Not knowing the name of his family or where he was from, he survived for weeks on the streets of Kolkata, before being taken into an orphanage and adopted by a couple in Australia. Despite being happy in his new family, Saroo always wondered about his origins. He spent hours staring at the map of India on his bedroom wall. When he was a young man the advent of Google Earth led him to pore over satellite images of the country for landmarks he recognised. And one day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for. Then he set off on a journey to find his mother. A Man Among Mavericks : Lester Brain: Australia's Greatest Aviator
Cadigan, Neil
ISBN: 9780733320965
ABC Books, Australia, 2008. First Edition
Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Very Good/. First Edition. 238 pages. Covers have no creasing. Corners of covers are lightly bumped. Spine is uncreased. Edges of pages are slightly foxed. Pages are lightly tanned. Who on earth was Lester Brain? Neil Cadigan came across this little-known aviator who changed the face of Australian aviator history. Here was a man who was one of Australia's true pioneers, not like the flamboyant flying men Charles Kingsford Smith, Charles Ulm, Bert Hinkler or the Smith brothers. Grabbing a long-forgotten transcript of an interview with Lester, Neil set off on a journey following the path of Lester Brain, traversing the unpredictable terrain of Australia, visiting places like Broome, Alice Springs, Camooweal, Cloncurry, Brisbane and Longreach. He discovered a man whose amazing flying adventures read like a boy's own annual. From prospecting for gold reefs in the Tanami Desert to rescuing the hapless aviators Anderson and Hitchcock, whose aircraft, the Kookaburra, went missing while searching for Kingsford Smith and Ulm. In 1929, Lester was rated the best aviator in Australia, taught many of the country's greatest pilots, rescued survivors during a Japanese attack on Broome during World War II, took the controls for inaugural mail and flying-boat services for Qantas, and contributed more towards the world-renowned safety record of Qantas in its formative three decades than any other aviator. A Man Named Dave

ISBN: 9781407210858
Orion, Great Britain, 2001. Reprint
Paperback Paperback. Very Good/. Reprint. 426 pages. Minor edgewear and creasing to covers. Moderate spine lean. These words were Dave Pelzer's declaration of independence to his mother, and they represented the ultimate act of self-reliance. This was the woman who told her son she could kill him any time she wanted to - and nearly did. The more than two million readers of Pelzer's previous international bestsellers, A Child Called "It" and The Lost Boy, know that he lived to tell his courageous story. A Stolen Life
Dugard, Jaycee
ISBN: 9780857207128
Simon & Schuster, London, 2011. Reprint
Medium Trade Paperback Medium Trade Paperback. Very Good/. Reprint. 273 pages. Covers have no creasing. Spine has minimal reading creases. Pages are lightly tanned. Previous owner's name in ink. On 10 June 1991, eleven-year-old Jaycee Dugard was abducted from a school bus stop within sight of her home in Tahoe, California. It was the last her family and friends saw of her for over eighteen years. On 26 August 2009, Dugard, her daughters, and Phillip Craig Garrido appeared in the office of her kidnapper's parole officer in California. Their unusual behaviour sparked an investigation that led to the positive identification of Jaycee Lee Dugard, living in a tent behind Garrido's home. During her time in captivity, at the age of fourteen and seventeen, she gave birth to two daughters, both fathered by Garrido. Dugard's memoir, as yet untitled, is being written by the 30-year-old herself and covers the period from the time of her abduction in 1991 up until the present. In her stark, compelling narrative, Jaycee opens up about what she experienced, including how she feels now, a year after being found. Garrido and his wife Nancy have since pleaded guilty to their crimes. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Biography & Autobiography; True Crime. ISBN/EAN: 9780857207128. Category: Biography & Autobiography; ISBN/EAN: 9780857207135. Inventory No: 19050025. Near Fine

A Voyage Round John Mortimer : A Biography of the Creator of Rumpole of the Bailey

Edges of dust jacket have superficial wear. Dust jacket is unclipped. Dust jacket is protected in clear, plastic sleeve. Edges of pages are lightly browned. Remainder mark on page edges. The tremendously dishy life of one of the most admired and lively literary figures today Novelist, playwright, and barrister Sir John Mortimer has led an extraordinarily rich and daring life, privately and professionally, much of it in the public eye. His own writings, from the play "A Voyage Round My Father" to his wildly popular books in the Rumpole series, to his three acclaimed volumes of autobiography, and his screenplay for "Brideshead Revisited," have rewarded readers and viewers with insight and humor. Now, for the first time, biographer Valerie Grove has been given full access to Mortimer. "A Voyage Round John Mortimer" traces Mortimer's legal and literary career, from his first attempts at writing novels and plays, and the early help he offered his barrister father, through his great triumphs in court, to the creation of Horace Rumpole, one of the most popular characters in contemporary fiction and television. Mortimer's personal life?including his marriages to Penelope Mortimer and to Penny II, and his many affairs?is as colorful as any fiction he's written. Correcting the many errors and half-truths found in a previous biography by Graham Lord, Valerie Grove's book is essential reading for Mortimer's many fans. Quantity Available: 1. A Wild Life : Bringing Up a Bush Menagerie
Carter, Mare
ISBN: 1863252932
Bantam, Australia, 2001. First Edition
Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Good/. First Edition. 340 pages. Covers have moderate creasing. Spine has minimal reading creases. Pages are reasonably tanned. In the 1960s Mare and Jeff Carter staged their own 'Sea Change'. Swapping city life for a cottage in the Australian bush, Mare was searching for a better way to live and bring up their children. But she soon discovered life had lot more in store for her. Within months hers had become a surrogate home for orphaned and injured wildlife: a string of lovable wombats, a solitary but sexually frustrated kangaroo, madcap emus, eagles, wallabies, dingos and many more. Ultimately Mare's farm became one of Australia's most popular wildlife sanctuaries, attracting more than 25,000 visitors a year. But A WILD LIFE is much more than a captivating story of creatures great and small. It is the memoir of an extraordinary woman, determined to follow a different life path and live out her dream against all the odds. Mare writes with warmth and humour about her very unconventional family and of the realities both harsh and hilarious of living in the wild. Quantity Available: 1. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. From the number one New York Times bestselling author of Running with Scissors comes an hilarious, frightening and compulsively readable new memoir. A Wolf at the Table tells the story of Augusten's early childhood when he lived with his crazy father, John Robison Sr, a man only briefly touched upon in Running with Scissors, his spaced-out poet mother, and his delinquent older brother, John Robison Jnr (author of Look Me in the Eye). Told with brutal honesty and psychologically penetrating insight, it chronicles the young Augusten's increasing paranoia as he navigates a household that is by turns very funny, and very sinister. He wants his big brother to like him and his mother to understand him, but most of all he wants his father's love and acceptance, yet can't be sure he isn't a ticking time bomb... A Writer's People : Ways Of Looking And Feeling
Naipaul, V S
ISBN: 9780330485241
Picador,  2007. First Edition
Hardcover Hardcover. Near Fine/New. First Edition. 194 pages. Multiple copies of this title available. This book is an unread copy. Boards have no wear, rubbing or soiling. Pages are lightly tanned. Over the course of his astonishing fifty-year career, V.S. Naipaul's writing has been characterized by a commitment to truth that gives his work a unique luminosity and brilliance. In "A Writer's People" he brings unmatched clarity and rich experience to an exploration of the ways we think, see and feel. The range of this extraordinary book reflects an intellect deeply engaged with the challenges of assimilation faced by the 'serious traveller', one for whom there can be no single world view. Naipaul writes about the classical world what we have retained from it, what we have forgotten and the more recent past. Figures as diverse as Mahatma Gandhi, Derek Walcott and Gustave Flaubert come under his compassionate scrutiny, as do his own early years in Trinidad, the silences in his family history and the roles played by Anthony Powell and Francis Wyndham in his first encounters with literary culture. Part meditation, part remembrance, as elegant as it is revelatory, "A Writer's People" is a privileged insight, full of gentleness, humour and feeling, into the mind of one of our greatest writers.  Medium Trade Paperback Medium Trade Paperback. As New/. . 397 pages. Multiple copies of this title available. This book is an unread copy. Covers have no creasing or wear. Spine is uncreased. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. Murder, Love and politics in Civil War America. On the last, cold Sunday of February 1859, Daniel Sickles shot his wife's lover in Washington's Lafayette Square, just across from the White House ...this is the story of that killing and its repercussions. Charming and ambitious, Dan Sickles literally got away with murder. His protector was none other than the President himself, the ageing James Buchanan; his political friends quickly gathered round; and Sickles was acquitted. His trial is described with all Thomas Keneally's powers of dash and drama, against a backdrop of double-dealing, intrigue and 'the slavery question'. Enslaved, in her turn, by the hypocrisy of nineteenth-century society, his wife was shunned and thereafter banned from public life. Sickles, meanwhile, was free to accept favours and patronage. He raised a regiment for the Union, and went on to become a general in the army, rising to the rank of brigadier-general and commanding a flank at the Battle of Gettysburg - at which he lost a leg, which he put into the military museum in Washington where he would take friends to visit it. Amis and Son: Two Literary Generations
Powell, Neil
ISBN: 9781405054621

Hardcover Hardcover. As New/New. First Edition. 428 pages. Multiple copies of this title available. This book is an unread copy. Boards have no wear, rubbing or soiling. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. Two of the most successful British novelists of the last fifty years, Kingsley and Martin Amis are both known for their savage wit and their indifference to causing controversy. In his critical biography, Neil Powell looks at the careers of these two very divisive, and hugely talented writers: how they were formed by their upbringings, developed as writers and in turn how they affected literature, and each other. He examines how success (which is the title one of Martin Amis' novels) affected their relationship, and themselves as writers (Kingsley: "Martin's spending a year abroad for tax purposes. 29, he is. Little shit."). Through this we see what it has meant to be a man, and a writer, (and, most importantly, a comic writer) in Britain over the last sixty years, following Kinglsey from jazz-loving iconoclast to Thatcher-loving Tory and Martin from wild young man of letters to God knows what.
