Softcover Softcover. As New/No Dust Jacket. First Edition. From the cover: "What was it really like to be a part of the British Empire, that large area uniformly coloured red on the map of the world? These stories, poems, and autobiographical essays by women from various countries of the Commonwealth retrace the common ground as well as uncover extensive areas of difference. Setting out as personal reflections they lead, through a remarkable play of perspectives and voices - witty, sardonic, subtle, astute, lyrical, to a general and persuasive idea of private lives shaped by larger and often contradictory forces of history and cultures." The Good Women Of China
Xinran,
ISBN: 0701173718
Chatto & Windus, Great Britain, 2002.
Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Good/. . 230 pages. Tanned pages. Creasing to covers. For seven years, Xinran Xue hosted a daily radio phone-in programme for Radio Nanjing during which she discussed women's lives, and invited women to call in and talk about themselves. Broadcast between 10 and 12 at night, Words on the Night Breeze soon became famous all over China for its powerful, honest discussions of what it means to be a woman in today's China. It started in 1990, a time when China seemed to be 'opening up', both for the Chinese and for the world. Xinran's programme revealed aspects of women's lives that had never been talked about in public before. She felt as if she was opening a tiny window into a huge fortress whose inhabitants had never before communicated with the outside world. Soon she was receiving over two hundred letters a day from women telling her their stories. She realised that she knew far less than she had thought about what it means to be a Chinese woman and embarked on a journey of discovery to collect their stories. The stories presented here tell of almost inconceivable suffering: rape, sexual abuse, the separation of parents from their children, the suppression of human emotion in order to survive the Communist regime - never before have the tortured souls of Chinese women been laid so bare. And yet this is also a book about love - about how, despite cruelty, despite politics, the female urge to nurture and cherish remains. And then there is Xinran herself: an extraordinary woman who, despite her own unhappy past, has given her life to saving the stories of Chinese women from oblivion. Quantity Available: 1. Daughters of Arabia
Sasson, Jean
ISBN: 0553816934
Bantam Books, USA, 1994. Reprint
Paperback Paperback. Good/. Reprint. 317 pages. Covers have light creasing. Spine has minor lean and moderate reading creases. Pages are lightly tanned. Following "Princess", dealing with women's lives behind the veil within the royal family of Saudi Arabia, this book now turns the spotlight on Princess Sultana's teenage daughters, Maha and Amani. Surrounded by great opulence and luxury from they day they were born, but stifled by the restrictive lifestyle imposed on them, they have reacted in desperate ways. Their stories, and those which concern other members of Princess Sultana's huge family, are set against a rich backcloth of Saudi Arabian culture and social mores, which the book depicts. It details, for example, the ritual of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, as the princess and her family journey to this holiest of cities. Throughout the book, however, she never tires of her quest to expose the injustices which her society levels against women. In her campaign to improve the lot of her own daughters, Princess Sultana strikes a chord amongst those women who are lucky enough to have the freedom to speak out for themselves. The author lived in Saudi Arabia for more than ten years and became, during that time, a friend and confidante of Princess Sultana. Quantity Available: 1. Basinger, Jeanine

Moderate water damage to text, covers unaffected. Basinger examines Hollywood's "women's films"- their individual stars and stories and the common threads that tie them together. The Whole Woman
Greer, Germaine
ISBN: 1862300577
Anchor, Great Britain, 1999.
Medium Trade Paperback Medium Trade Paperback. Good/. . 452 pages. Covers have light creasing. Edges of covers have superficial wear. Spine is uncreased. Page edges are lightly browned and slightly soiled. Germaine Greer proclaims that the time has come to get angry again! Modern feminism has become the victim of unenlightened complacency, and what started out in the Sixties as a movement for liberation has become one that has sought and settled for equality. With fiery rhetoric, authoritative insight, outrageous humour and broad-ranging debate, Greer shows that, although women have indeed come a very long way in the last thirty years, the notion of our 'having it all' has disguised the persistent discrimination and exploitation that continues to exist for women in the basic areas of health, sex, politics, economics and marketing. Erudite, eccentric, provocative and invigorating, Germaine Greer once again sets the agenda for the future of feminism as the millennium draws to a close. Here is all the polemical power that sold over a million copies of The Female Eunuch and kept its author at the heart of controversy ever since. The announcement in February 1998 that this book was coming was enough to send the world's media into a frenzied spin of speculation: The Whole Woman will be required reading for thinking adults everywhere. Life Lines : Australian Women’s Letters and Diaries 1788 to 1840
Clarke, Patricia & Spender, Dale
ISBN: 1863731245
Allen & Unwin, Australia, 1992. First Edition
Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Very Good/. First Edition. 261 pages. Covers have superficial rubbing/wear. Edges of covers have superficial wear. Spine is uncreased. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. Women did not always travel willingly to colonial Australia and whether they wanted to or not, they had to work. Isolated from family and friends and from all that was familiar, confronted with difficulties and dangers, life for them was often hard and painful. But there were always letters and journals to turn to. It is surprising just how many women were literate; no doubt the compelling need to write made a difference. It is also surprising just how much they wrote. Despite all the demands they had to meet, women made the time to write lengthy letters to those back home. they wrote to keep in touch, to place orders for goods they required, and to report on what was happening to them in their new land. Many of their narratives were adventure stories in which they were the stars, but if they wrote for others, they also wrote for themselves. In their letters and diaries these women reflected on their roles and the new identities they forged in their new environment. They even found that hard work could have its compensations. When so many women "back home" were not allowed to engage in meaningful work, their accounts show that many colonial women found a form of liberation in having their work needed and valued. The words of the women collected in "Lifelines" reveal some of the pressures and pains of the early years of white migration, and some of the joys of women's lives. This book is intended for students and reserchers in women's studies and Australian history. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Women & Feminism; ISBN: 1863731245. ISBN/EAN: 9781863731249. Anything She Can Do, I Can Do Better: The Truth About Female Competition
Rachael Oakes-Ash,
ISBN: 1740511182
Random House, Australia, 2003.
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. . 'A man would stab you in the chest, a woman would stab you in the back.' Karen Moline, Belladonna The truth about female competition! Have you coveted, envied, admired another woman's hair, shoes, bag, job, husband, figure or weight this morning? Have you ever breathed a sigh of relief when your ex's new girlfriend turns out to be fatter, uglier or poorer than you? Thought Anything She Can Do I Can Do Better? Chances are, if you're a woman who engages in society (read, leaves the house), you're competitive - not that you'll admit it. Female competition is a taboo topic. It's covert, rarely spoken about in public, but it exists. We owe it to the future generations of women to encourage the way we compete with each other to be a positive experience in the game of life. This means acknowledging our competitive thoughts, not judging them. Speaking openly, looking at what triggers our own competitiveness, discovering why we compete in some situations and not in others and then working with what we know. 263 pages. Fire With Fire: The New Female Power and How It Will Change the 21st Century
Naomi Wolf,
ISBN: 0099329611
Vintage, Great Britain, 1994.
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. . n her bestselling book The Beauty Myth, Naomi Wolf sought to change the way in which women see themselves in relation to their bodies. Now she focuses on how they see themselves in relation to power. She argues that the feminist movement has to change if it is to speak to a new generation of women, and that, even as women are gaining more ground than ever before, a wariness of feminist orthodoxies keeps them away from the only movement capable of putting political clout behind their personal success. The book represents a call to women to throw off centuries of conditioning about the relationship between power and femininity. 378 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. HarperCollins, Great Britain, 1994.
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. . Drawing on her own and other women's lives, Nancy Friday shows that to a woman's character the key lies in her relationship with her mother - that first binding relationship which becomes the model for so much of a woman's adult relationships with men, and whose fetters constrain her sexuality, independence, and very selfhood. Friday believes that on the deepest level women will always be their mother's daughters, and that only when they recognize and understand this will they be able to find their own strength and direct their own lives. 458 pages. Speaking Out: A 21st Century Handbook for Women & Girls
Tara Moss,
ISBN: 9781460751336
HarperCollins, Australia, 2016.
Hardcover (Printed Boards) Hardcover (Printed Boards). Near Fine Condition/. . A short, accessible and practical handbook for women on speaking out safely and confidently. Worldwide, less than one out of every four people we hear from or about in the media is female and men outnumber women in parliament by more than three to one. If half of humanity's experiences, perspectives and possible solutions to world problems are under-represented, or entirely unheard, all of us lose out. Tara Moss has spent 20 years in the public sphere and has had to face down nerves, critics and backlash. She has become a leader in speaking out. In this handbook she offers advice on preparation, speaking out and negotiating public spaces. With a special focus on public speaking, social media and online safety, she offers tips on how to research, form arguments, find support and handle criticism. This is a guide for women young and old that not only helps them find their voice, but argues passionately for why it matters. 285 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Anything She Can Do I Can Do Better
Rachael Oakes-Ash,
ISBN: 1740511182
Random House, Australia, 2003.
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. . A man would stab you in the chest, a woman would stab you in the back.' Karen Moline, Belladonna The truth about female competition! Rachael Oakes-Ash interviewed prominent women including formidable US gossip columnist Liz Smith, Anita Roddick, Julie Burchill, Senator Natasha Stott Despoja 263 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Gender Trouble: Feminism & Subversion Of Identity
Butler, Judith,
ISBN: 0415389550
Routledge, London, 2007. reprint
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. reprint. second-hand copy, still feels as if it has not been opened, and without annotations. The author argues that traditional feminism is wrong to look to a natural "essential" notion of the female, or indeed of sex or gender. She starts by questioning the category "woman": who does include, and who decides who it includes? Best known however, yet also most often misinterpreted, is Butler's concept of gender as a reiterated social performance rather than the expression of a prior reality. – Paraphrasing the rear panel blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Story of An African Farm
Schreiner, Olive,
Collins, London & Glasgow, No date. Edition Unstated
Softcover (Stiff Boards) Softcover (Stiff Boards). Very Good Condition/Slipcase. Illustrator: Robb. Edition Unstated. preface by author, glossary and introduction by S. C. Green coloured textured cloth covered stiffened boards with gilt illustration in titles to the back strip. Green coloured tint to the top text block edge. There is a green coloured faux silk which is quite faded and the end is frayed. Plain textured slipcase – coloured gray. Set in South Africa in the middle part of the 19th century, the novel deals with three characters – Waldo, Em and Lyndall – living on the same farm, first as children and then as adults. Age toning of the text block edges and pages. Page 291 /292 has become crumpled. Gift inscription to the top right-hand corner of the free front end page. Some browning of the end pages.
