Anatomy of a Naval Disaster: The 1746 French Expedition to North America
Pritchard, James
McGill Queen's University Press Canada 1995
Hardcover 322 pp, 900g packed for post. This is an account of one of the most ambitious and catastrophic French naval expeditions in the 18th century, resulting in the deaths of up to 8000 men. It exposes the ambitions and frailties of men, the arbitrariness of success, and the limits of power in the 18th century. Intended as a riposte to the Anglo-American capture of Loisbourg in 1745, the so-called d'Enville expedition set out from France the following year to secure Canada, recapture Acadia and Louisbourg, and ravage the New England coast as far south as Boston. Many of the 64 French vessels involved did not return and estimates of the dead reached as high as 8000, yet the enemy was never met in battle. James Pritchard's account of this naval fiasco sheds new light on the extent of the tragedy and raises questions about the role and effectiveness of naval power during the intercolonial wars of the mid-18th century. Pritchard describes the domestic and international political circumstances in France that gave rise to the expedition, outlining strategy and politics in the context of colonial defence and continental ambition. He reconstructs the events that contributed to the failure of the expedition: human and institutional weakness, weather, spoiled provisions, disease and the death of the commanding admiral.  Excellent/Very Good/Very Good

Hore, Capt. Peter

Convoy Protection, The Defence of Seaborne Trade
Kemp, Paul
Arms and Armour Press UK 1993
Hardcover Convoy Protection, The Defence of Seaborne Trade - The author examines the strategy of convoy in 20th century warfare focusing upon two major case histories: Britain and the U-boats in the First World War and America against the Japanese two decades later. The author demonstrates how the adoption of the convoy system defeated the German U-boats in 1917, and points to the US Navy’s submarine campaign to show how Japanese maritime trade was utterly destroyed when the system was not put into proper effect. Britain was slow to learn these lessons during the First World War (her experience during the Napoleonic Wars had been forgotten), depending instead on her mighty battle-fleet. Japan ignored Briton’s lessons by neglecting to construct escort vessels for merchant ship protection. Contains 96 photographs. 124pp & less than 500g for post.   Excellent/Good

Panama Fever The Battle to Build the Canal
Parker, Matthew
Hutchinson UK 2007
Hardcover Despite being ex-lib it looks as though it was only borrowed by one little old lady (& she wore white gloves!) 444 pp in jolly nice order, 800g for posting. "Panama Fever" traces a heroic dream that spanned four centuries: to build a canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The human cost was immense: in appalling working conditions and amid epidemics of fever, tens of thousands perished fighting the jungle, swamps and mountains of Panama, a scale of attrition comparable to many great battles. This is a remarkable book about empire and technology. Starting as a story of European Victorian confidence and hubris, it develops, via one of history's greatest engineering disasters, into an account of America's ruthless triumph over vast obstacles as it moves forward to dominate the twentieth century. Matthew Parker explores the fierce geo-political struggle behind the heroic vision of the canal, and the immense engineering and medical battles that were fought. review >>> The book is written with a sure feel for the grand sweep of history  Very Good/Very Good

The Silent Service The Inside Story of the Royal Navy’s Submarine Heroes
Parker, John

The Loss Of The Bismarck: An Avoidable Disaster
Graham Rhys-Jones
CasselL & Co London  1999 1st
Hardcover The Loss Of The Bismarck: An Avoidable Disaster, 255pp with photos amidships, content > The battleship "Bismarck", flagship of the German Fleet Commander and one of the most powerful warships in the world, was sunk by the British on her maiden voyage, 27 May 1941. It was an irretrievable disaster for German naval strategy. This book seeks the answer to the question: who was to blame? By closely examining the role of high command in German strategic and operational decisions, and drawing on all known sources, the author shows how the disaster is the likely result of military strategy that refuses to move with the times. Graham Rhys-Jones was a Royal Navy aviation and anti-submarine specialist, serving in the Fleet Air Arm and in surface ships. He commanded a frigate when it was still fashionable to chase Russians. He held two appointments in Whitehall, and spent two years at the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, teaching strategy and operations to senior US and international personnel. He is now a defence consultant, and writes and lectures on maritime topics.  Very Good/Very Good

The Great Naval Race: Anglo-German Naval Rivalry 1900-1914
Padfield, Peter
Hart-Davis MacGibbon UK 1974 1st
Hardcover In this carefully researched book, acclaimed naval historian Peter Padfield challenges the long-held assumption that the outbreak of the First World War was the inevitable result of an armaments race between Britain and Germany. The personalities involved decisively influenced the course of events; and the German High Command actively conspired to manoeuvre towards conflict. He vividly portrays the leading protagonists in the drama - Kaiser Wilhelm and the megalomaniacal Admiral Tirpitz, and the British's Admiral Fisher. 382 crisp pp with photos amidships, 800g packed for post review >>> A favourite on this topic it is concise but brilliantly written, capturing the passion and urgency of these events with a Kiplingesque energy. While clearly lionising Fisher and Edward VII at the expense of Tirpitz and the Kaiser it is hard not to argue that the court of history has dealt the 'villians' of this piece an equally ignoble verdict.   Very Good/Very Good

Simply Fish

B+W line drawings. 333 pages. enthusiastic review > I would strongly recommend this recipe book to anyone who wants to eat more fish. Whilst Rick Stein has managed to catch the nation's imagination and encourage a renaissance in seafood cuisine, and for encyclopedic knowledge I would recommend Jane Grigson's Fish Book, what Jenny Baker has managed to do is collect a book full of delicious recipes for most fish you may encounter that may be attempted in an average kitchen, with normal ingredients, within a reasonable length of time. Deadliest Sea The Untold Story Behind the Greatest Rescue in Coast Guard History
Thompson, Kaylee
William Morrow & Company
Hardcover Soon after 2:00 A.M. on Easter morning, March 23, 2008, the fishing trawler "Alaska Ranger" began taking on water in the middle of the frigid Bering Sea. While the first mate broadcast Mayday calls to a remote Coast Guard station more than eight hundred miles away, the men on the ship's icy deck scrambled to inflate life rafts and activate the beacon lights, which would guide rescuers to them in the water. By 4:30 A.M., the wheelhouse of the "Ranger" was just barely visible above the sea's surface, and most of the forty-seven crew members were in the water, wearing the red survival suits--a number of them torn or inadequately sized--that were supposed to keep them from freezing to death. Every minute in the twenty-foot swells was a fight for survival. Many knew that if they weren't rescued soon, they would drown or freeze to death. 309 perfect pp  Excellent/Excellent

Tilikum Luxton’s Pacific Crossing
Luxton, Norman
Key Porter Books  2002
Papeback What's the book about you ask - well, In 1901, Norman moved west to Vancouver where he briefly worked for a weekly called Town Topics. While in Vancouver, Norman met Captain John Voss, an eccentric sea captain. The two planned a most adventurous voyage. They would purchase a 100-year old Nootka dugout canoe and sail it around the world, leaving from Victoria, British Columbia and heading west to London.[3] The dugout canoe was named the Tilikum, meaning friend in Chinook Jargon. Luxton journeyed 10,000 miles (about 16000 km) on the Pacific Ocean with Voss, and endured five months of travel, before the Tilikum struck a reef and Luxton was thrown from the boat. His whole body was badly cut by coral, and he had to abandon the trip in Fiji, and was immediately taken to a hospital in Australia.[4] Following this, Luxton came to Banff to recuperate. He kept notes of the voyage; his Tilikum Journal, edited by his daughter Eleanor was published in 1971. 166pp with some bw pix  Good/None issued

How to Fish
Yates, Chris
Hamish Hamilton UK 2006
Hardcover 242pp, scattered foxing to compressed page edges, The book -Sitting on a riverbank, with rod and line, must count as one of the most relaxing and enjoyable - yet occasionally frustrating - experiences known to man. Chris Yates discovered the joys of fishing early in life and was quickly hooked by its pleasures. Many years later, he is still content to sit, day after day, observing the quirks of different fish and losing track of time. For him, fishing is much more than just a question of technique; sometimes it's about listening to nothing but your instincts, and at other times it's about enjoying the perfect cup of tea. And, it's always about not knowing how the day is going to unfold...There's no better guide for the uninitiated - and no better companion for those already familiar with the satisfactions of fishing - than Chris Yates. And, immersing yourself in "How To Fish" is almost as delightful an activity as fishing itself. the Author - Chris Yates is a photographer and an author, but first and foremost a fisherman. He was first inspired by the discovery of a monster carp in his village pond when he was five. Thirty years later, he caught what was then the biggest carp -- and the biggest fish -- in England and went on to write about his experiences in books, in his own magazine, in radio programmes and in the BBC2 series A Passion for Angling. He lives in south Wiltshire.   Very Good/Very Good

Mediterranean Cruising Handbook
Heikell, Rod
Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson Ltd  1990 3rd Edition
Laminated Pictorial Boards Rod Heikell was born in New Zealand in 1949 and sailed hesitantly around bits of it’s coast in a variety of yachts. He tried racing in the Hauraki Gulf but was really not much good at it. In England he abandoned academic life and for no good reason other than curiosity, he bought Roulette, a 1950’s plywood JOG yacht nearly 20ft long, and sailed it down to the Mediterranean. He worked on charter here and delivered yachts until, in ignorance of the scale of the task, he set off to write a yachtsman’s guide to Greece. This was followed by guides for other countries in the Mediterranean. 200pp of invaluable info with numerous bw illus & photos.  Excellent/None Issued

Dorothy Elizabeth : Building a Traditional Wooden Schooner
Duncan, Roger F
W. W. Norton & Company NY 200
Hardcover From the dust jacket: "This is the story of Dorothy Elizabeth, a 28-foot schooner. Particularly, it is the story of why to build a traditional wooden sailing vessel that relies on age-old methods and materials, yet also embraces newfangled technologies. But mostly it is the story of the people--the score of craftsmen and craftswomen, friends, and family--who give their skill, advice, support, and time to turn Dorothy Elizabeth from an idea into a graceful, seaworthy reality. You will meet Ralph Stanley of Southwest Harbor, Maine, one of the world's great designers and builders of traditional wooden boats, and a disarmingly plainspoken master craftsmen in the maritime Maine tradition. You will meet Mary Chandler Duncan, a poet and the author's wife, soul mate, and first mate. You will meet Nat Wilson, sail maker, who took time out from building topsails for the USS Constitution to build sails for Dorothy Elizabeth. You will meet Frank Luke, neighbor, boatyard owner, all-around helper, and the man who launched Dorothy Elizabeth. And you will meet many other singular people up and down the coast from Portland, Maine, to Lunnenberg, Nova Scotia and beyond, drawn together by the building of a boat. 240 pages, slight mark on dj  Excellent/Good

Hill David

William Heinemann  2008 First Edition
Paperback As New condition. "Never before or since has there been an experiment quite as bold as this. Eleven of the tiniest ships sailed for eight months over the roughest of seas, carrying fifteen hundred people, food for two years and all the equipment needed to build a colony of convicts in a land completely beyond their experience and imagination. In Portsmouth the fleet's preparation was characterised by disease, promiscuity and death. The journey itself was one of unbearable hardship, but also of extraordinary resilience, with the majority of settlers and exiles making it alive to the new colony at Sydney Cove. There, however, they faced their biggest challenge of all; conflict, starvation and despair."  As New

The Bitter Sea: The Struggle for Mastery in the Mediterranean 1935-1949
Ball, Simon
Harper Press  2009
Paperback A lucid and masterly biography of the Mediterranean during a time of war, from Mussolini’s audacious bid for conquest to the creation of Israel and the start of the Cold War. The Bitter Sea is a fascinating interpretation of world affairs and a significant contribution to twentieth century history. With incisive strategic and political analysis, Simon Ball demonstrates in this dramatic narrative how the Mediterranean Sea lay at the heart of recent world history. 380pp, 2 photo sections, 750g packed for post. review >>>> An excellent history of the Mediterranean naval war which restores balance by giving appropriate weight to the courage and effectiveness of Italian naval forces. The political back biting and manipulation amongst the higher levels of the British naval forces was new to me and fascinating as was the extent of strong Nazi sympathy amongst the French naval establishment.  Very Good - Good/None issued
