Freud's puzzling lack of support (he refused to be ``burdened'' by the ideas of others) and human empathy (e.g., failing to comprehend the sensitive Ferenczi's sorrow at his mother's death). Inevitably, as Freud predicted in Totem and Taboo, the anointed sons went their own ways, with, ironically, Freud's biological child, Anna, emerging as his staunchest defender.

Alternatives Beyond Psychiatry
Stastny, Peter (Other Contributor), Peter Lehmann, Preface by Robert Whitaker.
ISBN: 0978839919
Peter Lehmann Pub. January 2007  2007
8vo softcover 431pp near fine. New in wrapper. The great book of alternatives to psychiatry around the world. (Ex-) users and survivors of psychiatry, therapists, psychiatrists, lawyers, social scientists and relatives report about their alternative work, their successes, their individual and collective experiences. The book highlights alternatives beyond psychiatry, current possibilities of self-help for individuals experiencing madness, and strategies toward implementing humane treatment. These are some of the questions, which are addressed by the 61 authors—(ex-) users and survivors of psychiatry, medical practitioners, therapists, lawyers, social scientists, psychiatrists and relatives from all continents: What helps me if I go mad? How can I find trustworthy help for a relative or a friend in need? How can I protect myself from coercive treatment? As a family member or friend, how can I help? What should I do if I can no longer bear to work in the mental health field? What are the alternatives to psychiatry? How can I get involved in creating alternatives? Assuming psychiatry would be abolished, what do you propose instead?

Unexpected Legacy of Divorce
Wallerstein, Judith Et Al
HarperCollins Publishers June 28, 2001  2001
8vo softcover 347pp near fine. Twenty-five years ago, when the impact of divorce on children was not well understood, Wallerstein began what has now become the largest study on the subject, and this book, presents the psychologist's startling findings. By tracking approximately 100 children as they forge their lives as adults, she has found that contrary to the popular belief that kids would bounce back after the initial pain of their parents' split, children of divorce often continue to suffer well into adulthood. Their pain plays out in their relationships, their work lives and their confidence about parenting themselves. Wallerstein argues that although the situation is dire, there is hope to be found at the end of good counseling and healing.

Who Needs Light?
May, Katherine E.
ISBN: 9781468507010
Author House 2011  2011
Trade paperback. 500pp. Near fine. Who Needs Light? is a prescription for what ails "the general suffering public" in our families and communities throughout the world's philosophically Cartesian cultures where thought is seen as more valuable than emotion. Beginning with infant brain development, the author identifies startlingly familiar influences of Darkness from a new point of view-that of the difference between Head People and Heart People. The book includes a guide which defines the characteristics and habits of Abusive Personality Types. In lay terms, it shows how to identify and avoid these archetypal "Children of Darkness" wherever one might find them. Dr. May uses case studies, meditative exercises, original poetry, science and oral history to lead us stepbystep through the oppressive forces of materialism, selfcenteredness and authoritarian religions which have shaped our presentday civilization. Her final vision is one of hope and radical spiritual evolution.

Sex and Gender
Archer, John and Barbara Lloyd
ISBN: 0521635330
Cambridge University Press August 12, 2002  2002
8vo softcover 294pp very good. This second edition of John Archer and Barbara Lloydas Sex and Gender is extremely wide-ranging and tackles challenging theoretical issues, including the ultimate origins of sex differences in human behavior. In bringing social, developmental, and evolutionary theories to bear on many different types of female and male behaviors, Archer and Lloyd have produced an intellectually sophisticated text. Yet, the writing is engaging and accessible to undergraduates. Another plus is that the research covered in the book stems from a wide range of cultures. This is a truly outstanding book! Sex and Gender (2nd edt.) is a substantially revised edition of a classic text. Adopting a balanced approach to the often controversial study of sex differences, the authors introduce the reader to the fundamental questions relating to sex and gender in an accessible way. Drawing on the latest research, new developments are explored such as the rise of evolutionary psychology and the influence of Social Role Theory as well as new psychoanalytic and ethno-methodological approaches which have all contributed to a greater understanding of the complex nature of masculinity and femininity.

Different Kids Growing Up with Attention Deficit Disorder
Dengate, Sue
Random House Australia 1994
Paperback 264 crisp white pages of invaluable advice & info, Millions of children, some as young as two years old, now take stimulant drugs such as Ritalin to control their behaviour. But there is another way. Through an exciting, can't-put-it-down story, Different Kids presents an effective alternative to medication for managing children's behaviour. Author Sue Dengate is a former school teacher and behaviour management instructor couldn't manage her own children's behaviour. After years of trial and error, she discovered that new Australian research about food intolerance provided the best treatment for her children's attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiance and learning difficulties. A best-seller in Australia and now available in the USA, it introduces a form of dietary management based on new Australian research, which is so far unknown in the U.S.  Very Good/None issued

A Nietzsche Reader
Hollingdale, RJ (& Nietzsche)
Penguin  1977
Paperback Less than 500g, 286pp The literary career of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) spanned less than twenty years, but no area of intellectual inquiry was left untouched by his iconoclastic genius. The philosopher who announced the death of God in The Gay Science (1882) and went on to challenge the Christian code of morality in Beyond Good and Evil (1886), grappled with the fundamental issues of the human condition in his own intense autobiography, Ecce Homo (1888). Most notorious of all, perhaps, his idea of the triumphantly transgressive übermann ('superman') is developed in the extreme, yet poetic words of Thus Spake Zarathustra (1883-92). Whether addressing conventional Western philosophy or breaking new ground, Nietzsche vastly extended the boundaries of nineteenth-century thought. review says >>> Nietzsche yells out that God is dead and he’s glad for that. Christianity shuts us down, tells us we are bad and tells us how to be good. Christianity is his primary target, but he’s also against our tribal life that creates conformity (the herd mentality). Philosophers are prime targets as well. Plato, Kant and others insist on a universality that buries the individual. The will-to-power is about the will-to-live, to seek what we need and to defend against what we don’t need. Collectively, life is “appropriation” and “self-preservation.” There is nothing wrong with animal instincts he says, but there is everything wrong with religious, social, and ethical rules that tell us that we are bad beings. Faults? crease on cover, maybe it was the prev owner's repression being expressed. . ??  Good/None issued

Palmer, Michael,
ISBN: 0415147476
Routledge, London, 1997. First Edition
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. First Edition. Michael Palmer's book provides a detailed account of the theories of religion of both Freud and Jung – widely held to be the 2 most important theories of religion in the history of psychology. In the first section of the text Palmer analyses Freud's claim that religion is an obsessional neurosis - a psychological illness fuelled by sexual repression. The second section considers Jung's rejection of Freud's theory and his own assertion that it is the absence of religion, not its presence, which leads to neurosis. Freud and Jung on Religion is suitable for general and specialist reader alike, as it assumes no prior knowledge of the theories of Freud or Jung. – rear panel boiled a secondhand book, free of annotation, and with only a slight rubbing at the top right hand corner of the illustrated front cover. Tales of the Internal Saboteur
Wahr, George,
ISBN: 1920785795
Brolga Publishing, Melbourne, 2006. First Edition
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. First Edition. Signed by Author. Have you ever had a bill to pay and when you’ve gone to pay it realised you’ve just missed the deadline? Or have you slipped behind on your tax return and every time you plan to sort it out something else will come up? Or are you looking for a loving partner but everyone you seem to attract ends up cheating on you? Is it all bad luck? Bad management? Or could it be something else? Could it be that the cause of all your problems is staring you in the mirror — YOU! Tales of the Internal Saboteur is a collection of stories gathered over the years by Melbourne Psychiatrist Dr George Wahr. In these stories, Dr Wahr shows us how, at times, we are our own worst enemies. We sabotage ourselves unwittingly over and over again. The Internal Saboteur is that part of ourselves that our conscious mind doesn’t even know exists and its sole purpose is to undermine our conscious self. You will be fascinated by these tales as Dr Wahr shines light into the dark recesses of our mind. There is no damage to describe. A Family in Therapy
McCallum, Peter & Lang, Moshe,
ISBN: 0140120785
Penguin, Ringwood, Victoria, 1989. First Edition
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. First Edition. This book provides a transcript of a series of therapy sessions with one family who agreed to the videotaping of their sessions for educational purposes. Accompanying the transcript are brief commentaries made by the authors from their observations of the videotapes. The views of a team of professionals who examined the transcripts and tapes are also provided at the end of the book. The result is a stimulating volume which gives the reader a rare opportunity to witness a family’s journey through therapy. The brief commentaries throughout provide clarification and elaboration about the session content and the invited professionals’ comments give a variety of perspectives which allow the reader to compare against one’s own interpretation. The book is well set out, easy to read, and informative. The combination of therapy transcripts and expert commentary and interpretation makes it a fresh and engaging volume. The flexibility in theoretical stance demonstrated by Lang does not take away from his therapeutic interventions but rather provides an exciting framework from which he operates. The book has wide appeal, particularly for those training in family therapy. Christine Senediak, Merrylands Community Health Centre. Publication Reference: Senediak, C. (1990). A Family in Therapy. The Doctor And The Soul - From Psychotherapy To Logotherapy

Pelican Books / Penguin Books, Harmondsworth, Middlesex, 1973. reprint
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. reprint. the book is clean and free of damage that could not be ascribed to ageing. (The page edges are browning). "Why do I go on living? Is there any meaning to life? Can a doctor help a patient "to shake his suffering into the inner achievement"?" In this important book the author, the internecine acclaimed Viennese psychiatrist, discusses these questions and defines his revolutionary theory of logotherapy and the concept of the "will to meaning". Drawing on his experiences in Nazi concentration camps Doctor Frankl maintains contrary to Freud, that the most important need of the individual is to find a meaning in life and that the frustration of this need results in neurosis, suffering and despair." – Rear panel blurb Size: 12mo (standard paperback). 272 pages. Loveworks; How the world’s top marketers make emotional connections to win in the marketplace
Sheehan, Brian,
ISBN: 1576876403
powerHouse Books, Brooklyn, 2013. First Edition
Hardcover (Laminated Illustrated boards) Hardcover (Laminated Illustrated boards). Very Good Condition/. First Edition. In 2004 Kevin Roberts wrote Lovemarks: the future beyond brands. It was admired by many as a breakthrough in marketing thinking but was also controversial because of its surprisingly obvious thesis: that emotional connections are at the heart of sustained relationships between producers, retailers, and consumers. While many companies were using the language of war in their marketing (target, penetrate, ambush), Roberts was using the language of love (mystery, sensuality, intimacy). He explained in simple terms what people are often loath to admit: we make decisions with our emotions over our reason. Lovemarks described the journey by which brands could move from consumer respect based on intellect, to consumer love based on emotion -- and in return gain "loyalty beyond reason." Full number line.  Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. reprint. Anxiety may be debilitating or stimulating; it can result in neurotic symptoms or in improved, heightened performance in an actor or athlete. It is something every human being has experienced. As Professor G. M. Carstairs points out in his Foreword: "During the course of the twentieth century we have found it progressively easier to concede that we are all to often swayed by emotion rather than reason. We have come to recognise the symptoms of neurotically ill patients are only an exaggeration of experiences common to us all, and hence that the unraveling of the psychodynamics of neurosis can teach us more about ourselves." the book is clean, and free of annotation, slight rubbing of the edges of the spine section of the paperback binding. Every culture, in every era, has its adventure myths: The golden hero willing to walk through fire elevates us all beyond our fears and limits. But more often than readily seen, there are darker reasons for dangerous pursuits. Where falls the line between adventure and madness? Geoff Powter, a practicing clinical psychologist, looks into the stories of eleven troubled adventurers, divided into three categories: The Burdened, The Bent, and The Lost. In each of these stories, darkness of some kind -- ambition, ego, a thirst for redemption, the need to please others -- carried these characters in a perilous direction. In the end, understanding these difficult but utterly human stories helps us comprehend the deepest purpose and allure of adventure, and, ultimately, to more honestly measure ourselves. History of the Concept of Mind: Speculations about Soul, Mind and Spirit from Homer to Hume
MacDonald, Paul S.,
ISBN: 9780754613657
Ashgate Publishing Limited, United Kingdom, 2003. First Edition
Softcover Softcover. Fine Condition/. First Edition. First Impression. Size: 8vo Octavo (standard book size). 398 pages. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. This book is available and will be shipped within two business days. All items are tracked and details are available on request. . Exploring the 'roads less travelled', MacDonald continues his monumental essay in the history of ideas. The history of heterodox ideas about the concept of mind takes the reader from the earliest records about human nature in Ancient Egypt, the Ancient Near East, and the Zoroastrian religion, through the secret teachings in the Hermetic and Gnostic scriptures, and into the transformation of ideas about the mind, soul and spirit in the late antique and early medieval epochs. These transitions include discussion of the influence of Central Asian shamanism, Manichean ideas about the soul in light and darkness, and Neoplatonic theurgy, 'working-on-god-within'. Sections on the medieval period are concerned with the rediscovery of magical practices and occult doctrines from Roger Bacon to Francis Bacon, the adaptation of Neoplatonic and esoteric ideas in the medieval Christian mystics, and the survival of these ideas mixed with natural science in the works of von Helmont, Leibniz and Goethe. The book concludes with an investigation of the many forms of dualism in accounts of the human mind and soul, and the concept of dual-life which underpins our aspiration to understand how humans could have an immortal nature like the gods. Depression: The Way Out of Your Prison gives us a way of understanding our depression which matches our experience and which enables us to take charge of our life and change it. Dorothy Rowe shows us that depression is not an illness or a mental disorder but a defence against pain and fear, which we can use whenever we suffer a disaster and discover that our life is not what we thought it was. Depression is an unwanted consequence of how we see ourselves and the world. By understanding how we have interpreted events in our life we can choose to change our interpretations and thus create for ourselves a happier, more fulfilling life. Life has often been envisioned as a journey, the river of time carrying us inexorably toward the unknown country—and in our day we increasingly turn to myth and magic, ritual and virtual reality, cloning and cryostasis in the hope of eluding the reality of the inevitable end. In this book a preeminent and eminently wise writer on death and dying proposes a new way of understanding our last transition. A fresh exploration of the final passage through life and perhaps through death, his work deftly interweaves historical and contemporary experiences and reflections to demonstrate that we are always on our way. Revolution In Mind: The Creation Of Psychoanalysis
Makari, George,
ISBN: 0061346624
HarperPerennial, New York, 2009. First Edition
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. First Edition. second-hand copy, the only damage to the book is an abrasion from sticker removal, over the barcode on the rear panel. Internally clean, no annotations. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Revolution in mind is a historical examination of the core questions at the heart of this most influential theory of human inner life. Many of these questions remain unresolved this day, for this is an unfinished story of a complex, perhaps impossible endeavour. It is the story of a group of doctors, philosophers, scientists, and writers trying to grasp that most ephemeral and yet maddeningly obvious thing: the mind. It is the story also of a political world that for a short, fertile time allowed men and women the freedom to examine the potentially explosive question of what makes us human. – Page VI paraphrased Full number line.
