Harvest of the Cold Months
David, Elizabeth
Michael Joseph UK 1994
Hardcover At the time of her death in 1992 David was working on this epic study of the use of ice, the ice-trade and the early days of refrigeration, which was published posthumously in 1994 as Harvest of the Cold Months.‘An awe-inspiring feat of detective scholarship, the literally marvellous story of how human beings came to ingest lumps of flavoured frozen matter for pleasure' Independent on Sunday‘This survey of the use of ice in cookery takes us on a fascinating journey from 1581, where in Florence they put snow in the wine glasses, to that modern phenomenon, the growth of the ice-cream business. A scholarly social history, which makes a fitting finale to the work of the greatest of our writers on foods and its contexts.' Harpers & Queen - a water stain (maybe it was ice?? is on the top edge of the dj, otherwise it's a neat 413pp, just under a kilo packed for post.  Very Good/Good

Underneath a Harlem Moon: The Harlem to Paris Years of Adelaide Hall
Williams, Iain Cameron
Continuum UK 2002
Hardcover Williams takes the reader on a fascinating roller-coaster ride from Adelaide's birth in Brooklyn through her humble childhood in Harlem, from her triumphs on Broadway to the glamour of Paris's Moulin Rouge. Adelaide Hall is the missing link in Harlem's Renaissance, historically the richest period of American black culture. As its most important and influential female star, she dynamically pushed down the barriers that had previously prevented black entertainers from reaching mass recognition. Readers get a glimpse inside the most sophisticated and celebrated nightclubs in the world and follow Adelaide across two continents on a groundbreaking eighteen-month RKO tour. By the end of 1932, Adelaide had performed for millions and in the process had become one of America's wealthiest black women. Her exile to Paris in 1935 brought with it new challenges and rewards. By 1938, not content with being dubbed the Queen of Montmartre, she set her sights on conquering Britain. Underneath a Harlem Moon concludes with Adelaide's mysterious disappearance in November 1938, which has, until now, never been publicly explained. review>>>> Overall, a hugely enjoyable read made easy by Williams's approachable style of writing and keen interest towards the characters he portrays within the text. A must for all jazz and popular music buffs.  Excellent/Excellent

La France Gastronomique
Willan, Anne
Pavilion Books Limited UK 1991
Hardcover A collection of recipes from ten rural regions of France. This book offers an insight into French country cooking and eating, and shows how the French not only produce good food but also love to discuss it. The recipes featured range from the world famous to the little known. What is a cookbook? More than simply a collection of recipes, a cookbook can be a window to the larger world beyond the confines of the kitchen, as La Varenne Cooking School founder and award-winning cookbook author Anne Willan illustrates in this excellent book. review >>> It's one of those books that can be read back to front, or by random page-flipping, without much loss of charm. Old-fashioned farms, sleepy rivers, small shops, hill villages, wood-fired bakery ovens and lovingly tended gardens are the sort of things that stick in the mind, both from Willan's descriptions and Michael Boys' idyllic photographs. Famous restaurants, when they crop up, are mentioned with pleasure rather than awe, in no way eclipsing more modest experiences. . . .& (re) the choice of recipes. There are only about 100, modestly tucked away in 10 sections at the end of the individual chapters, but they convey a lot. The selection emphasizes obvious dishes and use of obvious regional ingredients rather than gee-whiz "discoveries" and "creations." 192 clean white pp in great shape for some culinary browsing at a bargain price. approx 1.5kg carded/bubbled for post. We have a few other of Willan's fine books.  Excellent/Very Good

Hardcover Harry Potter fans, Merlin advocates & maybe even Catweazle fans will go nuts for this gorgeous magic extravaganza review >>>Good read for fans of Merlin. The history/legend of how Merlin was born is accurate (though in the book they refer to his dad as a fairy rather than a demon, as the true legend goes) and the book does a great job of explaining the fact that learning magic is difficult.I was really impressed with the overall interactiveness of the book and the story of Merlin.   Very Good/None issued

Memories of Gascony
Koffmann, Pierre & Tim Shaw
Headline  1991
Softcover Don't want to break the bank with he hardcover? Here in paperback is the Glenfiddich Food Book of the Year, Koffmann's wonderful "Memories of Gascony" Here's our writeup from our hardback copy >>review - Having been lucky or mad enough to work with the Master, I just had to have his books. What was my surprise when I got sucked into Mr Koffmann's childhood memories of food and cooking. It s not only a brilliant cookbook, the stories are sometimes funny , sometimes moving. A real work of art. Love it. Thank you Monsieur Koffmann. Guardian review (well worth a google - In 1990, Koffmann wrote Memories of Gascony, reminiscences and recipes from the Oratoire accompanied by dewy photographs of the soft countryside. In it you will find his grandmother's recipe for walnut leaf aperitif (take 50 walnut leaves, 40g of orange peel, a litre of armagnac, a kilo of sugar and five litres of red wine; macerate for eight days, stirring twice a day; sieve, bottle, and store in a cool place for three months). It is both a sign of the excellence of its recipes, and of Koffmann's popularity, that a first edition of this volume, assuming you are able to track such a thing down, will now set you back up to £275. << Well ours isn't that much but it's worth that in enjoyment!  Very Good/None issued
