The Story of An African Farm
Schreiner, Olive,
Collins, London & Glasgow, No date. Edition Unstated
Softcover (Stiff Boards) Softcover (Stiff Boards). Very Good Condition/Slipcase. Illustrator: Robb. Edition Unstated. preface by author, glossary and introduction by S. C. Cronwright-Schreiner (author's husband). Pale gray coloured end pages. Illustrated frontispiece and the drawings within the text have all been done by the artist 'Robb'. Green coloured textured cloth covered stiffened boards with gilt illustration in titles to the back strip. Green coloured tint to the top text block edge. There is a green coloured faux silk which is quite faded and the end is frayed. Plain textured slipcase – coloured gray. First published in 1883 under the pseudonym of Ralph Iorn, the book caused consternation and controversy in Victrian times, as it portrays, in a frank manner, free thought, transvestism, feminism, premarital sex and pregnancy out of wedlock. Set in South Africa in the middle part of the 19th century, the novel deals with three characters – Waldo, Em and Lyndall – living on the same farm, first as children and then as adults. The book is not narrative in style, but is used as a forum for the author's beliefs and philosophy. Rubbing of the book corners and of the back strip edges. Age toning of the text block edges and pages. Page 291 /292 has become crumpled. Gift inscription to the top right-hand corner of the free front end page. Some browning of the end pages. Rubbing and some shipping of all corners of the back strip and there is some signing also present. There is a stain to the lower left-hand corner of the rear panel and there are a couple of small splits to the edges. Size: 12mo (standard paperback). [4], V - XVI, 304 pages,. During Mother’s Absence
Roberts, Michele,
ISBN: 185381797X
Virago, London, 1994. Reprint
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. Reprint. Subversive, sensual tales, wise and witty fictions; this collection of short stories from one of Britain's most acclaimed novelists is by turns shockingly delicious and soberingly disquieting. When mother is away taboos are breached, the untouchables embraced and the forbidden tasted. In 'Laundry' a poor, plain girl takes devilish pleasure in outwitting the pious monks and nuns she washes for. In the haunting, powerful fable 'Anger' a young woman, branded by fire at birth by her mother is scarred- and blessed- for life. In the highly sensuous 'Taking it Easy' a mother with writers block finds an escape from the slavery of her twin enemies by turning them into food for thought. And in the beautiful, arresting 'God's House' a young girl faces the ultimate mother's absence. – rear panel blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 192 pages. Black-and-white illustrated card covers with the black titles. Creasing to the book corners and rubbing to the book panels. There has been a dog-earing of the top right-hand corner of the internal pages to the majority of the book. Light age toning to the textblock edges and internal text. Staining to the top left-hand corner of the front panel, top right-hand corner of the rear panel and the full width of the top textblock edge. Handling marks to the book panels. This small book of poems is a "pirate" copy of the author's first book of poems. It is somewhat controversial. For as the introduction states; it includes the poem "Arraignment", which accuses Ted Hughes of murdering his wife Sylvia Plath, which then had Ted Hughes suing Robin Morgan. Through a series of meetings a "compromise" was reached where Robin Morgan rewrote the poem in much more general terms, and was known as "Arraignment II". At the time of this book's publication (probably 1970s though no date is given) the only way to get Robin Morgan's poems was within this pirated format. Included in this small book of poems are the two versions of the controversial poem. Size: 16mo (very small). (6), 3-85, (1) pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). In this sequel to her much praised autobiography Forgetting's No Exuse, Mary Stott, whose life spans almost the century, reflects on growing older and the dramatic changes she has witnessed. As a lifelong feminist, she has a fascinating perspective on the modern women's movement, and the contribution which women of her generation have made to it. As a mother and grandmother, she writes movingly of the changes she has seen in family life, in relationships between men and women, and women and women, and in attitudes to the elderly. The book approaches this task 2 levels: an argument about the theory of the state and the social analysis of gender; and a set of case studies – childcare, equal employment opportunities, sexual violence – on the interplay between feminism and State structure in Australia during the last 15 years. In drawing on the experiences of feminist demands on the state, the book reveals how the State is constituted by gender relations and soap by the vicissitudes of sexual politics. – Rear panel blurb Size: Trade Paperback. Dangaroo Press,  1993. First Edition
Softcover Softcover. As New/No Dust Jacket. First Edition. From the cover: "What was it really like to be a part of the British Empire, that large area uniformly coloured red on the map of the world? These stories, poems, and autobiographical essays by women from various countries of the Commonwealth retrace the common ground as well as uncover extensive areas of difference. Setting out as personal reflections they lead, through a remarkable play of perspectives and voices - witty, sardonic, subtle, astute, lyrical, to a general and persuasive idea of private lives shaped by larger and often contradictory forces of history and cultures." The Good Women Of China
Xinran,
ISBN: 0701173718
Chatto & Windus, Great Britain, 2002.
Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Good/. . 230 pages. Tanned pages. Creasing to covers. For seven years, Xinran Xue hosted a daily radio phone-in programme for Radio Nanjing during which she discussed women's lives, and invited women to call in and talk about themselves. Broadcast between 10 and 12 at night, Words on the Night Breeze soon became famous all over China for its powerful, honest discussions of what it means to be a woman in today's China. It started in 1990, a time when China seemed to be 'opening up', both for the Chinese and for the world. Xinran's programme revealed aspects of women's lives that had never been talked about in public before. She felt as if she was opening a tiny window into a huge fortress whose inhabitants had never before communicated with the outside world. Soon she was receiving over two hundred letters a day from women telling her their stories. She realised that she knew far less than she had thought about what it means to be a Chinese woman and embarked on a journey of discovery to collect their stories. The stories presented here tell of almost inconceivable suffering: rape, sexual abuse, the separation of parents from their children, the suppression of human emotion in order to survive the Communist regime - never before have the tortured souls of Chinese women been laid so bare. And yet this is also a book about love - about how, despite cruelty, despite politics, the female urge to nurture and cherish remains. And then there is Xinran herself: an extraordinary woman who, despite her own unhappy past, has given her life to saving the stories of Chinese women from oblivion. Quantity Available: 1. Bantam Books, Australia, 2002.
Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Good/. . 215 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Minor edgewear and creasing to covers. Remainder mark on page edges. When "Marie Claire Magazine" decided to explore the burning issues facing Australian women today, they were inundated with thousands of readers who wanted to attend the "What Women Want" forum on the issue. A sell-out crowd heard Wendy Harmer, Natasha Stott Despoja, Julie McCrossin, Tracey Curro and Belinda Emmett speak on the issues that matter most to them. While most of the speeches were funny, each featured poignant storytelling. While Belinda Emmett had everyone in tears as she recounted her battle with cancer, Wendy Harmer had them laughing and crying over her childhood stories and her plea for women to see their own inner beauty. "What Women Want" features the heartfelt desires of the 10 women who spoke at the forums plus inspiring stories by 10 other great women of substance including Helen Barnacle, bestselling author of "Don't Let Her See Me Cry", Phoebe Fraser, daughter of former Prime Minister, Malcolm, and radio broadcaster Sally Loane. If you want to know what women want at the beginning of the new millennium, "What Women Want" will tell you. If you want a good laugh - or a good cry - it will do that too. Quantity Available: 1. Daughters of Arabia
Sasson, Jean
ISBN: 0553816934
Bantam Books, USA, 1994. Reprint
Paperback Paperback. Good/. Reprint. 317 pages. Covers have light creasing. Spine has minor lean and moderate reading creases. Pages are lightly tanned. Following "Princess", dealing with women's lives behind the veil within the royal family of Saudi Arabia, this book now turns the spotlight on Princess Sultana's teenage daughters, Maha and Amani. Surrounded by great opulence and luxury from they day they were born, but stifled by the restrictive lifestyle imposed on them, they have reacted in desperate ways. Their stories, and those which concern other members of Princess Sultana's huge family, are set against a rich backcloth of Saudi Arabian culture and social mores, which the book depicts. It details, for example, the ritual of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, as the princess and her family journey to this holiest of cities. Throughout the book, however, she never tires of her quest to expose the injustices which her society levels against women. In her campaign to improve the lot of her own daughters, Princess Sultana strikes a chord amongst those women who are lucky enough to have the freedom to speak out for themselves. The author lived in Saudi Arabia for more than ten years and became, during that time, a friend and confidante of Princess Sultana. Quantity Available: 1. The Whole Woman
Greer, Germaine
ISBN: 1862300577
Anchor, Great Britain, 1999.
Medium Trade Paperback Medium Trade Paperback. Good/. . 452 pages. Covers have light creasing. Edges of covers have superficial wear. Spine is uncreased. Page edges are lightly browned and slightly soiled. Germaine Greer proclaims that the time has come to get angry again! Modern feminism has become the victim of unenlightened complacency, and what started out in the Sixties as a movement for liberation has become one that has sought and settled for equality. With fiery rhetoric, authoritative insight, outrageous humour and broad-ranging debate, Greer shows that, although women have indeed come a very long way in the last thirty years, the notion of our 'having it all' has disguised the persistent discrimination and exploitation that continues to exist for women in the basic areas of health, sex, politics, economics and marketing. Erudite, eccentric, provocative and invigorating, Germaine Greer once again sets the agenda for the future of feminism as the millennium draws to a close. Here is all the polemical power that sold over a million copies of The Female Eunuch and kept its author at the heart of controversy ever since. The announcement in February 1998 that this book was coming was enough to send the world's media into a frenzied spin of speculation: The Whole Woman will be required reading for thinking adults everywhere.
