A-10 Thunderbolt II Units of Operation Enduring Freedom, 2002-07
Wetzel, Gary
ISBN: 9781780963044
Osprey Pub Co  2013
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM98. In the early 1970s, the USAF, still fresh in the mire of the Vietnam War, began the search for a more effective aircraft to conduct the CAS mission. With aircraft losses climbing, the need for an aircraft that could withstand punishment as well as deliver it was unmistakable. The A-10 was never a favourite amongst the USAF's senior staff, and prior to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 they had attempted to transfer the aircraft to the US Army and Marine Corps. Everything changed when Operation Desert Storm began, as the A-10 quickly showed what it was capable of. Reprieved from premature retirement, the A-10 would see combat in the Balkans during the mid-1990s and over Iraq in Operations Northern Watch and Southern Watch until Operation Iraqi Freedom began in 2003. Following the 11 September 2001 attacks in the United States, the Bush administration responded with the instigation of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in October 2001. A-10 aircraft first entered the fray during Operation Anaconda in March 2002, flying first from an airfield in Pakistan and then from Bagram AB in Afghanistan. During Anaconda four A-10s flying from Pakistan provided 21 straight hours of FAC (A)/CAS coverage. Since then the flexibility of the A-10 has persisted, with units moving through airfields in Afghanistan under AEF deployments. This ongoing commitment has seen active duty, Reserve and Air National Guard squadrons rotating through Bagram and Kandahar airfields in support of Coalition forces in-theatre. The premier CAS aircraft in Afghanistan, the once disposable A-10 has become indispensable. With new upgrades, the 'digital' A-10C has seen its arsenal expanded to include the latest generation of ordnance. The untold story of the A-10 in Enduring Freedom will be explored and presented as never before through first hand interviews and photography from those involved, along with official military archives.   As New

AH-64 Apache Units of Operations Enduring Freedom & Iraqi Freedom
Bernstein, Jonathan
ISBN: 9781841768489
Osprey Pub Co  2005
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM57. After the attacks on 11 September 2001, Apache units made significant contributions to the Coalition campaign against Taliban and al-Qaeda forces in Afghanistan. Functioning as the 'killer' part of US Army Hunter-killer teams, Apaches sought out and brought overwhelming firepower to bear on Taliban and al-Qaeda forces, as well as providing direct support to Coalition troops on the ground. Apaches spearheaded the advance of the 3rd Infantry and the 101st airborne divisions into Iraq, engaging in some of the heaviest fighting along the western axis of advance. Weather and enemy fire took a heavy toll on Apaches operating in Western Iraq, but the resilience and flexibility of the Apache was central to the success of this campaign.   As New

Attack Of The Drones: A History Of Unmanned Aerial Combat
Yenne, Bill
ISBN: 0760318255
Zenith Press Osceola, Wisconsin, U.S.A. 2004
Soft Cover New book, 127 pages, 162 photos mostly in colour. Slight shelf wear to cover. On November 4, 2002, an MQ-1B Predator unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) took out an al-Qaeda SUV with an AGM-114 Hellfire air attack missile 100 miles east of the Yemeni capital of San'a. This marked a turning point in military history. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) had taken the offensive, and were now performing as unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). But this attack was not the first use of a UAV in combat. The idea and technology of unmanned aircraft began with vehicles such as the Kettering Bug of World War I, and evolved through the first generation cruise missiles during World War II and the decade following. This book chronicles the evolution of unmanned, remotely piloted reconnaissance aircraft to their modern use in offensive combat operations.  Very Good

AV-8B Harrier II Units of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm
Nordeen, Lon
ISBN: 9781849084444
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM90. In the 1970s the USMC bought the AV-8A Harrier from the UK to test V/STOL concepts for close air support. A successful funding battle was subsequently fought in the 1980s to secure military, political and economic support to expand this concept to develop and field the second generation AV-8B Harrier II from the late 1980s onward. The AV-8B was, and still is, the only tactical aircraft that could deploy with Marine forces on amphibious assault ships and provide air cover and close air support separate from large deck aircraft carriers. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, a coalition of nations launched Operation Desert Shield in order to defend Saudi Arabia. The Harrier II was among the first tactical air assets to be deployed to the region to support ground forces in their efforts to halt the advance of Iraqi forces at the border with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. During Operation Desert Storm, the five units flying the AV-8B in-theatre became some of the top tactical squadrons of choice by air mission planners for allied battlefield preparation and close air support. This was due to the AV-8B's capabilities, proximity to the battle zone and the proven abilities of Marine pilots and forward air controllers, who were closely integrated with ground forces and knew their business so well. The untold story of the AV-8B in this conflict is vividly brought to life by the author through firsthand accounts and period photography sourced from those that were there, as well as official archives. This is planned to be the first of three volumes on USMC Harrier IIs in combat, with follow-on titles covering the jet's operations in Iraq in 2003-08 and Afghanistan in 2001-2009.   As New

Harpia Publishing  2014
Soft Cover New book, 256 pages with 25 black & white pictures, 107 colour pictures, 5 maps and 65 artworks and drawings. No modern air force would contemplate a critical air operation without the involvement of some kind of airborne early warning component. For the first time, Harpia Publishing presents the full history of the airborne early warning mission and its various aircraft, from these first tentative steps in World War II up to the present day, and the use of AEW and control (AEW&C) platforms as a familiar ‘force multiplier’ in modern air warfare. Carrier Aviation in the 21st Century - Aircraft carriers and their units in Detail
Newdick, Thomas
ISBN: 9780997309225
Harpia Publishing  2018
Soft Cover New book, 256 pages with 153 colour pictures, 43 tables and 25 drawings. The modern aircraft carrier is without doubt one of the most exciting and hazardous operating environments in the field of warfare. The ‘flattop’ is a symbol of global military power without parallel, and it remains a capability beyond reach of all but the most well equipped navies. With the detail, precision and accuracy expected of Harpia Publishing, this latest volume provides a force report of the various air components and associated vessels fielded by those select nations that field fixed-wing-capable aircraft carriers. While the United States maintains a carrier fleet the size of which is almost incomparable to that of its rivals, the coverage of this book also extends to the smaller nations that only possess a single carrier: Brazil, France, Russia and Spain. Meanwhile, full coverage is given over to the navies that are in the process of expanding their burgeoning carrier aviation capabilities, through the introduction of new, indigenously designed carriers and aircraft, namely the Asia-Pacific rivals China and India. Within Europe, chapters are devoted to Italy, currently with two carriers in commission, and the United Kingdom, which will make a historic return to carrier aviation this year. Since the scope of this volume extends to navies operating any carrier that routinely embarks fixed-wing air power, US Navy amphibious assault ships and US Marine Corps aviation assets are also included. Drawing upon a cadre of authors who are experts in their field, Carrier Aviation in the 21st Century continues Harpia’s reputation for providing unprecedented detail and extensive technical specifications, as well as detailing the structure of all the air arms and the individual units that currently embark on board carriers. Illustrations include specially commissioned artworks and diagrams to help illustrate how carrier air power remains an essential element of modern warfare.  As New

EMB-312 Tucano - Brazil's Turboprop Success Story
Moralez, Joao Paulo Zeitoun
ISBN: 9780997309232
Harpia Publishing  2018
Soft Cover New book, 256 pages with four black & white, 132 colour pictures, 17 tables and 84 drawings. Brazil’s turboprop success story is set to become the definitive English-language reference work on this revolutionary Latin American aerospace product. Written by an expert in the field, this book recounts the story of Embraer’s EMB-312 turboprop trainer, the first aircraft in its class to offer a cockpit and controls equivalent to its fighter contemporaries, as well enough power to match the high-speed manoeuvres of comparable jet trainers. Cheap to fly, capable of operating from unprepared runways and with limited maintenance requirements, the Tucano was Embraer’s first design to be built under license outside Brazil, and more than 660 units were produced for service in 16 countries, seven of which have taken it into combat. Although it is best known as a trainer, this remarkable aircraft has also provided front-line air defence in countries including Paraguay and Honduras. After almost 35 years of service, it remains in widespread use today. This lavishly illustrated story of the first-generation Tucano includes accounts of Embraer’s path to global success, service of the EMB-312 in its native Brazil, including with the air force’s display team, licence production for the Royal Air Force and for export as the Shorts Tucano, and a detailed breakdown of every worldwide operator, past and present. Also included is the story of how the EMB-312 began its evolution towards the EMB-314 Super Tucano, which Harpia will cover in a separate book at a future date. Appendices, in typically thorough Harpia style, include a four-view drawing and a full inventory of EMB-312 units and insignia. With the level of accuracy and insight familiar to Harpia’s regular readers, this unique aircraft profile also includes specifications, and details of training syllabuses, upgrades, avionics and weapons.  As New

After years in planning and development, the U.S. Air Force announced plans to purchase more than 600 F-22 Raptors in 1991. Cutbacks in 1993 reduced the number to 442. With the onset of the Obama Administration, Raptor production was capped at 187 units. As challenges to U.S. global leadership mount, however, the Raptor's capabilities will face increasing demand. Illustrated with 174 photographs plus color profiles and detailed line drawings.  As New

Iraqi Air Power Reborn: The Iraqi Air Arms Since 2004
Delalande, Arnaud
ISBN: 9780985455477
Harpia Publishing  2016
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages with 51 colour and 5 black & white pictures, 33 tables and one map. Iraqi Air Power Reborn provides the most authoritative account of the Iraqi air arms in the years following Operation Iraqi Freedom. In the space of over a decade since Harpia Publishing presented its groundbreaking and ever-popular Iraqi Fighters, the Iraqi Air Force has undergone an unprecedented transformation. Having been almost entirely decimated by coalition air strikes in 2003, and during the insurgency that followed, Baghdad has set about rebuilding its air power from scratch. This book summarises the history of the Iraqi Air Force and its various incarnations until 2003 before detailing the efforts to establish a new-look Air Force, which began with training formations, before adding transport and reconnaissance squadrons, and finally attack and fighter squadrons. Coverage also extends to Iraqi Army Aviation, and its various transport, special operations, armed reconnaissance and attack squadrons, as well as the latest air operations against the so-called Islamic State.  As New

IRIAF 2010: The Modern Iranian Air Force
Cooper,Tom; Taghvaee, Babak; Devlin, Liam
ISBN: 9780982553930
Harpia Publishing  2010
Soft Cover New book, 160 pages, with 124 high quality colour pictures and 1 map. This richly illustrated book describes the current organisation and equipment of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF). Drawing on a wide range of digital photographs, IRIAF 2010 presents all types of combat, transport and training aircraft, as well as helicopters, currently operated by the IRIAF, many of which are supported by captions detailing individual aircraft histories. Following a summary of the air force’s development since its early days in the 1920s, the centrepiece of this volume are 12 chapters that cover all major IRIAF bases and flying units stationed there, as well as a summary of the order of battle, in which all units are also represented in the form of patches worn by their pilots. Covering an often under-reported and misinterpreted topic, and one that is directly influential in the current standoff between Iran, the US and Israel, this book is a unique reference source for scholars and enthusiast alike.   As New
