Documents on Australian Defence and Foreign Policy 1968-1975
Walsh & Munster (eds), J. R. & G. J.
Self published,  1980. First Edition
Hardcover (Original Cloth) Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. First Edition. An extremely rare book that has accumulated a little history of its own. Munster and Walsh braved the fury of the Australian Government, and following the book's publication, the Government issued an interim injunction to ban the book, citing both the Crimes act and the Copyright act. Copies of the first edition, of which this is one, were impounded and they even went as far as to also seize the print runs of newspapers that reproduced extracts. The Government seemed especially uncomfortable with certain details in the book, dealing with Australia's involvement with the Indonesian invasion of East Timor. An extremely important work. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust Jacket is in very good condition, without tears or chips or other damage. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Edges very slightly spotted or marked. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Notes of a Voyage from New South Wales to the North Coast of Australia, from the Journal of the Late Francis Napier.
Napier, Francis; Keddie, Mr. W. (notes).
[James R. Napier] [Glasgow] 1876
Hardback small (19.0 x 13.0 cm), no jacket as issued, very good condition, original blue cover (gilt vignette, border & spine lettering, little faded), black endpapers, full-page black & white plates, frontispiece portrait (tissue guard), errata page, maps (including foldouts at rear, creased at folds), minor foxing (mainly plates & maps & page edges), edges & pages faintly toned, bottom edge little bumped, some edgewear, two small bookshop stickers. 96 pp. (Estimated date, 1876, Trove catalogue.) In 1867 Francis Napier joined the South Australian Government expedition under Captain Francis Cadell to the north coast of the state (now the Northern Territory) searching for suitable sites for a capital and agricultural settlement. He examined the Liverpool River, went up the Roper River in a small steamer and visited Port Darwin, Anson Bay and the Victoria River. Cadell's report, published in the South Australian Parliamentary Papers for 1867, was criticised at the time. Thus, the Napier 'Notes' are the only public account of the expedition, and are an important document of the early contact and charting of the region. Compiled from the Napier journal by his family, and privately printed in Glasgow following his death in 1875. The plates, drawn with lithographic crayon, are by a brother of Napier, and are signed 'JMN'. (Ferguson 13058. Scarce. Small bookshop stickers: A. H. Spencer Hill of Content, Berkelouw Bookdealers. All five maps present: 1 internal page, and 4 as foldouts. All 8 lithographic plates present, as listed on contents page.).
