In Penumbria
Gatie, Adrian,
Self Published, North Yorkshire, 1987. First Edition
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: The Author. First Edition. 300 g; 56 pages in original softcover binding. The binding is somewhat rubbed on the edges and corners with loss of colour, but internally the book is clean and free of damage. ""Drawn to situations with raggy edges, to the downside of urban life, Adrian Gatie has photographed the streets since the early seventies, looking for 'whatever'. The legendary American photographer Robert Frank has said that Gatie's photographs 'make clear the pain and sadness of living in his part of the world'. Not all of Gatie's work is dark, however. Much of it is rich in irony and humour and whatever it is that he looks for, his photographs often contain an almost theatrical element that prises the image from its real life setting, creating a separateness which invariably allows for communication without text or caption. His many years working in theatre photography have undoubtedly influenced his ways of seeing and of looking. The photographs in his book In Penumbria deal in uncertainty and ambiguity and in them, through tidal sequencing, we can sense a surreal disquiet and a controlled tension, ready to move on". (Martin Davis) In Penumbria was published in 1987. It is now out of print and has become a collectors item. The accompanying exhibition toured throughout the UK in 1987-88 and the opening paragraphs above are taken from the introduction to that exhibition. Then came exhibitions Nexus (89-90), An Adjustment of Expectations (91-93), Beach Bodies (95-96), Separated Dreams (97) and Our Town (98). Much of Adrian Gatie's work of the '80s was done in collaboration with the Documentary Photography Archive and is in their permanent collection. The Rogowski Collection
Domoney, Antoinette J.,
Leonard Joel, South Yarra, Melbourne, 1998. First Edition
Hardcover (Original Cloth) Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Photographic. First Edition. 1.2 kg; 192 pages, last seven pages blank. 1101 items are listed, where possible with credit to the artist or maker, with a price range indicated of the auctioneer's expectations. The major pieces have an accompanying illustration in colour. Colour illustrated dust jacket. Blue place marker ribbon, which some enterprising person has carefully unwoven for almost a complete length, leaving lots of single threads. Otherwise in very good condition. This auction represented the breaking up of the private collection of a pair of antique dealers who died within 12 months of each other. Their collection featured the best of everything. Delicate, fine, elegant. These words described mostly the arts, and statuary that were offered for sale. My guess is that most of the items that were sold had not been seen for 20 years, and probably will not resurface for sale in Melbourne for at least that long again. Size: 4to 9" - 12" tall.
