Biggin on the Bump
Ogley, Bob
Froglets Publications Ltd UK 1990
Softcover I am very tempted to list this at $250 as it is just an absolute aviation treat. Anyhoo, should the 250 not be forthcoming here's the details - this book presents the men, the women, the machines and the indomitable spirit of all those drawn into conflict from 1916 to 1945 - and beyond, told through the story of RAF Biggin Hill, the most famous fighter station in the world. Photos, cartoons, crewmen then, crewmen now, crashes, successes, sadness, celebration. The Bump was a curvature on the Biggin airfield and many pilots felt that this was like coming home, so the book was a request from the RAF top brass who had read about the success of In The Wake of the Hurricane and felt that Bob had the tools and skills to produce a review history of Biggin before the RAF left the drome and all the history was forgotten, hence the title. 160pp & right on 500g for post. The Spitfire Story
Price, Alfred
Arms and Armour Press UK 1986
Hardcover The Spitfire is probably the most famous Second World War fighter aircraft. Alfred Price, international authority on the Spitfire, traces the life of the aircraft that has become a living legend. From the original design concept of Reginald Mitchell to the first flight in 1936, and on through 12 years of continuous development, this extensively illustrated history of the Spitfire has benefited from the help of many people engaged in the design, production and testing of the Spitfire, in particular Jeffrey Quill, the former Chief Test Pilot for Supermarine. Quill has written the Foreword for this edition (BTW we have Quill's book as well) review >>> this book is full of anecdotes by the rest of "The Few" Book is approx 1.4kilo to post, 256 engrossing crisply presented pp. review >>> Five stars are not enough for this excellent work.  Very Good/Very Good

Red Partisan: The Memoirs of a Soviet Resistance Fighter on the Eastern Front
Nikolai I. Obryn’ba
Pen & Sword UK 2006
Hardcover 228 crisp pp, 700g packed for post. The author of this excellent book was a very ordinary individual who was just setting out on his career when the Germans invaded Russia in 1941. As a result, he immediately volunteered for service in the Red Army, however when the enemy advanced, it was not long before he was taken prisoner. In this volume , he tells of the brutality of the invader and recalls horrors and atrocious conditions in their prison camps and his subsequent struggle for survival as he escaped and later fought with the partisans behind the German lines in Belorussia. Of course, many volumes have already been written about the campaign on the Eastern Front and both the German and Russian armies, however this is an uncompromising account of the human side of the conflict and life in the Red Army and as the readable text is supported with some excellent black and white photographs. Faults? something has caught the dj & it has a smallish ruffled hole, hence low price for this highly readable hardcover.  Very Good/Fair to Poor

No Place for Chivalry
Goodrum, Alastair
Grub Street UK 2005
Hardcover Inscription & author signature on the title page. 192 crisp pp, photos amidships, just a feather under 500g for posting. No Place for Chivalry encapsulates the story of the air defense of England against attack by night. By taking the area covered by RAF Wittering and Digby sectors, looking at the action of night fighter squadrons operating from those stations and their satellite airfields, the way the battle developed, its timeline of events, the events themselves and the organization of those involved, a coherent picture of how the night air defense of Britain evolved is formed. The narrative is pitched at a level of detail and with such human interest content that it enables readers not only to grasp what is happening and why but also to feel the tensions, frustrations and euphoria of success that the aircrews felt at the time. The reader gets a view from the cockpit or gun turret, to 'meet' and 'fly' with the men of both sides who fought in the air at night - men whose moral standards on the ground were above reproach but, when fighting in the night sky, gave no quarter. Faults? trivial bump to upper right rear corner.  Excellent/Very Good/Excellent

The Battle of Britain
NESBIT, Roy Conyers
Sutton Publishing UK 2000
Hardcover 260 highly illus pp, 1.5 kilo packed to post. Roy Conyers Nesbit not only describes the exploits of RAF Fighter Command and the German Liftwaffe, but he also tells the wider story of the battle--the contributions made to victory by RAF Bomber and Coastal Commands. The Battle of Britain contains a broad, picture-led narrative, drawing on a range of private and museum sources to illustrate the course of this legendary air battle. Rather than concentrate solely on the exploits of RAF Fighter Command, the author's narrative tells the wider story of the battle. This includes the Luftwaffe's viewpoint and the contributions made to victory by Bomber and Coastal Commands; and the British aircraft industry's efforts to supply the RAF with desperately needed fighter aircraft. Roy Conyers-Nesbit is the author of more than sixteen books on aspects of aviation history, amongst the many is a bookseller listing this > Missing Believed Killed by Roy-Conyers Nesbit, I'm sure it's not true.  Excellent/Very Good

RAF Coastal Command in action, 1939-1945
NESBIT, Roy Conyers
Sutton Publishing UK 1997
Hardcover 800g & 182 crisp white pp. Roy Nesbit's researches in the British Public Record Office have brought to light a series of remarkable photographs. During the Second World War the aircraft and crews of RAF Coastal Command played the vital role of patroling and defending the waters around Great Britain from enemy forces, such as long-range fighters and patrol aircraft, marauding U-boats, E-boats and warships. They would attack enemy targets along the coasts of Scan-dinavia, Germany and occupied Europe, and many of these strikes were captured on film -- graphic evidence of the devastating firepower brought to bear by Coastal Command's Mosquitoes, Beaufighters, Beauforts, Sunderlands and other aircraft.  Excellent/Excellent

The book > The blurb on the inside flap of the dust cover pretty well sums up the importance of this book: "World War II was won on the Russian Front. It was here that the Germans incurred 80 per cent of their losses, and it was here that they suffered their first serious defeats. The Russian winter, the skill of the army and the endeavors of the people halted the Blitzkrieg forever. But the Soviet Union paid a staggering price for its victory. More than a quarter of the country's property was destroyed. By the end of the war, 25 million people were homeless, 30 million were wounded and 20 million had been killed.... This is not a military history of the war, but an attempt to to tell the story in human terms." & a review >> The photos in this book reflect all aspects of that nation's experiences during World War II. They mesh effectively with the text, which is predictably patriotic but not stridently so. Though there are numerous photos of military history, this is not a military history per se but, rather, an account of a nation under severe stress. Women's roles, for example, are amply recorded. This excellent collection uniquely captures its subject. In its words and photos lurk the character and values of an extraordinary people.   Very Good/Good/Very Good/Good

Spitfire at War
Price, Alfred
Ian Allan UK 1976
Hardcover 160pp & 800g for posting. Dr Price has many books to his credit & this one focuses on a favourite theme -the Spitfire was the most famous aircraft ever to serve in the Royal Air Force. It remained in production for twelve years which bracketted the hardest-fought and technically most innovatory war in history. When the last one rolled off the production line more than twenty-two thousand had been built. Never before, and rarely since, has an airframe design been so successfully, continuously, aggressively and thoroughly developed. At the end of its development life the Spitfire carried an engine giving more than twice the power and weighing about three-quarters more than the original, had its maximum speed increased by a quarter, its rate of climb almost doubled, its maximum take-off weight more than doubled and its fire-power increased by a factor of five. The Spitfire was unsurpassed as an air-superiority fighter for most of the nine years following its first flight and remained in front-line service in the Royal Air Force for a further nine years after that. Faults? spine sunned. This book has a marvellous selection of wartime shots as well as lots of tech specs & personal recounts.  Very Good/Very Good

Alamein
Bungay, Stephen
Aurum Press UK 2002
Hardcover 266 crisp pp, just under the 500g for posting. 2 photo sections - Stephen Bungay’s Alamein is a trenchant re-examination of an event that has been cloaked in myth. For Great Britain, there were two pivotal battles in the Second World War. One was the Battle of Britain. The other was El Alamein. There, in October 1942, in a remote part of the desert between Libya and Egypt, the British army won an epic battle of attrition with Rommel’s Afrika Korps. It was a defeat from which Rommel would never recover and a turning point in the war, famously celebrated by Churchill as “the end of the beginning”—the line in the sand that Hitler’s forces were never able to cross. review >> Clear exposition and good follow-through with post-battle strategic analysis. Letters from the Army in the Crimea
Anthony Coningham Sterling
The Naval & Military Press
Softcover This is a reproduction of the original & is a compassionate and sardonic view of the heroically mismanaged Crimean War culled from his letters home. The Crimean War acquired its grim notoriety not least because of the frankness of the letters and despatches from the field that shocked the mid-Victorian newspaper reading public. `The Times' correspondent in the Crimea, William Howard Russell, became a household name with his graphic descriptions of the fighting and the suffering of the inadequately clad and led troops. Here, in the same tradition, are the Crimean letters of Captain [later Lieut. Col.] Sir Anthony Coningham Sterling, who came out of retirement to serve as Brigade Major in Sir Colin Campbell's Highland Brigade. The author takes us through the bloody battles of the Alkma and Inkerman and the confusion of Balaclava and into the siege of Sepastopol. Normally stoical and even humorous, the miseries of the campaign sometimes bring him close to despair, especially in the freezing trenches before Sepstopol and after such disasters as the abortive assault on the Great Redan. 496 crisp pp & well over the 500g.  Very Good/None issued

Circles of Hell War in Italy, 1943-45
Morris, Eric
Crown Publishers Inc.  1993 1st American Edition
Hardcover Faults? previous owner careless treatment of dj (several folds) & some pages dogeared by mis-storage. 498pp, 900g for post. A critical look at this appallingly managed campaign describes how the Allies triumphed in spite of dissent, desertion, venereal disease, and the actions of a weak and irresolute British commander and a power-hungry American one. The longest and costliest Anglo-American operation in the WW II European theater, the Italian campaign was beset by controversy: the slaughter of the 36th U.S. Division at the Rapido, the bombing of Monte Cassino, General Mark Clark's exclusion of the British from the capture of Rome. Morris's vigorous narrative is shaped around a harsh but well-supported indictment of Allied generalship in Italy, especially of the insistence on attacking the Germans where they were strongest. Morris also addresses the biggest controversy of all: the degree to which the Allied armies in Italy actually contributed to the defeat of Nazi Germany.  Very Good-good/Fair

Phoenix Triumphant The Rise and Rise of the Luftwaffe
Hooton, ER
Arms and Armour Press UK 1994
Hardcover 320 pp in great order, 800g for post. British historian Hooton uses published sources and archival material to tell a familiar story from a fresh perspective. He describes the development of German air power (Luftwaffe) that began in 1930, well before Hitler's seizure of power, and reached its zenith with the destruction of France in 1940. He focuses on organization, training and equipment, and provides a solid analysis of the Luftwaffe's operational employment, including the occupations of Austria and Czechoslovakia. He also explains how the Germans circumvented the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty to build up the Luftwaffe during the interwar years. The Luftwaffe was more than a ground-support force, the author maintains; its primary mission was to secure air superiority. author info > Edward R. Masters and Commanders, How Roosevelt, Churchill, Marshall and Alanbrooke Won the War in the West
Roberts, Andrew
Allen Lane UK 2008
Hardcover At first glance, it seems remarkable, reading this behind-the-scenes tour of high-level policymaking in the second world war, that the allies managed to defeat the Germans at all. "Masters and Commanders" by Roberts reflects his skilled research in mining previously unavailable diaries and oral histories - a surprising number of senior policymakers were ignoring the rules and jotting things down at night - this book brings vividly to life the personal interactions and impressions of those involved. Roberts has a keen eye for the telling anecdote, and he gives a vivid sense of the extreme strains generated by a struggle fought not in the field but in committee rooms and offices. This research reflected in 674 pp & 1.3 kgs of text. Faults? Personally I wouldn't say it's a fault, but if you wanted a pistine book the first page has a touching personal note of thanks. Battlefields of the Second World War
Holmes, Richard
BBC Books UK 2001
Hardcover This study of war skillfully clarifies the complexities of four major World War II military campaigns: El Alamein, Monte Cassino (Italy), Operation Market Garden (of which Arnhem formed a crucial part), and the Battle of Britain (the RAF's bomber offensive against Germany). The book originates in Holmes's conviction that the sacrifices made by British service personnel are not properly understood. It uses eye-witness accounts to illuminate the horror, confusion and sheer enormity of war, and puts this in the wider context of the conflict's broader strategy. review >>> The author is a Brigadier from the Territorial Army. Bennett and the Pathfinders
Maynard, John
Arms and Armour Press UK 1996
Hardcover ex-lib so usual stamps etc, bumped upper right corner. 249 gripping pp, 700g for postingThis tells the story of the Pathfinders, an elite group of flying aces who worked ahead of US and RAF night bombing missions to lay flares and beams. It is a tale of great bravery, extraordinary navigational skills and advanced flying strategies which ensured the success of the night bombing raids. When the Allies sought to win World War II by bombing raids on Germany, it was soon realized that daylight flights were too dangerous and nightflights too inaccurate. Arthur Harris charged an Australian flying ace, Don Bennett, with the task of creating an elite group who could fly ahead of the main aircraft to lay flares and beams. This group, called the Pathfinders, was composed of members of British and Commonwealth air forces acting together. This book assesses the value of the Pathfinders in the wartime air strategy, and also contains stories of exciting air action, innovative flying, charismatic characters and behind-the scenes controversies. bibliog & appendices at rear  Good/Good
