A Child's World; A Social History of English Childhood 1800 - 1914
Walvin, James,
ISBN: 0140223894

Softcover Softcover. Good Condition/. First Edition. acknowledgements, introduction by author, appendix statutes relating to children, select bibliography, notes and index. Colour illustrated card cover with brown and black coloured titles to the front panel and black and white coloured titles to the backstrip. "During the 19th century more than a third of the English population was 14 or under. Put it more graphically; there was no escaping from children. Their noise and play were constant feature of life, they cluttered up streets and houses and haunted historical documentation of the time. At one end of the spectrum they underpinned the Victorian ideal of the family, at the other, they provided cheap, pliable labour for the Industrial Revolution. There were enormous differences between children of different classes, ages, sexes and localities, but even under the harshest conditions children managed to inherit, create and pass on their own stories, songs, street-games and mythologies." -- from the rear panel blurb. This is a study of children of the 19th century. Creasing to the book corners and reading creases to the backstrip. Some marks to the book panels with previous owners name sticker to the top right-hand corner of the front panel. Browning of the textblock edges and pages.
