One of the first, and most influential, of all lesbian novels, this is Radclyffe Hall's depiction of love between the two women in an era of suppression and prejudice. The book was first published in 1928, and was promptly banned, and then produced one of the most famous legal trials in British law, and history, on obscenity. Softening of the back strip edges with rubbing of the book corners and lower book edges. There is a slight cocking of the spine. Light age toning and scattered foxing to the text block edges and pages. Previous owners name to the free front end page and there is a small erasure mark to the top right-hand corner of the same page. Offset tanning to the end pages. Some flecking to the top edge of the book. The dustwrapper is in shaky shape – please see photograph. Chipping to the dustwrapper corners and back strip edges with a small piece missing from the top left-hand corner of the front panel and a large piece missing from the top right-hand corner of the review panel. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and either side of the back strip with sunning and stains present. The major damage to the dustwrapper has been various tears to the front panel and top edge of the back strip which a previous owner has supported with tape to the verso – tape still in situ.
