By the time the trial began, seven months later, the reason for the murder was almost secondary to the the opening to the general public of the salacious nature of the society in which both men moved in. Standford White was a known roué, who preyed upon the pretty young showgirls, and, one of the young showgirls that he had an affair with was Harry Thaw's wife – Evelyn Nesbit. What was unclear was the motive – as the affair between Evelyn and Standford White had been years prior to the marriage, and that Harry Thaw was aware of the affair. But, many thousands of dollars was spent defending and prosecuting Harry Thaw, and both he and his wife's reputations were damaged: – Harry's violence towards people, including his wife, and Evelyn's promiscuity were outed in court. The first jury was unable to make a unanimous decision, and the second jury found Harry Thaw guilty by reason of insanity. The author follows the main protagonists up to the time of their deaths.
