1788: Comprising "A Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay" and "A Complete Account of the Settlement at Port Jackson".
Tench, Watkin; Flannery, Tim (editor).
ISBN: 1875847278
Text Publishing Melbourne 2000
Paperback, very good condition, pages faintly toned, minor edgewear. 276 pp. Watkin Tench stepped ashore at Botany Bay with the First Fleet in January 1788. He was in his late twenties, a captain of the marines, and on the adventure of his life. Insatiably curious, with a natural genius for storytelling, Tench wrote two enthralling accounts of the infant colony (both shortened, edited and introduced here by Tim Flannery). Tench brings to life the legendary figures of Bennelong, Arabanoo and Governor Phillip, and records the voices of convicts trying to make lives in their new country.

A Concise History of Australia [Cambridge Concise Histories].
Macintyre, Stuart.
ISBN: 0521625777
Cambridge University Press (CUP) Melbourne 1999
Paperback small octavo, very good condition, black & white text-photos, minor edgewear. 320 pp. First edition. Australia is the last continent to be settled by Europeans, but it also sustains a people and a culture tens of thousands of years old. For much of the past 200 years the newcomers have sought to replace the old with the new. Describes how they imposed themselves on the land, and how they brought technology, institutions and ideas to make it their own. It relates the advance from penal colony to a prosperous free nation. Illustrates how, in a nation created by waves of newcomers, the search for binding traditions has long been frustrated by the feeling of rootlessness. Now, with the realisation that colonisation began with invasion, present-day Australians are - more than ever before - coming to terms with their past and recognising the need to redefine and reposition Australia in a changing world.
