Coming Into Being Among Australian Aboriginals: A Study of the Procreative Beliefs of the Native Tribes of Australia
Montagu Ashley,
ISBN: 0710079338
Routledge & Kegan Paul, London and Boston, 1974. Revised and Expanded
Hardcover (Original Cloth) Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. Revised and Expanded. Foreword By Bronislaw Malinowski, Preface to the second edition, preface to the first edition, list of figures, introduction by the author, bibliography and index. The text is illustrated for figures. Chocolate brown coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Photographic dustwrapper with brown and white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. This revised and expanded second edition, again tackles the question of procreation within the aboriginal tribes. As Ernest Jones said of the first edition (from the rear panel of the dustwrapper) " ... by far the most valuable study among the large literature that has accumulated over the vexed question of whether Australian aborigines are really ignorant of the physiological effects of procreation and whether they are "so to speak" pretending for social and religious reasons to be thus ignorant". This landmark study was first published in 1937, and, this second edition, takes into account later fieldwork and new information that became available on the subject. A little softening and fading of the back strip edges with rubbing of the book corners. Very light age toning of the text block edges and pages. Some sunning, quite noticeable, to the rear end pages. Minor creasing of the dustwrapper edges and rubbing of the panels. Fading to the back strip. Second Edition. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. [8], X - XL, 426, [2] pages,. This congregation established just five years after the birth of Melbourne, was indeed to prove enduring. The foundation of Victorian Jewish life was to become its cornerstone. Its social contribution extends far beyond its membership to Australian society and the Jewish world as a whole. This book debunks the myth that Orthodox Judaism in Australia is a 20th-century phenomenon. Nevertheless, fluctuations in fortunes -- social, religious and economic, reflecting past and contemporary changes in surrounding society -- are stark reminders of the fragility of minority achievements in the shadow of a dominating ethos. The Enduring Remnant; The First 150 Years of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, 1841-1991
Aron, Joseph; Arndt, Judy,
ISBN: 0522844790
Melbourne University Press, Carlton, Victoria, 1992. First Edition
Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Photographic. First Edition. Signed by Both Authors. 1.2 kg; XXVI, 438 pages, indexed, with bibliography, notes on sources, appendix, and glossary. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs, and facsimiles of documents. Colour illustrated dust jacket. The dust jacket has faded on the back strip section, from burnished cedar to a light bamboo; there is no other damage to describe. Signed in the lower right-hand quadrant of the front free end page to both authors. This history provides a series of salutary lessons and a blueprint for the future." -- front fold over blurb. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
