Hardcover (Laminated Illustrated Boards) Hardcover (Laminated Illustrated Boards). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: Photographic. First Edition. 208 pages, Bound in photographic hardcover binding, showing no damage, and internally clean, without damage and without annotations. This book is a souvenir of the Jewish Museum of Australia. It is the only museum in the world that explores and celebrates what is to be Jewish and Australian. It is the only Jewish Museum of Australia distinct from a Holocaust Museum. It is not a synagogue, or a theatre, not a lecture hall a research centre, it's not an antique dealers showroom or a vault for storing the community jewels, nor is it simply an empty white cube, so often invoked as the site for modern art. In many respects it is all of the above. It is where many disciplines collaborate to re-present the Jewish community to itself and beyond" Size: 4to 9" - 12" tall. Multiculturalism: the Changing Australian Paradigm (multilingual matters: 16)
Foster, Lois & Stockley, David,
ISBN: 0905028376
Multilingual Matters Ltd, Clevedon, Avon, England, 1984. First Edition
Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. First Edition. VIII, 150 pages, includes bibliography, index. The original dust jacket is lightly sunned on the front panel. There is a gift inscription dated 1987 on the front endpage. The book came from the estate of Marta Rado, a linguist at Latrobe University. Given that the authors are senior lecturers in education at Latrobe University, it is quite possible that this book was given by them to Marta. This book analyses the career of the concept of multiculturalism and the policies which have been associated with that concept in Australia. The central task is the development of a theoretical framework which has the power to generate understandings of such critical issues as the role of the State in shaping multiculturalism and the use of multiculturalism as an instrument of social control. Beginning with a systematic examination of the history of Australian immigration policies from 1945 to 1972, the book then proceeds to a more detailed analysis of the emergence and institutionalisation of the concept of multiculturalism in the 1970s and 1980s. There follows a series of case studies in media, education, and the law which illustrate dilemmas operating in the conceptualisation and policy implementation of multiculturalism. The book is built around a theoretical framework which uses concepts from a sociology of knowledge in the sociology of culture including construction of public knowledge, ideology, hegemony, systems management and class relationships. Applying this framework to the strain context leads us to conclude that a paradigmatic shift towards a notion of "beyond multiculturalism" is needed. The final chapter presents a preliminary sketch of what might be involved in moving "beyond multiculturalism". -- rear panel blurb Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.
