On the back of each photograph there is a full description of the photograph in Italian, French, English, and German. At the beginning of the photographic essay, there is a six panel panorama of Naples with a smoking Vesuvius in the background. The photographs are in colour. The photographs have been bound in blue with an elaborate embossed front panel. The embossing is in colour and shows Mount Vesuvius in eruption in the background, in the foreground are sailing ships and around the illustration is gilt and white decoration. White writing to the front cover. This little tourist brochure is in remarkably good condition considering its age. There is bumping to the corners. Wear and rubbing to the edges. The edges of the book are slightly bumped and rubbed. Internally the photographs are clean and crisp and on the back of the cover there has been a black-and-white street map of Naples pasted on. Bumping and some rubbing to the backstrip and to the book corners. Some rubbing along either side of the backstrip and the text block shows a few handling marks and light age toning. Faint foxing to the first few in the last few pages of the text and light age toning of the internal text. Colour illustrated dustwrapper with black and red titles to the front panel and white coloured titles to the backstrip. Chipping in to the dustwrapper corners and backstrip edges. Rubbing and occasional small closed tear to the other dustwrapper edges. Rubbing and foxing to the panels and some brown stains are present to the rear dustwrapper panel. Browning and foxing to the verso of the dustwrapper. Black-and-white illustrations of author to the rear fold over panel. This book has been translated from the Italian by Frances Frenaye. A novel set on the cusp of the unification of Italy in the turbulent 19th century. This momentous occasion are seen through the lives of a miller and his family on the River Po.
