Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece, of a young Napoleon Bonaparte, with a complete and good condition tissue guard. The text is illustrated with 30 contemporary black and white illustrations. At the beginning of the text. There is a 2 page foldout map showing France in 1793. Dark red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt illustration to the lower right-hand corner of the front board and gilt decoration to the boards. A book published in the last years of the 19th century dealing with one of the most extraordinary figures of that century Napoleon Bonaparte. The author has tried to be dispassionate about the man and his time, while placing him in his proper place in history. This book is in good condition for its age. Softening with a little fraying of the backstrip edges and of the book corners which also show some bumping. Rubbing and marking of the book panels and the textblock edges show browning and foxing. Foxing to the endpapers and browning to the internal text. The results of insect activity can be seen along the front fore edge of the front paste-down. The major fault with the book is the block of pages from 169 through two page 215 which have become somewhat loose from the rest of the textblock. The illustration which goes between page 214 and 215 has completely come away from the textblock, and it also has tape residue from a previous owner supporting a small tear to the lower edge. Whilst in Africa, he joined up with General 'Chinese' Gordon's Army and was the last of Gordon's lieutenants to hold out against the Muslim Messiah Mahdi uprising at Waldelai in the late 1880s. When the powers that be back in London learnt of the extent of the uprising they sent H. M. Stanley to rescue Emin Pasha. This book goes into the personality of Emin Pasha, and why it was imperative that the authorties in London to send Stanley to rescue (who, chose an unexplored and dangerous route to get to Emin Pasha, losing the majority of his men through disease and attack by a hostile natives), and then the trek out of the besieged area, fraught as the arrogant Stanley and the Democratic Emin held sway over their own men, and the final death of a gentle and scholarly man. The text is illustrated with numerous small black-and-white illustrations and the occasional full-page illustration by C.H. Percival. Gray coloured textured card cover with black and red coloured titles to the front panel. A small book of poetry from the author dealing with the realities of his life as a serving soldier in the strain Army during World War II and other musings. Creasing to the book corners and rubbing to the book edges, book panels and very heavy rubbing to the backstrip. A few handling marks to the book panels and the internal text is somewhat brown.
