The story of Leo Koretz, who in the early part of the 1920s in Chicago, Illinois, enacted one of the largest swindles / Ponzi schemes in American history. He convinced hundreds of people to invest in non-existent timberlands and oil wells in Panama 30 odd million dollars or so (in today's money $400 million), and, when the scheme fell apart, fled to Canada. He was pursued to Canada by the Cook County state's attorney, and, after 12 months was found in Halifax and extradited back to Chicago. Upon arriving in Chicago a salacious court hearing was held with all the grubby details of political machinations and corruption were exposed; Leo Kratez's mysterious death in a Chicago prison was just the end to a to-bizarre-to-believe-life. Softening of the back strip edges with a little rubbing of the book corners and lower book edges. A little age toning of the text block edges and pages. The major damage to the book has been moisture application to the first few pages, which has caused a bumping as of the pages more felt than seen. Creasing of the dustwrapper edges and rubbing of the panels. Water staining to the verso. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. [7], VIII - X, [5], 4 - 336, [2] pages,.
