The Story of An African Farm
Schreiner, Olive,
Collins, London & Glasgow, No date. Edition Unstated
Softcover (Stiff Boards) Softcover (Stiff Boards). Very Good Condition/Slipcase. Illustrator: Robb. Edition Unstated. preface by author, glossary and introduction by S. C. Cronwright-Schreiner (author's husband). Pale gray coloured end pages. Illustrated frontispiece and the drawings within the text have all been done by the artist 'Robb'. Green coloured textured cloth covered stiffened boards with gilt illustration in titles to the back strip. Green coloured tint to the top text block edge. There is a green coloured faux silk which is quite faded and the end is frayed. Plain textured slipcase – coloured gray. First published in 1883 under the pseudonym of Ralph Iorn, the book caused consternation and controversy in Victrian times, as it portrays, in a frank manner, free thought, transvestism, feminism, premarital sex and pregnancy out of wedlock. Set in South Africa in the middle part of the 19th century, the novel deals with three characters – Waldo, Em and Lyndall – living on the same farm, first as children and then as adults. The book is not narrative in style, but is used as a forum for the author's beliefs and philosophy. Rubbing of the book corners and of the back strip edges. Age toning of the text block edges and pages. Page 291 /292 has become crumpled. Gift inscription to the top right-hand corner of the free front end page. Some browning of the end pages. Rubbing and some shipping of all corners of the back strip and there is some signing also present. There is a stain to the lower left-hand corner of the rear panel and there are a couple of small splits to the edges. Size: 12mo (standard paperback). [4], V - XVI, 304 pages,. During Mother’s Absence
Roberts, Michele,
ISBN: 185381797X
Virago, London, 1994. Reprint
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. Reprint. Subversive, sensual tales, wise and witty fictions; this collection of short stories from one of Britain's most acclaimed novelists is by turns shockingly delicious and soberingly disquieting. When mother is away taboos are breached, the untouchables embraced and the forbidden tasted. In 'Laundry' a poor, plain girl takes devilish pleasure in outwitting the pious monks and nuns she washes for. In the haunting, powerful fable 'Anger' a young woman, branded by fire at birth by her mother is scarred- and blessed- for life. In the highly sensuous 'Taking it Easy' a mother with writers block finds an escape from the slavery of her twin enemies by turning them into food for thought. Black-and-white illustrated card covers with the black titles. Creasing to the book corners and rubbing to the book panels. There has been a dog-earing of the top right-hand corner of the internal pages to the majority of the book. Light age toning to the textblock edges and internal text. Staining to the top left-hand corner of the front panel, top right-hand corner of the rear panel and the full width of the top textblock edge. Handling marks to the book panels. This small book of poems is a "pirate" copy of the author's first book of poems. It is somewhat controversial. For as the introduction states; it includes the poem "Arraignment", which accuses Ted Hughes of murdering his wife Sylvia Plath, which then had Ted Hughes suing Robin Morgan. Through a series of meetings a "compromise" was reached where Robin Morgan rewrote the poem in much more general terms, and was known as "Arraignment II". At the time of this book's publication (probably 1970s though no date is given) the only way to get Robin Morgan's poems was within this pirated format. Included in this small book of poems are the two versions of the controversial poem. Size: 16mo (very small). (6), 3-85, (1) pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Staking a Claim; Feminism, Bureaucracy, and the State
Franzway, Suzanne & Court, Dianne & Connell, R. W.,
ISBN: 0043522394
Allen & Unwin, Sydney, 1989. First Edition
softcover softcover. Very Good Condition/. First Edition. the book aims to bring feminist experience and social theory together to produce a systematic view of the state as an agent in sexual politics, thereby placing in question the nature of the State itself. The book approaches this task 2 levels: an argument about the theory of the state and the social analysis of gender; and a set of case studies – childcare, equal employment opportunities, sexual violence – on the interplay between feminism and State structure in Australia during the last 15 years. In drawing on the experiences of feminist demands on the state, the book reveals how the State is constituted by gender relations and soap by the vicissitudes of sexual politics. – Rear panel blurb Size: Trade Paperback.
