"For it is our modern experience that men filled with every appreciation of sex and women's rights encounter women with an equal appreciation,, and the war still continues with what new permutations only a novelist can begin to explore since the novelist is the only philosopher who works with emotions which at the very edge of the word system, and so is out beyond the scientists, doctors, psychologists, even -- if he is good enough -- the best of his contemporaries who work in philosophy itself." The Memoirs of Gluckel of Hameln
Gluckel of Hameln [ Translated by Marvin Lowenthal ],
ISBN: 0805205721
Schocken Books, New York, 1977. Reprint
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Reprint. XXVIII, 298 pages, introduction by Robert S. Rosen and notes throughout the book by translator. The text is illustrated with a few contemporary black-and-white illustrations. Faint age toning of the text block edges. Small creased at the bottom right-hand corner of the front panel. No other damage to describe. " Begun in 1690, the story of a forty-four-year-old German Jewish widow, mother of 14 children, tells how she guided the financial and personal destinies of her children, how she engaged in trade, ran her own factory, and promoted the welfare of her large family. Her memoir, a bare account of an ordinary woman, enlightened not just her children, for whom she wrote it, but all prosperity about her life and community. Gluckel speaks to us with determination and humour from the 17th century. She tells of war, plague, pirates, soldiers, the hysteria of the false messiah Sabbtai Zevi, murder, bankrupt, wedding feasts, births deaths, in fact, of all human events that befell her during her lifetime. She writes in a matter-of-fact way of the frightening and precarious situation under which the Jews of northern Germany lived. Accepting this situation is given, she boldly and fearlessly promotes her business, her family and her faith." -- from the rear panel blurb. . Size: Large Format Paperback. When it comes to the work/life balance, modern women continually find themselves in a no-win situation where they are criticized regardless of the path they choose. The F Word: How We Learned to Swear By Feminism argues that the pervasive idea that women will never be able to effectively combine work or interests outside the home with marriage, a social life and parenting is a furphy. In their lively and topical new book, Caro and Fox combine both personal experience and the stories of a range of women with the big picture, and provide practical suggestions for forgiving ourselves, having fun and not giving up while holding it all together. Shambhala, USA, 1997.
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. . A tender and funny exploration of the sacred dimension of motherhood. Maren Hansen's book explores this inner experience of motherhood as a timeless and universal expression of feminine spirituality. Drawing on the experience of her own three pregnancies in chapters like "Raging Hormones" and "The Venus of Willendorf and Me," she takes the reader on an amusing but thought-provoking tour through morning sickness, amniocentesis, preparing a nest, birth, postpartum depression, nursing, and working outside the home. Anything She Can Do, I Can Do Better: The Truth About Female Competition
Rachael Oakes-Ash,
ISBN: 1740511182
Random House, Australia, 2003.
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. . 'A man would stab you in the chest, a woman would stab you in the back.' Karen Moline, Belladonna The truth about female competition! Have you coveted, envied, admired another woman's hair, shoes, bag, job, husband, figure or weight this morning? Have you ever breathed a sigh of relief when your ex's new girlfriend turns out to be fatter, uglier or poorer than you? Thought Anything She Can Do I Can Do Better? Chances are, if you're a woman who engages in society (read, leaves the house), you're competitive - not that you'll admit it. Female competition is a taboo topic. It's covert, rarely spoken about in public, but it exists. We owe it to the future generations of women to encourage the way we compete with each other to be a positive experience in the game of life. This means acknowledging our competitive thoughts, not judging them. Speaking openly, looking at what triggers our own competitiveness, discovering why we compete in some situations and not in others and then working with what we know. 263 pages. Fire With Fire: The New Female Power and How It Will Change the 21st Century
Naomi Wolf,
ISBN: 0099329611
Vintage, Great Britain, 1994.
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. . n her bestselling book The Beauty Myth, Naomi Wolf sought to change the way in which women see themselves in relation to their bodies. Now she focuses on how they see themselves in relation to power. She argues that the feminist movement has to change if it is to speak to a new generation of women, and that, even as women are gaining more ground than ever before, a wariness of feminist orthodoxies keeps them away from the only movement capable of putting political clout behind their personal success. The book represents a call to women to throw off centuries of conditioning about the relationship between power and femininity. 378 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Random House, Australia, 2003.
Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. . A man would stab you in the chest, a woman would stab you in the back.' Karen Moline, Belladonna The truth about female competition!
