In Search Of Lost Gods : A Guide to British Folklore
Whitlock, Ralph
ISBN: 0714820261
Phaidon, United Kingdom, 1979. First Edition
Hardcover Hardcover. Good Condition/Good. First Edition. ""The sight of people performing actions that seem superficially strange prompts an inquiry into not only what they are doing but why. In the context of folklore the participants often do not know the answer. They are repeating a ritual inherited from generations of ancestors, & often the explanations they give are garbled. By probing deep, however, it is usually possible to discover some grain of logic behind what may seem to be absurd behaviour or belief. Civilization tends to be a rather thin veneer concealing a mass of instincts & atavistic memories...A student of folklore encounters a number of strata of religious beliefs & practices associated with a succession of invaders..., all overlying a basic animism. A constant figure in ancient mythology was the Earth Mother, still remembered in the Corn Goddess of Kern Baby, whose image in straw is fashioned to celebrate the climax of harvest...In this book, the distinguished author of a number of volumes on folklore, surveying the field, attempts to inspire readers to look further for themselves, confident that in the quest they will arrive at a deeper understanding of human behaviour." The submerged continents are described in graphic detail -- their location, history, flora and fauna, human inhabitants, customs, science, religion, and contact with advanced teachers. The information comes from the writings of Plato, from the esoteric tradition as set forth in The Secret Doctrine of H.P. Blavatsky, and from the clairvoyant writings of C.W. The will to protest, the will to unite, the will to laugh at the wooden-faced absurdities of racial discrimination – these find their symbol in the figure of the Tokolosh, whose power is told on the frightening morning when the great cities left almost helpless, because it's black servants had refused to come." Siva’s Warriors: The Basava Purana of Palkuriki Somanatha (Princeton Library of Asian Translations)
Somanatha, Palkuriki (Rao, Velcheru Narayana – Translator),
ISBN: 0691055912
Princeton University Press, New Jersey, 1990. First Edition
Hardcover (1/4 Cloth 3/4 Boards) Hardcover (1/4 Cloth 3/4 Boards). Very Good Condition/Good. First Edition. acknowledgements, list of abbreviations, Guide to pronunciation, introduction by the translator, summary of the text, notes, bibliography and index of names. At the beginning of the text there is a black-and-white photograph showing an image of Kannappa. 1/4 brown coloured cloth covered back strip with gilt coloured titles. 3/4 phase coloured boards. Black and white photographic dustwrapper with ochre coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. "Here is the first translation into English of the Basava Purana, a fascinating collection of tales that sums up and characterizes one of the most important and most radical religious groups of South India. The ideas of the Virasaivas, or militant Saivas, are represented in those tales by an intriguing mix of outrageous excess and traditional conservatism. Written in Telugu in the thirteenth century, the Basava Purana is an anthology of legends of Virasaivas saints and a hagiography of Basavesvara, the twelfth-century Virasaiva leader. This translation makes accessible a completely new perspective on this significant religious group. Although Telugu is one of the major cultural traditions of India, with a classical literature reaching back to the eleventh century, until now there has been no translation or exposition of any of the Telugu Virasaiva works in English. The introduction orients the reader to the text and helps in an understanding of the poet's point of view. The author of the Basava Purana, Palkuriki Somanatha, is revered as a saint by Virasaivas in Andhra and Karnataka. His books are regarded as sacred texts, and he is also considered to be a major poet in Telugu and Kannada." -- from the front fold over panel blurb. Rubbing to the back strip corners and book corners. Some age toning of the text block edges and there is a black remainder stripe to the lower text edge.
