Gargoyles and Grotesques; Paganism in the Medieval Church
Sheridan, Ronald & Ross, Anne,
ISBN: 0821206443
New York Graphic Society, Boston, 1975. First Edition
Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. First Edition. 127 pp., preface, select bibliography, index. Black and white frontispiece. Black and white photographs illustrate the text. Dark blue boards with gilt titles on spine. Signs of shelf wear evident on bottom of the book. Coloured photographic dustwrapper, protected, with white background and black titles on spine, black and white photograph on back panel. Rubbing and slight chipping to the top edge of the dustjacket, no other damage . as for the book itself, there is a small pale mark about 3 inches down on the 1st page of the book. Otherwise clean and without damage. Throughout Europe there are uncounted numbers of gargoyles and grotesques leering down from medieval churches. The reasons for this suggests the authors " stems directly from earlier Pagan beliefs which the church was unable - for its own safety - to fully eradicate, and so allowed to exist side-by-side with orthodox Christian images.". Wainewright The Poisoner; The Confessions of Thomas Griffiths Wainewright
Motion, Andrew,

First Edition. list of illustrations, acknowledgements, foreword, select bibliography and index. Illustrated dustwrapper with brown and green coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. The colourful autobiography/biography of Thomas Griffiths Wainewright, 19th-century painter, writer, dandy and friend to major figures of the Romantic period and poisoner. Convicted of forgery (there was never enough evidence to prove murder) he was sent to the penal colony of Tasmania. He died there in 1847. Using a blend of " .. creative imagination and scholarly sleuthing, Andrew Motion evokes Waine-wright's double life in a tour de force of the biographer's art. Cast in the form of a partly fictionalised "confession" written by the subject himself, buttressed (and sometimes contradicted) by the notes, background essays and other commentary setting out the known-facts, it reveals the man as no straightforward history could do his distinctive voice, his wit and charm, his callousness and unreliability, this pathos and, perhaps, his capacity for murder." -- from the front fold over panel blurb.
