Nathaniel's Nutmeg: How One Man's Courage Change the Course of History
Milton, Giles,
ISBN: 0340696761
Sceptre, London, 1999. Reprint
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. Illustrator: Photographic and Illustrations. Reprint. Acknowledgements, list of illustrations and maps, bibliography and index. Throughout the text there are black-and-white illustrations and maps. Colour illustrated paperback binding with red and black coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. In December 1616 the English ship the Swan, under the captainship of Nathaniel Courthope, reached the now forgotten Indonesian of Run. It is on this island that the fragrant spice nutmeg was grown (along with other aromatic spices), and Courthope's job was to get the people of the island to grant to England a monopoly of the island's production of the spice; much to the vexation of the Dutch, who, at that time, had Europe's monopoly of the spice. The book is written based on contemporary accounts, and it details the beginning of the spice trade and of the exploitation that gathered pace in the 17th century. Minor creasing of the book corners and rubbing of the book edges and panels. Uniform tanning of the text block edges and pages with previous owners name to the top right hand corner of the half title page. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. 388 pages,.
