249 At War: The Authorised History of the RAF's Top-Scoring Fighter Squadron of WWII
Cull, Brian
ISBN: 1898697493
Grub Street the Basement United Kingdom 1997
Hard Cover New book, some shelf wear to cover, 292 pages. With many, many illustrious names amongst its roll of honour, this exciting history of what is arguably the RAF's foremost fighting squadron is long overdue. Formed in May 1940, its pilots - including Ginger Neil and J.B. Nicolson who won Fighter Command's only VC of the war - saw distinguished action in the Battle of Britain. Next to Malta, where many nationalities - American, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian especially - participated in the tremendous struggle for the island, initially on Hurricanes and later on Spitfires. Men like Buzz Buerling and Buck McNair, Laddie, Lucas and Stan Grant fought here with courage. The Squadron then moved to Italy where it participated in fighter-bomber attacks with Spitfires and Mustangs over the Balkans until the end of the war. This book then covers the Squadron's essential post WWII activities from its base in the Middle East on Tempests, Vampires and Venoms - flying with distinction from Cypress in the Suez conflict in 1956 and from Adem over Oman in 1957, before converting to Canberra Bombers as part of the Middle East Strike Wing. Disbanded in 1969, its memory lives on brightly in the annals of the RAF.  As New/Very Good

9th Air Force: American Tactical Aviation in the ETO 1942-1945
Pons, Gregory
ISBN: 9782352500773
Histoire & Collection  2009
Soft Cover New book, 192 pages, 650 photos. During the preparation of the Normandy Invasion, the American high command realized soon enough that the 8th Air Force, which was wholly committed to strategic bombing, could not undertake the close support of ground units in this major offensive. The keystone of operation 'Overlord' would indeed be mastery of the skies: tactical aviation had to be able to intervene quickly and precisely, and to operate from bases on the Continent. The heavy bombers, as they were dependent on large and permanent airfields, could not be called upon for such tasks. The concept of on-call tactical air support was therefore paramount in the Overlord plans and the 9th Air Force was transferred to England for this purpose. The hundreds of hitherto unpublished photos copied out from the pilots and crews’ albums, and the full-color reconstructions of their flying gear are a unique testimony to the day to day life of 9th Air Force personnel and the missions of combat crews.  As New

A Measureless Peril: America in the Fight for the Atlantic, the Longest Battle of World War II
Snow, Richard
ISBN: 9781416591108
Scribner Book Co.  2010
Hard Cover New book, 353 pages. Of all the threats that faced his country in World War II, Winston Churchill said, just one really scared him—what he called the "measureless peril" of the German U-boat campaign. In that global conflagration, only one battle - the struggle for the Atlantic - lasted from the very first hours of the conflict to its final day. Hitler knew that victory depended on controlling the sea-lanes where American food and fuel and weapons flowed to the Allies. At the start, U-boats patrolled a few miles off the eastern seaboard, savagely attacking scores of defenseless passenger ships and merchant vessels while hastily converted American cabin cruisers and fishing boats vainly tried to stop them. Before long, though, the United States was ramping up what would be the greatest production of naval vessels the world had ever known. Then the battle became a thrilling cat-and-mouse game between the quickly built U.S. warships and the ever-more cunning and lethal U-boats. The historian Richard Snow captures all the drama of the merciless contest at every level, from the doomed sailors on an American freighter defying a German cruiser, to the amazing Allied attempts to break the German naval codes, to Winston Churchill pressing Franklin Roosevelt to join the war months before Pearl Harbor (and FDR’s shrewd attempts to fight the battle alongside Britain while still appearing to keep out of it). Inspired by the collection of letters that his father sent his mother from the destroyer escort he served aboard, Snow brings to life the longest continuous battle in modern times. With its vibrant prose and fast-paced action, A Measureless Peril is an immensely satisfying account that belongs on the small shelf of the finest histories ever written about World War II.  As New/Very Good

Albert Kesselring: Leadership - Strategy - Conflict
Battistelli, Pier
ISBN: 9781849087353
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 64 pages, CMD27. Although he is mostly remembered for his part in the campaign in Italy from 1943 to 1945, Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring was also chief of staff of the Luftwaffe in 1936-37, playing a crucial role in the shaping of the service for the coming war. As commander of Luftflotte 1 in Poland and Luftflotte 2 in France and the Low Countries, he was responsible for supporting the armoured spearheads of the German Army as they undertook their Blitzkrieg campaigns. With the Fall of France, the Battle of Britain began and Luftlotte 2 was the main force in the air attack against the British air defences, with Kesselring planning many raids. Following the war Kesselring was tried and convicted of war crimes following a number of massacres of civilians in Italy. He was sentenced to death, later commuted to life imprisonment before being released on the grounds of ill health in October 1952. Here Pier Paolo Battistelli provides a detailed study of one of the most famous German commanders of World War II.  As New

Battle Group: German Kampfgruppen Action Of World War II
Lucas, James Sidney; Lucas, James; Caesar, Kurt
ISBN: 1898800081
Rigel Publishing United Kingdom 2004
Hard Cover New book, 192 pages. The German Army of the Second World War sought to fight and win swift, decisive victories in a succession of short campaigns - blitzkrieg, or lighning war. Flexibility was as essential as the will to win. Battle groups - or shock troops - were created from miscellaneous, and often disparate, military units to undertake a specific local operation; it was the army's skill in combining superior numbers, aggressive tactics and the battle groups commander's ability to exploit the changing situation on the ground which brought success on every battlefield.  As New/As New

Grub Street the Basement United Kingdom 2001

Six stalemated British divisions redeploy to join the American attack. The ensuing battle involves infantry, tanks and artillery working together. The battle plans, which had seemed clear cut and achievable, during the battle seem a nightmarish botch to the fightened men who are fighting. Betraying Hitler: The Story of Fritz Kolbe, the Most Important Spy of the Second World War
Delattre, Lucas
ISBN: 1843543869
Atlantic Books  2005
Hard Cover New book, 308 pages. During the Second World War Fritze Kolbe worked as a Foreign Ministry official in Germany. He hated the Nazi regime and in an attempt to aid its demise, he offered to spy for the allied forces. The Americans assigned him the code name 'George Wood' and between 1943 and 1945, at great risk to his life, he smuggled more than 1,600 top secret Nazi documents - from details of military tactics to reports on military tactics to reports on missile developments and plans to deport jews to death camps. Miraculously escaping detection by the Gestapo, he continued to work as an informer until the end of the war, influencing the outcome of a number of conflicts. But when the war ended, Kolbe's efforts were not officially recognised by the Allies. Denied a Visa to the US, he was ostracised by his colleagues at the German Foreign Ministry and branded a traitor. He later moved to Switzerland, dying on obscurity in 1971. His extraordinary story has remained hidden until 2001 when the CIA declassified over 1000 documents detailing Kolbe's exploits, a man declared by CIA director Richard Helms to have 'delivered the most important information ever supplied by an agent working for the Allies'.   As New/Very Good

Headline Book Publishing Ltd London, United Kingdom 2006
Hard Cover New book, 350 pages. From 1939 to 1945 the Battle of the Atlantic raged across the trecherous wastes of the Arctic Ocean. Churchill and America
Gilbert, Martin
ISBN: 0743259920
Free Press  2005
Hard Cover New book, 501 pages. Slight shelf wear to jacket. This book tells the intensely human story of Winston Churchill's profound connection to America, a relationship that resulted in an Anglo-American alliance that has stood at the center of international relations for more than a century. Churchill's historic alliance with Franklin Roosevelt during WW2 is brilliantly portrayed here with much new material, as are his subsequent ties with President Truman, which contributed to the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan. In this book, Gilbert explores how Chrchill's intense rapport with America resulted in no less than the liberation of Europe and the preservation of European Democracy, it also set the stage for the ongoing relationship that has survived into the 21st century.   As New/Very Good
