Siva’s Warriors: The Basava Purana of Palkuriki Somanatha (Princeton Library of Asian Translations)
Somanatha, Palkuriki (Rao, Velcheru Narayana Translator),
ISBN: 0691055912
Princeton University Press, New Jersey, 1990. First Edition
Hardcover (1/4 Cloth 3/4 Boards) Hardcover (1/4 Cloth 3/4 Boards). Very Good Condition/Good. First Edition. acknowledgements, list of abbreviations, Guide to pronunciation, introduction by the translator, summary of the text, notes, bibliography and index of names. At the beginning of the text there is a black-and-white photograph showing an image of Kannappa. 1/4 brown coloured cloth covered back strip with gilt coloured titles. 3/4 phase coloured boards. Black and white photographic dustwrapper with ochre coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. "Here is the first translation into English of the Basava Purana, a fascinating collection of tales that sums up and characterizes one of the most important and most radical religious groups of South India. The ideas of the Virasaivas, or militant Saivas, are represented in those tales by an intriguing mix of outrageous excess and traditional conservatism. Written in Telugu in the thirteenth century, the Basava Purana is an anthology of legends of Virasaivas saints and a hagiography of Basavesvara, the twelfth-century Virasaiva leader. This translation makes accessible a completely new perspective on this significant religious group. Although Telugu is one of the major cultural traditions of India, with a classical literature reaching back to the eleventh century, until now there has been no translation or exposition of any of the Telugu Virasaiva works in English. The introduction orients the reader to the text and helps in an understanding of the poet's point of view. The author of the Basava Purana, Palkuriki Somanatha, is revered as a saint by Virasaivas in Andhra and Karnataka. His books are regarded as sacred texts, and he is also considered to be a major poet in Telugu and Kannada." -- from the front fold over panel blurb. Poog’s Pasture The Mythology Of A Child A Vista of Autobiography
Mackaye, Percy (1875-1956),

Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: photographic frontispiece. First Edition. Inscribed by Author. offset tanning of the front end papers, otherwise without damage apart from an inscription which can be viewed in the attached image. Percy MacKaye calls this elaborately embroidered tale "a vista of autobiography," but it is really a passionate tribute to his older brother, Will. Since he remembers Will is the one who gave wings to was imagination and an enduring sense of beauty, that is understandable Percy or Poog was 6 at the time of this tale, and Will was 8 years older. Will died in his early 20s, and Percy is now 76; and the memory of Will is a shining, other world mythology. From a book review by Hal Borland Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.
