The South Wales Main Line : Part 2 Severn Tunnel to Newport
Hodge, John
ISBN: 1874103763
Wild Swan Publications Oxon, England 2002 First Edition
Hard Cover 116 Pages b/w photos - The GWR's two southernmost routes into South Wales converged at Severn Tunnel Junction, carrying not only traffic to and from the Principality, but also between the North and West of England, which diverged at Maindee Junction in the eastern part of Newport. Between these point ran a huge variety of services, with the main expresses from Paddington to South and West Wales, alternating with Plymouth to Manchester and Liverpool trains, whilst a considerable number of goods, minerals and empties intermingled with them, making the section one of the busiest on the system. To the west of Maindee, the South Wales main line continued through Newport (High Street), its twin tunnels, and then skirted the vast marshalling yards serving Newport Docks as it made its way to Ebbw Junction and the outskirts of town. In this, his second book of the series, John Hodge continues his survey of the main line in the 1950s and 60s from the western portal of the Severn Tunnel to the crossing of the Ebbw River on the southern limits of Newport.   Very Good/Good

The Giant’s Ladder : David H Moffat and His Railroad
Boner, Harold A.
Kalmbach Publishing Co Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA 1962 First Edition
Hard Cover 224 pages b/w photos - David H. Moffat and his business associates established the Denver, Northwestern and Pacific Railway. It originated in Denver, and was planned to terminate in Salt Lake City, Utah. Construction began on December 18, 1902. The DN&P started north up the Front Range of the Rockies towards Boulder. This ascent to the point where the line turned west, is a great example of exceptional mountain railroad surveying. Chief Engineer H.A. Sumner needing to enter South Boulder Canyon as high as possible, did not want more than a 2% grade. To do this, he laid out a highly efficient route to gain the necessary altitude that features the now famous Big Ten Curve. The climb to the Continental Divide required 33 tunnels that were several hundred feet long. The tracks did not reach the western end of the Tolland area until 1903. Once completed, the 33 tunnels between Denver and Tolland are closer together than any other tunnels on any other line in the United States. Rollins Pass was next over the divide at Corona, at an elevation 11,680 feet (3,560 m), and then the line went down the western face of the divide. Originally, Moffat had planned to build a tunnel through the worst part of the pass, but his original plans failed. Instead, the DNW&P tracks climbed Rollins Pass with a series of switch back loops requiring steep grades and experiencing severe snow conditions. The line over the pass was 23 miles (37 km) long, with a 4% grade along many stretches, and was the highest railroad ever constructed in North America. A small rail stop called Corona was established at the top of the pass, with a restaurant and lodging, which allowed workers to help keep the rail line free of snow in the winter. Trains were often stranded for several days during heavy winter snows. Removing snow from the original line went on to make it unprofitable to operate. The line was complete all the way to Arrow by the winter of 1904. In the spring of 1905, the tracks were completed all the way to Fraser. From there, the tracks went through Tabernash, Granby, Hot Sulphur Springs, Byers Canyon, and then Parshall, which is at the mouth of Williams Fork canyon. The town of Kremmling, Colorado was finally reached in July 1906. The tracks then went West through the Gore Canyon past Radium, finally connecting at State Bridge to North-South tracks. These tracks did not reach Steamboat Springs until the winter of 1909. Moffat died on March 18, 1911 in New York City at the age of seventy three. The DN&P had cost him $75,000 a mile, and Rollins Pass had cost him the rest of his fortune, a total of fourteen million dollars. He was in New York City trying to raise more money for the railroad, and was stopped by what would later be learned was the doing of E. H. Harriman and George Jay Gould I. DNW&P was placed in receivership on May 2, 1912, and on April 30, 1913 was reformed as the Denver and Salt Lake Railroad, though it went bankrupt before reaching Salt Lake City. By 1913 the tracks through Steamboat Springs had reached Craig in Moffat County, Although Moffat was looked at the time as a vain dreamer, he would later be looked at by many as ahead of his time. His legacy would leave Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and later Union Pacific with a railroad that would outlast most other rail lines in Colorado. Other than the Rollins Pass part all of the railroad is still in use today by Union Pacific, and the Denver to Phippsburg part is called Moffat Tunnel Subdivision.  Very Good/Very Good

Narrow Gauge Railways : England and the Fifteen Inch
Household, Humphrey
ISBN: 1856481786
Alan Sutton Publishing Stroud, Glos, England 1989 First Edition
Hard Cover price clipped 178 pages b/w photos - Sir Arthur Heywood pioneered this gauge at Duffield Bank, Derbyshire (UK) starting in 1874: Starting with a line leading from the drive to the workshops near the house, this grew during the next seven years to a length of a little over a mile, including sidings, and was designed to test thoroughly the potential of the gauge. The extension from the workshops climbed for about a quarter of a mile on gradients of 1 in 10 and 1 in 12 as it rounded a severe curve and doubled back on itself to reach old quarries 80ft. higher, where there was space to lay a "main line" with a loop at each end, part of it level, part on a gradient no worse than 1 in 20. Here there were three tunnels, two bridges, a timber trestle viaduct 19ft. long and 20ft. high, and six stations. The line was equipped with interlocking points and signals which were worked from two signal boxes linked by telephone. The gauge became popular for both private garden and estate railways - the Duke of Westminster saved £225 per year - a significant amount in those days - compared to road cartage when Sir Arthur persuaded him to install a three mile line linking the Duke's Eaton Hall estate to the nearest station on the GWR Shrewsbury-Chester line  Very Good/Good

The Aberford Railway : And the History of The Garforth Collieries
Hudson, Graham S.
ISBN: 0715352008
David & Charles Newton Abbot, Devon, England 1971 First Edition
Hard Cover 184 pages b/w photos - colour plate - The Aberford Railway was a privately owned light railway built in the 19th century between Garforth and Aberford by the Gascoigne family of Yorkshire to transport coal from their collieries via the Great North Road and a connection with the contemporary Leeds and Selby Railway. The railway was locally known as the Fly line. Mining in the Garforth area of West Yorkshire dates back centuries, and the Gascoignes, being major landholders in the area, had owned pits since at least the 17th century. The introduction of steam-driven pumps in the 18th century allowed deeper mines to be worked, and extended the usefulness of the Gascoignes' mines. The area around Garforth and Aberford was at a disadvantage compared to other mining regions because of poor transportation. High turnpike fees, and the inability to access the Aire and Calder Navigation due to competing interests owning land on the few miles to the canal meant that the sale of coal to nearby Leeds was uneconomic. In 1833, surveying of the line began; at the same time, the Leeds and Selby Railway was under construction, and Gascoigne, also a a shareholder in the Leeds and Selby had obtained favourable rates for transport of coal to Selby on that line. The line was surveyed by William Harker and William Walker, and the route was a uphill from Abeford to Garforth with a maximum gradient of 1 in 72. The line opened in the late 1830s with the cooperation of the Leeds and Selby, and carried both freight and passengers. A stationary engine was installed on the line between the Isabella and Sisters' pits which was also double tracked; the rest of the railway was single track. Passenger traffic briefly ceased as a result of loss of a connection to Leeds whilst the Leeds and Selby railway was under George Hudson's control and was closed to passenger in favour of other lines. The line was successful in aiding the transport and sale of coal, in particular to the agricultural areas to the north such as Tadcaster and Wetherby, which lacked indigenous coal resources. From the 1870s, horse-powered transport was replaced by steam engines - the first being a Manning Wardle Class H 0-4-0 locomotive named Mulciber purchased in 1870. Having reached its zenith at the beginning of the 20th century, with 440,000 tons per year being produced, 120,000 of which exported via Hull. The First World War, and the death of many men during it, as well as an embargo on exported coal, contributed to the decline of the pits; in 1920, the Gascoignes sold the pits and railway, both of which were steadily run down in the next decade. The line closed in 1924, the collieries in 1930.  Good/No Jacket

Rails in the Fells
Jenkinson, David
ISBN: 0900586427
Peco Publishing Seaton, Devon, UK 1973 First Edition
Hard Cover 157 pages b/w photos - A significant and serious look at the Settle and Carlisle branch of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway by distinguished railroad historian, David Jenkinson. In this groundbreaking work, the author examined not just the railway but the surrounding countryside and examines the economic and social effect the railway had on its neighbors. Today this book would be called "human geography," but Jenkinson was ahead of his time. In precise and accessible prose, he uncovered the connections. Illustrated with numerous black and white photos as well as maps, statistical charts of all sorts (including agricultural and mineral), station plans, the parish map, lists of passenger bookings and takings, total freight tonnage, shed allocations, train formations, coaching stock and motive power.   Very Good/Very Good

The North Western at Work : A Portrait of the LNWR
Hendry, R. Preston & Hendry, R. Powell
ISBN: 1852601299
Patrick Stephens Limited Cambridge, England 1990 First Edition
Hard Cover 192 pages b/w photos - The London and North Western Railway network spread from London's Euston station west to Shrewsbury and Holyhead, north to Carlisle and east to Peterborough. It was described as "the largest joint stock company in the world", and became a major constituent of the LMS in 1923. Using a wide variety of source material, including personal reminiscences from before World War 1, the author paints a picture of the men, from porter to Chairman and the locomotives, traffic, signalling and administration that went to make up Britain's "Premier Line". The authors, a father and son team have had a lifelong interest in the LNWR. The father spent his childhood spotting trains on the Liverpool-Southport section of the Lancashire and Yorkshore Railway. His son inherited that love of railways and made his first visits to the lineside when he was a few months old.  Very Good/Good

Vermont’s Granite Railroads : The Montpelier & Wells River and the Barre & Chelsea
Robert C. & Maxfield, Whitney J. & Gove, William G.
ISBN: 0871086956
Pruett Publishing Co. Boulder, Colorado, USA 1985 First Edition
Hard Cover 277 pages b/w photos - Traces the history of railroading in north-central Vermont with a focus on the Montpelier-Barre area from the 1870s to 1983. Readers gain a clear sense of how these lines fit into the regional and international rail network, and how larger-scale social/economic factors affected the economic viability of railroads. The focus isn't solely on serving granite quarries and cutting sheds, but includes a wider range on the mix of passenger and freight at different times in the period covered. There are over 300 photos and diagrams; printing and photo quality is high. This book is very well written, and should be of interest to people interested in economic waxing/waning of an industry, Vermont history generally, and to model railroaders interested in New England layout themes. There are not many detailed routing schedules, but there is enough information on various kinds of industries and uses that were served (excursion trains to Boston, local lakes or the White Mountains for example) that modelers could work up their own schedules based closely on real uses. There are 11 hand-sketches (no scale) showing track/siding details for larger or smaller areas in Vermont and New Hampshire - mostly in Barre City (1890, 1900, 1910, 1914, 1985) and Montpelier (1895, 1915, 1925).   Very Good/Very Good

The Book of the Ivatt 4MTs LM Class 4 2-6-0s
Sixsmith, Ian
ISBN: 9781906919450
Irwell Press Clophill, Bedfordshire, England 2012 First Edition
Laminated Pictorial Boards 250 pages b/w photos - When a class of engine is christened by enthusiasts ‘Doodlebugs’ or ‘Flying Pigs’, amongst a number of other less than admiring nicknames, there is an implication that the LMS Ivatt Class 4 2-6-0s were not the most admired of locomotives. Little has been written about them compared with their more glamorous brethren and it seems that in their early days there was some confusion about their purpose. They were the last steam design produced by the LMS and intended as a replacement for the 4F freight engines, but much of their time was spent on passenger work. They were quickly re-designated mixed traffic engines by their new British Railways owners and this book uses ‘4MTs’ as an appropriate short-hand for these 2-6-0s. In their early days the 4MTs had something of a Jekyll and Hyde existence: although fitted with all the post-war labour-saving fixtures and equipped with well-intended creature comforts for the enginemen, there was obviously something amiss in their proportions because they were often chronically short of steam. It took several years and some Swindon magic to make a few simple but transformational changes to put them right. After that, they settled down and became widely travelled and generally well regarded, at least by railwaymen if not by enthusiasts. As is now standard in the Book of series a large chunk of the material by volume comes from the Engine History Cards and Engine Record Cards aided and abetted by information begged and borrowed from a number of sources, and backed up by a large number of photographs.   New/No Jacket

Soft Cover 108 pages b/w photos - The Reading Company, usually called the Reading Railroad, officially the Philadelphia and Reading Rail Road and then the Philadelphia and Reading Railway until 1924, operated in southeast Pennsylvania and neighboring states. Until the decline in anthracite loadings in the Coal Region after World War II it was one of the most prosperous corporations in the United States. Reduced coal traffic coupled with highway competition and short hauls forced it into bankruptcy in the 1970s. The railroad was merged into Conrail in 1976, but the corporation lasted into 2000, disposing of real estate holdings.  Very Good/No Jacket

Lesser Railways of Bowland Forest and Craven Country and the Dam Builders in the Age of Steam
BOWTELL, Harold D.
ISBN: 0951110888
Plateway Press Norwich, Norfolk, England 1988 First Edition
Hard Cover 112 pages b/w photos - This book - third in the 'Dam Builders in the Age of Steam' chronology - tells the remarkable story of men and machines engaged in the construction of dams and reservoirs in much of Lancashire and Yorkshire during the period from the 1890's to the 1930's. The ground covered is that superb area of Lancashire between the Ribble and the Lune, bounded on the west by the Lancaster -Carlisle Railway, extending eastwards into Yorkshire, touching the Leeds - Settle - Carlisle railway at Long Preston and Hellifield. The tale then passes into the Craven district of Yorkshire, around Skipton and towards Haworth, of Bronte fame and the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. Following an outline of the historical background to each scheme, the author describes the often complex railway systems developed by the Water Authorities (or their chosen Contractors) to service the construction works. Daily life on the railways is chronicled as they carry earthfill material to the dam site, clay from the clayfields, stone from the quarries, bricks and cement, and coal for locomotives and other steam plant. To isolated navvy settlements they provide an all-round transport service, for mail, groceries, beer and clothing, and many railways are used for man-riding by the 'paddy mail' train morning and evening. Railways of 3ft gauge predominate, but 2ft and 4ft 81/2in. gauges also appear.  Very Good/Good

Missouri Pacific Northwest : A History of the Kansas City Northwest Railroad
Quastler, I E
ISBN: 0942035305
South Platte Press David City, Nebraska, USA 1994 First Edition
Soft Cover 136 pages b/w photos - A history of a Kansas short line running from Kansas City to Beatrice, Nebraska later acquired by the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The Kansas City Northwestern is a railroad that should never have been built. The 160-mile line from Kansas City to Beatrice, Neb., with a branch to Leavenworth, Kan., was built during the late 1880s, a time of tremendous optimism about railroads. The railroad went into receivership shortly after its completion and drew the attention of financier Jay Gould. Ownership transferred to officers of the Gould-controlled Missouri Pacific, though it continued to operate separately but with its northern terminus moved from Beatrice to tiny nearby Virginia, Neb. The MP spun off the rarely profitable Kansas City Northwestern to its bondholders in 1917. Its financial situation deteriorated, and the line ceased operations in 1919.   Very Good/No Jacket

Mount Mitchell : Its Railroad & Toll Road
Lovelace, Jeff
ISBN: 0932807844
The Overmountain Press Johnson City, Tennessee, USA 1994 First Edition
Soft Cover 86 pages b/w photos - Short line mountain railroads are often miracles of construction. Built primarily for shipping logs, the Mount Mitchell Railroad was no exception. Within a span of 2l miles, the road climbed 3,500 feet, but utilized only three trestles and nine switchbacks, while maintaining a grade of five and a half percent. In this richly illustrated work the author brings to life a time when Mount Mitchell was dressed in vir-gin timber. Access to the mountain, located in West-em North Carolina, was slow and difficult; but after completion of the railroad, a timbering industry was born. The railroad also provided tourists with scenic trips along its rugged contours. When passenger service was discontinued, a motor toll road was built over much of the same route. Its completion marked the first time visitors could travel to Mount Mitchell using their automobiles.   Good/No Jacket

The Brief History of The Launceston & Western Railway 1867 - 1904
Chamberlain, Brian R.
ISBN: 0949457027
by the Author Launceston, Tasmania, Australia 1985 First Edition
Soft Cover 74 pages b/w photos - date approximate - The original Line was built in 1871 as a private 1,600 mm (5 ft 3 in) broad gauge railway that opened between Deloraine and Launceston to ship agricultural products to port for Victorian markets. The Launceston and Western Railway was formed on 9 May 1867 and the first sod of the line was turned on 15 January 1868 by the Duke of Edinburgh who was on a visit to the Colonies. A Contract for the construction work was let in July 1868. Construction work progressed during the following 18 months, but delays were experienced with the construction of the bridge over the South Esk River. In 1869, the contractors brought from Victoria two tank locomotives for construction work. The date for completion as set out in the Contract was 10 March 1870, but an extension was given and construction continued to a point where the Opening Date could be set for the following September. Extensive rains resulted in further delays and it was not until 10 February 1871 that the line was opened for traffic by the Governor. In 1868, two locomotives were ordered from Robert Stephenson and Company. These arrived in December 1869, together with goods and passenger vehicles. A repeat order for an additional two locomotives was placed in November 1869 and these were placed in service in November 1870. When the line was opened, a service of three double-headed trains each way per day was operated, but this proved unsatisfactory and later on one locomotive per run was used. Up until 1880, three classes of passenger accommodation were provided but third class was withdrawn after that year. By December 1872, it was agreed that a fifth locomotive was required and an order was placed with Sharp Stewart and Company. The construction contractor continued to operate the railway until November 1871, the Company then took over. During the construction period, the Company had experienced some difficulty in raising the necessary finance to meet the cost of construction. It applied to the Government for assistance. The Government appointed two Railway Commissioners to generally supervise all railway construction and advance the Company the finance to complete the building of the line. Traffic showed an increase after the Company took over the working of the line, however difficulties were experienced in continuing operations. Negotiations were commenced with a view of the Government taking over the line. These negotiations were concluded and the Government took over the line from 31 October 1873. The events recorded in this publication commenced just prior to the Launceston and Western Railway being registered as a company in 1867, continuing until its financial collapse during 1871. Consequently the book mainly refers to the railway, during its private ownership and operation. Includes a biographical account of the company staff and directors. Many photographs of the railway and the company directors.Contents: Preface - Acknowledgements - Summary of Main Events - The Launceston-Deloraine Railway, Tasmania's Pioneer Railway - Railway Uproar - the Aftermath - Launceston and Western Railway Company Limited, 1871 - Launceston and Western Railway Biographical  Very Good/No Jacket

The Henley - On - Thames Branch
Karau, Paul & Turner, Chris
ISBN: 0906867037
Wild Swan Publications Didcot, Berks., England 1982 First Edition
Hard Cover 176 pages b/w photos - The Henley branch, opened in 1857 as one of Brunel's broad gauge 'feeder lines', provided easy access and effectively increased the town's popularity as a Thameside resort and home of the famous Royal Regatta. The increasing traffic necessitated a continuing expansion of facilities and culminated in the doubling of the line in 1897 This account retraces the hitherto unrecorded history of this neglected line which, terminating some 351/2 miles from Paddington, accommodated long trains hauled by main line express locos and yet in quieter moments so often seemed little more that a minor country branch line The author was born in Henley and spent many happy hours exploring the line, particularly as a young schoolboy. However, the demolition of, in the first instance, the engine shed, water tower and goods shed, such seemingly permanent features, made him realise the need to record the railway and eventually led him to research the history of the branch. Although the line is still open, the author makes no apology for not including a detailed account of the economies following the demise of steam. Henley station has almost totally disappeared, together with so many familiar features, and it is hoped that the reader may be left with an impression of the line in happier times when the service was thriving and vital to the town's economy.  Very Good/Very Good

The Didcot Newbury and Southampton Railway
KARAU, Paul, PARSONS, Mike and ROBERTSON, Kevin
ISBN: 0906867045
Wild Swan Publications Didcot, Berks., England 1984 First Edition
Hard Cover 224 pages b/w photos - dust jacket spine sunned - A through route linking the Midlands and the North with the port of Southampton had been the dream of railway promoters since the early days of railway mania. It seemed the dream would at last be realised in 1873 with the establishment of the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Junction Railway Company. This history attempts to trace the story of that railway from those early years, taking the reader from the rain-soaked field just outside Newbury in which Lady Carnarvon tumed the first sod, through the bitter fight for a direct link with Southampton, the endless arguments with the GWR and LSWR, its wartime heyday and ultimately on to its decline and closure. In addition to the account of the line's fascinating history, also featured are details of operation, locos used, traffic handled (including statistics), wartime rebuilding, route description, station notes, etc., over 300 varied photos including views of the Second World War alterations, maps, track plans of each station, signalling diagrams and scale drawings of selected buildings.  Very Good/Good

British Main Line Services 1900 - 1968
Harris, Michael
ISBN: 0860935361
Oxford Publishing Co. Yeovil, Somerset, England 1996 First Edition
Hard Cover 224 pages b/w photos - A book which looks at the changes that took place in main line railway passenger services during the 20th century. There were often special reasons of prestige, competition, local business or political interest for the way that railway services developed and their patterns of operation were maintained. All of these are discussed. The book details the main line services of all railway companies in England, Scotland and Wales. The heyday of steam railway operation in the years prior to World War I are compared with the inter-war years, World War II and the final services of the 1960s. The complex cross-country services such as Birkenhead to Dover and Aberdeen to Penzance are described along with the operation of famous trains such as the "Flying Scotsman", the "Royal Scot", the "Sunny South Express", the "Night Ferry" and the "Cheltenham Flyer". Information is also provided on the pre-Grouping railways of 1900-1922, the "Big Four" of 1923-1947 and the nationalized network, 1948-1968.  As New/As New

Great Western Railway Locomotive Allocations for 1921
Harrison, Ian
ISBN: 0906867215
Wild Swan Publications Didcot, Berks., England 1984 First Edition
Soft Cover 32 pages b/w photos - The locomotive allocations given in this book are taken from the original Great Western Railway locomotive registers now kept in the Public record Office at Kew. These registers record the allocation of each engine at 1st January 1921, together with the subsequent allocations at the end of thirteen 'four week' periods throughout the year. The GWR registers include not only the company's own locomotives and railmotors but also those of the Welsh railways which were effectively under GWR control, together with a few engines on loan to the GWR. Several of the locos operated by the Rhondda and Swansea Bay Railway, the Port Talbot Railway and the South Wales Mineral Railway were ex-GWR engines and major repairs were conducted at Swindon Works. The allocations of these locomotives are also included here.  Very Good/No Jacket

The Great British Railway Station Kings Cross
Hawkins, Chris
ISBN: 1871608147
Irwell Press Clophill, Bedfordshire, England 1990 First Edition
Hard Cover 92 pages b/w photos - King's Cross was originally designed and built as the London hub of the Great Northern Railway and terminus of the East Coast main line. It took its name from the Kings Cross area of London, which itself was named after a monument to King George IV. The monument was demolished in 1845. Plans for the station were first made in December 1848 by and under the direction of George Turnbull, who was the resident engineer for construction of the first 20 miles of the Great Northern Railway north out of London. The detailed design, by Lewis Cubitt, and construction was in 1851 - 1852 on the site of a former fever and smallpox hospital. The main part of the station, which today includes platforms 1 to 8, was opened on 14 October 1852. It replaced a temporary terminus at Maiden Lane that had opened on 8 August 1850.The platforms have been reconfigured several times. Originally there were only one arrival and one departure platform (today's platforms 1 and 8 respectively), with the space between used for carriage sidings. In later years, as suburban traffic grew, space for additional platforms was added with considerably less grandeur. The secondary building now containing platforms 9 - 11 (and the fictional Platform 9 3/4) survives from that era.  Good/Good

Soft Cover 80 pages profusely illustrated b/w photos - The Chicago Great Western Railway (reporting mark CGW) was a Class I railroad that linked Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha, and Kansas City. It was founded by Alpheus Beede Stickney in 1885 as a regional line between St. Paul and the Iowa state line called the Minnesota and Northwestern Railroad. Through mergers and new construction, the railroad, named Chicago Great Western after 1892, quickly became a multi-state carrier. One of the last Class I railroads to be built, it competed against several other more well-established railroads in the same territory, and developed a corporate culture of innovation and efficiency to survive. Nicknamed the Corn Belt Route because of its operating area in the midwestern United States, the railroad was sometimes called the Lucky Strike Road, due to the similarity in design between the herald of the CGW and the logo used for Lucky Strike cigarettes. In 1960 it reported 2474 million net ton-miles of revenue freight and 4 million passenger miles; at the end of that year it operated 1469 miles of road and 2117 miles of track. In 1968 it merged with the Chicago and North Western Railway (CNW), which abandoned most of the CGW's trackage.  Good/No Jacket

It describes a momentous period in the railway's 150 years of operation which witnessed the end of the steam train era, the slashing of the organization's size, and the attempt to build a modern commercial organization while working with technology up to 80 years old. Mind the Curve : A History of cable Trams
Keating, John D.
Transit Australia Publishing Melbourne, Victoria, Australia 1996 Reprint
Soft Cover 155 pages b/w photos - Operating from 1885 until 1940, Melbourne's cable tram system was the fourth biggest in the world, with about 75 km of double track, 17 inner-suburban routes, and 600 cable car and trailer sets. Cable trams depended for their motive power on a cable in a slot between the rails, kept moving by an engine house along the route. In the first car (the dummy), the driver (the gripman) worked the levers that gripped the cable to make the tram move. Passengers could ride in the dummy, but apart from the roof it was quite open. To warn passengers to hold on when the tram departed from a straight line, the gripman usually called 'mind the curve!' The second car was more like a conventional small tram, but was only a trailer, pulled along by the dummy. Melbourne's first cable tram ran on 11 November 1885 from Spencer Street along Flinders Street and Bridge Road Richmond, about 5 km to Hawthorn Bridge. The last ran on 26 October 1940 from the intersection of Spencer and Bourke streets to the terminus at Northcote. Although built over eight years by a Tramway Trust formed by 12 inner-city municipalities, Melbourne's main cable tram routes were until 1916 run by the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co., a private enterprise operation managed by Francis Boardman Clapp and Henry Hoyt. The economic collapse of the early 1890s limited further development of the network which remained the crux of Melbourne's street transport system until the late 1920s. Independent electric tram systems were set up as feeder lines to the cable tram terminuses. After the whole system was taken over by the Victorian Government, electric trams began to appear in the city. They replaced cable trams in Swanston Street in 1926, Flinders Street in 1927, Collins Street in 1929 and, finally, Bourke Street in 1940. Traces of the cable tram system are barely visible in the city landscape. Rathdowne Street owes its median strip to the North Carlton-St Kilda line, closed in 1936, the engine house at Park Street now converted to apartments. The restored Cable Tram No. 1 is on display at Melbourne Museum.  Ex-Library Good/No Jacket

Withers, Paul K. & Calloway, Warren L. & Wilson, J. Harlen
ISBN: 1881411095
Withers Publishing Pennsylvania, USA 1997 First Edition
Hard Cover 376 pages b/w photos - At the time of its merger with Norfolk & Western on June 1, 1982, the Southern Railway operated 10,057 route miles. To move its trains across this vast system, the carrier relied on a wide variety of diesel locomotive makes and models. From the carrier's first road freight diesel, EMC's FT, and its classic slant-nose EMD E6 passenger diesels, to its final locomotive purchases, General Electric's B30-7A1 model, Southern Railway and its subsidiaries relied on the latest in locomotive technology to meet its goals. Join us as we take a look at all of the diesel models operated by the Southern between 1939 and 1982, from the Sylvan green and aluminum gray cab units of the 1940s and 1950s, through the black and aluminum GP38-2s, GP50s, and SD40-2s that formed the backbone of the fleet in the 1970s and 1980s  Good/Good

Bernhart & Bernhart
ISBN: 189140203X
Outer Station Project Reading, Pa, USA 1999 First Edition

Steaming UP : The Autobiography of Samuel M. Vauclain
Vauclain Samuel M
ISBN: 0870950444
Golden West USA 1981 Third Printing
Hard Cover 319 pages b/w photos - Samuel Matthews Vauclain (May 18, 1856 - February 4, 1940) was an American engineer, inventor of the Vauclain compound locomotive, and president of the Baldwin Locomotive Works. He was awarded the John Scott Award and the Elliott Cresson Medal by The Franklin Institute in 1891. He was also awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for arming the United States Army during World War I. Vauclain served an apprenticeship in the machine shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad. When he was 24, he was sent to inspect locomotives at the Baldwin Locomotive Works. In those days, machining was a manual job with the machining done by hammers, files and chisels with the mens' own hands. Vauclain's hands were left in a permanent clutching position from endless hours of chipping and filing metal. He became general foreman of Baldwin's 17th Street Shops in 1883, and quickly moved up through the company, as plant superintendent in 1886, then general superintendent. He joined the Board of Directors in 1896, became Vice-President in 1911, Senior Vice-President in 1917, President from 1919 to 1929, and Chairman of the Board from then until his death. He was awarded the Elliott Cresson Medal by The Franklin Institute in 1891. At the same time, the Franklin Institute selected Vauclain for the John Scott Award funded by the City of Philadelphia.  Very Good/Good

700 : The 700 Series Locomotives of the South Australian Railways
Colquhoun, Douglas & Stewien, Ronald & Thomas, Adrian
Australian Railway Historical Society (SA) Adelaide, South Australia, Australia 1979 Second Edition
Soft Cover 52 pages b/w photos - The first South Australian Railways 700 Class locomotives were built during the mid 1920s in Great Britain by the Armstrong Whitworth Company and were used as main line freight locomotives, releasing the aged small power Rx-class fleet for shunting and branch line services. The difference in power between these two classes can be gauged by the fact that a 700 could lift 390 tons over Mt Lofty while an Rx could manage only 190 tons. The 700-class Mikado type locomotive proved so successful that another ten were ordered, this time from the SAR's own Islington Workshops. Though dimensionally similar to the original engines they differed in some minor details and as a result were classified 710. Unfortunately the Mikado fleet were all sent to the breakers yard for scrap metal during the 1960s. One example of the Class survives as a static exhibit at the National Railway Museum at Port Adelaide.  Very Good/No Jacket
