THE EQUATORIAL GLACIERS OF NEW GUINEA Results of the 1971-1973 Australian Universities' Expeditions to Irian Jaya : Survey, Glaciology, Meteorology, Biology and Palaeoenvironments.

ISBN: 9061910129
A. A. Balkema Rotterdam 1976 1st Edition
Hardcover With many illustrations, photographs and maps including 3 folding maps in a pocket at the rear of the book, previous owners name on front endpaper, the spine of the dustjacket is a little sun faded otherwise a fine copy in very good dustjacket. From the dustjacket; This book presents the final results of the glaciology, meteorology, geomorphology and biology that have resulted from two multi-disciplinary scientific expeditions to the Jaya mountains (Carstensz mountains) of Irian Jaya (West Irian). The mountains are the highest (4,884 m) in New Guinea and Southeast Asia and possess the only icefields and valley glaciers totaling 8 km in the area. They also retain the best record of ice movements in the past of New Guinea. The fauna and flora are very specialized for the alpine environments and very poorly known. The expeditions from December 1971 to March 1972, and January 1973 to February 1973 provided the first accurate glacier survey and contributed to the glacier programme of the International Hydrological Decade. The geomorphology and palaeobotany revealed a complex pattern of ice movements over the past 15,000 years, including the best evidence in the tropics for substantial glacial changes in the last 30,000 years. The biology established many new locality records and extensions of rangefor the flora and fauna and included an ecological survey of the vegetation and of the remarkable algal communities growing on the ice. A preliminary investigation of a hunter's rock shelter at 3,000 m (the highest archaeological site in New Guinea and the only one in Irian Jaya) shows that man has been visiting the mountains for the last 5,500 years. ; 235 x 160mm; xii, 244 pages Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
