A History of Jerusalem: One City, Three Faiths
Armstrong, Karen,
ISBN: 0002558513
HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, London, 1997. First Edition
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. First Edition. Jerusalem has probably cast more of a spell over the human imagination than any other city in the world. Held by believers to contain the site where Abraham offered up Isaac, the place of the crucifixion of Christ and the rock from which the prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven, Jerusalem has been celebrated and revered for centuries by Jews, Christians and Muslims. Such is the symbolic power of this ancient city that its future status poses a major obstacle to a comprehensive regional peace in the Middle East. This work traces the turbulent history of Jerusalem from the prehistoric era, the Biblical period, Jerusalem under the Byzantines, Arabs, Ottomans, British, Jordanians and since, 1967, the Israelis. It examines its political and cultural role through history, its personalities, art, architecture and the conflicts which have beset it for more than 2000 years. Clean copy, no damage, no enclosures. No annotations. Colour illustrated cover, book is illustrated with photographs and maps in the text, and a section of colour plates. Full number line. Size: Trade Paperback. XX, 476 pages. A history of vicarages in the Middle Ages.
Hartridge, R A R,
Barnes & Noble, New York, 1968. Reprint
Hardcover (Original Cloth) Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Reprint. Very slight rubbing of the cloth on the left-hand side of the front panel, age toning of the top edge of the text block, no other damage to describe. VIII, 273 pages, with appendices, bibliography, and index. Some tables reproduced throughout the text. "The book is not a complete history of vicarages in all countries in the obedience of the Popes in the Middle Ages, but rather a study centred intensively on our own country and spreading over the neighbouring lands with diminishing intensity. The reader will find that the Swiss and German examples are taken from one or two documents that offer corroborative testimony of great value, but the descriptions of French conditions are founded on a considerable mass of documents. Italian conditions which, as I understand, have peculiar characteristics, have not, as yet, found anyplace at all in my studies." Page VII Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.
