As he prepares for battle once more, Hervey finds himself confronting ghosts from his past. . . reviews >>> Fantastic continuing story of Matthew Hervey. Queed
Harrison, Henry Sydnor
Houghton Mifflin USA 1911 3rd Impression
Hardcover Queed tells the story of an idealist who must revisit his opinions when he goes to work on a newspaper. Harrison's other novels include VV's Eyes (1913), Angela's Business (1915), and Andrew Bride of Paris (1925). reader comment >> He's often referred to as a social critic, but the plain fact is that he was a delightful storyteller: the reason this novel, "Queed," was so well received is that it's a joy to read. . . .& this very affirmative review "The novel has a fantastic cast of well developed characters, including one of the oddest heroes you'll ever meet. The wry language of the author is a treat throughout the novel as he goes off on various interesting tangents about journalism, social causes, and the post-war South. I had no idea what the book was about when I picked it up and I could barely put it down once I did." Certainly seems a great adition to your shelves.  Very Good-good/No Jacket

Blonde A Novel
Oates Joyce Carol
Fourth Estate UK 2000 First Edition
Hard Cover In her most ambitious work to date, Joyce Carol Oates boldly reimagines the inner, poetic, and spiritual life of Norma Jeane Baker -- the child, the woman, the fated celebrity and idolized blonde the world came to know as Marilyn Monroe. In a voice startlingly intimate and rich, Norma Jeane tells her own story of an emblematic American artist -- intensely conflicted and driven -- who had lost her way. A powerful portrait of Hollywood's myth and an extraordinary woman's heartbreaking reality, Blonde is a sweeping epic that pays tribute to the elusive magic and devastation behind the creation of the great twentieth-century American star. 738 pp, 1.4 kg to post - Faults? taped tear to lower dj spine.   Very Good/good/Fair

Island in the Sky
Gann, Ernest
Hodder & Stoughton  1955
Hardcover Island in the Sky was the first book to be written about the Army Air Transport Command during WWII. It is also the first book of Ernest Gann's to be made into a motion picture that starred John Wayne. Island in the Sky is not a war story, but based on a true incident that happened in the frozen lands of Northern Canada. It is a tale of survival and comradeship. review >>> Gann was a left-seat man and he was able to tranfer his need for perfection to the printed page. A veteran pilot will find no flaws or mistakes or stupid exaggerations in the technical descriptions in this book. Ernie Gann will put you in the left seat and make you sweat. He will give you the sense and the thrill of flying a four-engine transport under dubious conditions in 1944. 193pp less than 500g for post - faults? dj wear (see pic please)  Good/Good/Fair

Pieces of eight:being the authentic narrative of a treasure discovered in the Bahama Islands, in the year 1903--now first given to the public by Richard Le Gallienne
Le Gallienne, Richard
The Children's Press UK
Hardcover Richard Thomas Le Gallienne (1866-1947) was an English man of letters, very much associated with the literary world of London in the 1890s. First published in 1918, Pieces of Eight is a work of fiction that purports to be "the authentic narrative of a treasure discovered in the Bahama Islands in 1903." According to one early reviewer, it is "A polite treasure hunt which, compared to R L Stevenson's handling of the same plot lacks the thrills of real buccaneering, but which is romantic and beautifully descriptive of the tropic Bahamas." 256 crisp pp, gift inscription 1st p, unclipped dj  Very Good/Good

Narziss and Goldmund
Hesse, Herman
Penguin  1973
Paperback 301pp review >>> Having read all of Hesse works, I find them all fascinating and profound, but none more so than Narcissus and Goldmund. This masterpiece explores the balance between living for yourself and living for others. These two characters and how they relate and understand the other is just beyond words. I first read this book in High School and over the next 20 years have re-read it many times. It never grows old as it invokes our innermost desires and failures. Do miss out on this great read. overview Goldmund is obviously the possible, and Narziss the actual. Protagonist and intime are yet another variation of Hesse's customary double self-projection: Goldmund is the ingratiat-ing artist-voluptuary he would have liked to be, and Narziss is the re-tiring thinker-ascetic he knew himself to be. Contrary to the implications of the title, the novel is not a balanced recounting of the lives of two protagonists, nor was it ever intended to be. From its inception, the story was to be Goldmund's. A would-be monk & a monk for sure, one turns out to travel life's pleasurable roads, one sticks to his vocation.  Good/None issued

Duckworth UK 1996
Hardcover 224 perfect white pp hold the plot of this novel & if after reading you're inclined to a more detailed look at the ship herself we have several books along those lines & even a "Titanic Lifeboat Crew" t-shirt! review >>> This was simply brilliant. The writing was so powerful I had tears in my eys at the end. I thought the plot was very clever. Frequently (but not too frequently) it foreshadowed the end, but in a subtle and poignant way. The characters were also very well described, but I think it was the way that she structured the plot that really made this stand out for me.   Excellent/Very Good

Devil’s Gate
Cussler, Clive & Brown, Graham
Michael Joseph Penguin  2011
Hardcover Plot >>> A Japanese cargo ship cruises the eastern Atlantic near the Azores- when it bursts into flames. A gang of pirates speeds to take advantage of the disaster-when their boat explodes. What is happening in this part of the world? As Kurt Austin, Joe Zavala, and the rest of the NUMA Special Assignments Team rush to investigate, they find themselves drawn into the extraordinary ambitions of an African dictator, the creation of a weapon of almost mythical power, and an unimaginably audacious plan to extort the world's major nations. The penalty for refusal? The destruction of their greatest cities. Filled with the high-stakes suspense and boundless invention unique to Cussler, Devil's Gate is one of the most thrilling novels yet from the grand master of adventure. review >>> "Devil's Gate" begins with the requisite prologue, set on the tarmac in Santa Maria, the Azores in 1951..a mysterious Russian passenger and his luggage are being spirited to the U.S. by an American pilot named Hudson. The passenger is shot before he can reboard the plane and is left for dead. Hudson is also hit and the "Connie" he's flying goes down in the Atlantic. If you are familiar with the Cussler template, you know this incident will eventually intrude on present-day events. If you're a high-adventure enthusiast, give Cussler and Brown a nod. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with this new-look addition to the NUMA Files. Book is in great shape 474pp & 800g packed for post  Very Good/Very Good

Is Paris Burning?
Collins, Larry & Lapierre, Dominique
Penguin  1966 1st Thus
Paperback 409pp with bw photo section amidships. Dominique LaPierre Hitler's death sentence to the city of Paris in 1944 nearly happened. An extraordinary series of events, fastidiously researched here, saved the city from what Hitler wanted to leave to the Allies "nothing but a field of ruins." reviews >> A very interesting and informative history covering the two weeks during which Paris was liberated in August, 1944. The author includes numerous personal and very moving anecdotes from the survivors within a narrative filled with military and political events as related by the main actors. A real tear-jerker at times. and >> Insanely well-researched play-by-play account of Paris' liberation from the 3rd Reich. The story is suspenseful and gripping. Sometimes the details became burdensome, but not enough to prevent a solid endorsement. I had no idea how close Paris was to destruction.   /None issued

Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze
Lewis, Elizabeth Foreman
George Harrap & Co Australia 1939 1st Australian Edition
Hardcover This book is the story of a thirteen year old boy from the farms of central China who, with his widowed mother, moves to the big city, Chungking (now spelled Chongqing). Because life on the farm is so uncertain, and, in fact, rather dangerous because of banditry, Fu will be apprenticed to Tang, a master coppersmith. The book portrays a turbulent time, after the fall of Imperial government, and before a new order could arise, a time of war and disunity. This book won the 1933 Newbery Medal for best contribution to American children's literature. review > Great book with huge insight into Chinese thinking and culture. Full of adventure and drama, with a rich cultural background. Very educational, with a focus on character issues! Company for Henry
Wodehouse P.G.
Herbert Jenkins UK 1967 1st
Hardcover Company For Henry is a novel by P. G. Wodehouse, first published in the United States on May 12, 1967 by Simon & Schuster, Inc., New York, under the title The Purloined Paperweight, and in the United Kingdom on October 26, 1967 by Herbert Jenkins, London. Not featuring any of Wodehouse's wide cast of regular characters, Company for Henry is nevertheless a typically Wodehousean tale of romance and intrigue among impoverished aristocrats, former musical stars and American millionaires, set at a country house. Lovey Mary
Rice, Lice Hegan
Hodder & Stoughton UK 1934
Hardcover This book has been reprinted an amazing number of times since first run in 1903. 191 pp The story begins. Everything about Lovey Mary was a contradiction, from her hands and feet, which seemed to have been meant for a big girl, to her high ideals and aspirations, that ought to have belonged to an amiable one. The heroine of the story takes off from an institution & takes a little one with her review > I would give this book 10 stars if I possibly could! It is a wonderful book...It follows the life of Lovey Mary, a young woman who claims "it ain`t hard to be good when folks love you." She lives at "the home", where a young boy, Tommy, is entrusted to her care. When she finds out that Tommy`s "wicked" mother is coming to claim him, taking him away from Mary, she is quick to take action. I won`t spoil anything, but it is truely a delighful, humorous read. Gone to Earth
Webb, Mary
Penguin UK 1985
Papeback A very clean copy of this facsimile edition issued as part of a boxed commemorative set of Penguins with 284 nicely presented pp & covers. "Gone to Earth" is the story of a free-spirited country lass, who is loved both by the wicked squire and the altruistic minister. Gone To Earth - Written in 1917, when all three of Mary Webb’s younger brothers were serving in the trenches of the Western Front, Gone to Earth denounces the callous inhumanity of “civilized” man. Webb’s second novel is a work of high imagination that reflects her horror at the slaughter of young soldiers, yet she never mentions the war that was devastating Europe at the time. Webb clothes her message in the setting and characters she knows best, Shropshire, and translates her anguish and compassion into poetic images. The title of the book is taken from the hunter’s cry, Gone to Earth! when the fox has fled into its underground den. Webb cries out through this allegorical story: why do men, seeing something innocent and beautiful, seek to destroy it? In 1917 Rebecca West proclaimed Gone to Earth as Novel of the Year. Pink Sugar
Douglas, O
Hodder & Stoughton London 1934 Twentieth Edition
Hardcover Hugely popular title by O. Douglas, the pen name of Anna Masterton Buchan (1877–1948), a Scottish novelist review - Kirsty's stepmother has finally died, leaving Kirsty with money and the freedom to do what she pleases for the first time in her life. What she chooses is a small house in Scotland, where she lives with her maiden aunt, has spirited arguments with her upper-class landlord, and eventually takes in three children who need a temporary home while their father recovers from grief at their mother's death. Kirsty is another one of Buchan's witty heroines, but she's also unabashedly sentimental; the "pink sugar" of the title comes from her telling off her landlord when he suggests that she's a weak person because she prefers the nicer side of life. I really liked Kirsty's combination of strength and sweetness, and I felt the novel did a good job of showing her growth from a somewhat self-absorbed person to someone who can recognise what's best for others, and see proffered romantic love when it comes from an unanticipated corner. Last Year When I Was Young
Dickens, Monica
Heinemann  1974 1st
Hardcover Book's in great order. review/plot Dick Hayes is a young nurse who works with private patients - giving the author scope for a portmanteau novel. But this is much more than that. Dick is a gentle, perceptive character who falls for a girl who's having an affair with her married boss, a radio producer. Fanny is always looking for interesting characters to interview (another gift for the novelist as her ambition takes her and Dick to some strange households indwelt by mediums, poltergeists and genteel wife-swappers). Gradually you realise that Fanny's boss is stringing her along and she'll never be any more than a secretary. Even when she's shed the boyfriend, she keeps telling Dick that she wants her "independence". A lovely book, full of Dickens' trademark social observation and wit. Another gift for the novelist - Dick is the narrator and we only see what he sees. Also he talks like a nurse, rather than a "writer". He has a good idea for people's idiosyncrasies, like the woman at the agency who rrrrrolls her rrrrrs and calls him "Hditchahd!". Sadly we never meet her! Does the story end happily?   Very Good/Very Good

Hardcover goodreads info -Born in 1897, in All Saints' Vicarage in Froxfield, Wiltshire, Constance Winifred Savery was the daughter of the Rev. John Manly Savery, and his wife, Constance Eleanor Harbord Savery. The family moved to Birmingham when she was nine years old, and Savery was educated there, at King Edward VI High School for Girls. She went on to Somerville College, Oxford, where she studied English, and was in the first cohort of woman students to be granted degrees, in 1920. She earned a Post-Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education from Birmingham University, and M.A. from Oxford in 1927, and taught briefly (and unhappily), before her mother's death necessitated a return to her father's household in Middleton-cum-Fordley, Suffolk, where she helped him with the parish work. Savery never returned to teaching, earning her living from then on by writing. She published close to fifty books, and numerous short stories and articles, all informed by her deep Christian (Anglican) faith. The Triple Point of Water
Dunscombe, Fiona
Polygon UK 2007
Papeback Gritty, dark & full of life - Pulp Net review -In this confidently written first novel, London in the 1980s is conjured up with clarity through the viewpoint of Arabella, who leaves school and rural Nottingham as soon as she can for the city. Arabella tries her hand at various low-paid jobs, but what she does best is dancing. Her audition and subsequent career as a strippagram singer make sense in the context of a proper job as a dental nurse that barely pays the rent. Over the course of the book, she struggles to come to terms with her distant relationship with her adoptive father, a steam locomotive enthusiast and a big fan of Margaret Thatcher. In the fictional first half she imagines the happier lives they might have made for themselves had there been no war, a story that begins with them meeting at a village cricket match outside Colchester. This is followed by a piercing examination of their relationship as it actually was in the shadow of the war. The family's move to Africa, and the impact of her parents' marriage on a young woman growing up in a strange land."  Very Good
