The 1922 British Empire Settlement Act detailed a migration scheme in which Britain and Australia would share the costs of migrants’ passages, settlement schemes and associated public works. Western Australia had proposed what became known as the Group Settlement Scheme. Settlers were to work in groups of 20 to develop a number of dairy farms and be paid for their work. Later each would take on a farm when it was ready for dairying. Western Australia undertook to settle 6,000 families on farms and take 75,000 immigrants. £1,000 was the estimated cost of developing each farm. The Group Settlement Scheme began in 1921 with groups in the Manjimup district, followed by others between Busselton and Augusta, at Denmark, Northcliffe and the Peel Estate south of Perth. Contested Country: A History of the Northcliffe Area, Western Australia

All items are tracked and details are available on request. . Whose country is Australia? And who decides how the land should be managed? In exploring such fundamental questions, involving divergent views on Aboriginal land rights, environmental issues and, in particular, the future of Australian forests, Patricia and Ian Crawford argue that differing attitudes to the land underlie many of the current divisions between Aboriginal and European, city and country. This book focuses on the area surrounding Northcliffe, a small Western Australian country town deep in the cool, rainy karri country and coastal plains of the lower South West. But Northcliffe is presented as a microcosm of Australian society, so this is essentially an Australian story, one in which the authors seek to understand the land, the conflicting views over its use, and the way people have sought to shape it to their own purposes, whether hunting and gathering, droving, dairy farming, forestry or conservation. This book has grown out of the author's close personal involvement with the region and its people, and their concern for the preservation of one of the most botanically diverse areas in Australia. Kew Cottages: The World of Dolly Stainer
Judge, Cliff & van Brummelen, Fran,
ISBN: 9780867863246
Spectrum Publications, Melbourne, 2002. First Edition
Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Very Good Condition/. First Edition. First Impression . Size: 8vo Octavo (standard book size). 226 pages. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. No foxing in this copy. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. This book is available and ready to be shipped from our local warehouse. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight.. At four years of age Dolly Stainer was admitted to Kew Cottages, an institution for the intellectually disabled situated in suburban Melbourne. The Cottages were Dolly's home for the next seventy-five years. Dolly was unable to read or write but she like to talk. In her old age she co-operated in the making of a series of tape recordings about her life. Kew Cottages: The World of Dolly Stainer is based on these recordings and places them in the context of the wider Cottages' history. Dolly's story is primarily a picture of life at the coalface. It is a story about the staff and other residents of the institution who entered Dolly's world and helped form her unique personality and independent spirit. In every sense Dolly was a victim, but the authors of this book are at pains not to write the sort of revisionist history that focuses only on victimhood. Rather they show that in spite of everything Dolly grew to be a loving, hard-working and moral human being, no less adequate than the rest of us. This fact precipitates a truth which is seldom recognised, namely, that institutions possess similar ingredients to society itself. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram.
