Coal and the state
Fisher, Chris 1947 ,
ISBN: 0454015399
Methuen, North Ryde, 1987. First Edition
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. First Edition. second-hand copy, no annotations, no damage to describe. In the early 1980s Australia became the largest seaborne exporter of coal in the world. Yet in 1946 the coal mining industry was in the state of chaos, unable to meet even domestic demand. This book investigates the reason for this extraordinary turnaround. Part of the reason lies with government intervention since 1946 which helped achieve an economic, sociological and psychological restructuring of the coalfields and their communities. The book also examines the limits to state control. Although the New South Wales Joint Coal Board acquired and exercised great control, the miners retained effective workplace control, successfully resisted complete proletarianization and were able to use the devices of direct control and bargaining to circumvent and challenge arbitral control. The Tolpuddle Martyrs: Injustice within the Law [original title injustice within the law: a study of the case of the Dorsetshire labourers ]
Evatt, Herbert Vere 1894 1965,

Sydney University Press, Sydney, 2009. Second Edition
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. Second Edition. second-hand copy, no damage to describe, no annotations. This new edition has a new introduction by Geoffrey Robertson. "In his introduction to this new edition of Herbert ("Doc ") Evatt's a brilliant account, Geoffrey Robertson QC points out of the case stood for something different, and something very frightening: that oppression and cruelty do not always fail. Indeed sometimes they succeed beyond the hopes of the oppressors. The labourers suffered no violence "save the extreme and horrible violence of the law itself". The true lesson from the story demonstrates that societies need guarantees to prevent "injustice within the law". Rear panel blurb Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.
