Albert Speer: His Battle with Truth: His Battle with Truth
Sereny, Gitta
ISBN: 0333645197
London Picador, 1996  1996
8vo hardcover 757pp index, b/w illus. very good. / very good d/w. Albert Speer was Hitler's architect before the Second World War. Through Hitler's great trust in him and Speer's own genius for organisation he became, effectively from 1942 overlord of the entire war economy, making him the second most powerful man in the Third Reich. Sentenced to twenty years imprisonment in Spandau Prison at the Nuremberg Trails, Speer attempted to progress from moral extinction to moral self-education. How he came to terms with his own acts and failures to act and his real culpability in Nazi war crimes are the questions at the centre of this book. The author had access to Speer, his family and friends and his private papers.

Bad Faith : A Forgotten History of Family and Fatherland
Callil, Carmen
ISBN: 0224078720
Jonathan Cape 2006  2006
8vo softcover 640pp very good. The sweeping story of one of history's most despicable villains and conmen - Louis Darquier de Pellepoix, Nazi collaborator and 'Commissioner for Jewish Affairs', who managed the Vichy government's dirty work, 'controlling' its Jewish population. Born into the established, relatively moderate Darquier family ('de Pellepoix' was a later affectation), Louis Darquier proceeded from modest beginnings to dissemble his way to power, continually reinventing himself in conformity with an obsession with racial purity and the latent anti-Semitism of the French Catholic Church. He was the ultimate chancer: always broke, always desperate for attention, social cachet, women and drink. One of the few men to put on weight during the second world war', after it was over he decamped to Spain, never to be brought to justice for having sent thousand of Jewish men, women and children to the camps. Early on in his career he married the alcoholic Myrtle Jones from Tasmania, equally practised in the arts of fantasy and deception, and together they had a child, Anne Darquier, whom they promptly abandoned to grow up in England under an oppressive mantle of silence. Her tragic story of honourable but exhausting ambition is woven through the narrative. In Carmen Callil's masterful and harrowing account, Darquier's ascent to power during the years leading up to the Second World War comes to mirror the rise of French anti-Semitism and the role it played in the horrors that were to follow. It is a portrait of a society as fragmented and desperate as any before the war, trading miserable second-rate philosophies in search of meaning and power, and of how the people of Vichy turned a blind eye to the shameful things being done under their noses. Epic, elegiac and enormously well researched, this is a study in powerlessness, hatred and the role of remembrance, in a world in which man-made horrors challenge the very idea of justice.

Hitler in Vienna, 1907-1913 : Clues to the Future
Jones, J. Sydney
ISBN: 0812828550
New York Stein & March 1983  1983
8vo hardcover 350pp index, b/w illus. very good / good, loose, clipped d/w. From The New York Review of Books: The liveliest of {the recent books on Hitler}, and the one that will probably have the greatest interest for the lay reader, is Sydney Jones's account of Hitler's years in Vienna from 1907 to 1913. It is almost as much a book about the city as one about the young man from the provinces whose artistic ambitions it rebuffed. . . . In creating a sense of the atmosphere of the Austriancapital and contrasting its intellectual excitement and hectic vitality with Hitler's drab and lonely existence, he helps us to understand how his first political ideas--his contempt for the Austrian empire, his pan-Germanism, his loathing of a working class that parroted Marxist slogans, and, above all, his belief that the Jews were the source of all evil--grew out of disappointments suffered and resentments accumulated in a city that must have seemed to him to be heartless, unappreciative of talent, and ultimately degenerate and corrupt.

Hitler's Elite

ISBN: 0715397966
David & Charles 1990  1990
8vo hardcover 320pp index, b/w illus. very good, bookplate on fep. / very good d/w. Adolph Hitler spawned a breed of lesser lights who converted his hates into concentration camps, mass murder and the systematic extermination of the races and social groups he deemed inferior. With them he gave a new meaning to horror. These nineteen members of the Nazi elite were strikingly ordinary, for the most part failures and nonentities. They were ready to follow Hitler because without him they were nothing. "Hitler's Elite" reveals the men who made sure that the theoretical evil poured out by Hitler in Mein Kampf became real beyond all imagining and beyond all norms of human behaviour.Table of ContentsnnHerman Goering - Germany's deadly Falstaff; mass-murderer - Henrich Himmler; Julius Streicher - pornographer and sadist; Ernest Rohen - bully boy of the streets; Rudolf Hess - Palandin extraordinary; Joseph Goebels - Hitler's little mouse general; Brown eminence - Martin Bormann; Alfred Rosenberg - philosopher of the absurd; champagne salesman Ribbentrop; Baldur Von Schirach - misleader of German Youth; Hangman Heydrich; Gorilla Kaltenbrunner; Killer Adolf Eichmann; exterminator Rudolf Hoess; Joseph Kramer - the beast of Belsenj; Ilse Koch - the bitch of Buchenwald; Auschwitz doctor Joseph Mengele; quack doctor Theodor Morell; Otto Skorzeny - soldier of fortune.

Hunting Evil: The Nazi war criminals who escaped and the hunt to bring them to justice
Walters, Guy
ISBN: 0593059921
Bantam Press 30 July 2009  2009
8vo softcover 432pp near fine. Index. Illustrated with photos. AT THE END of the Second World War some of the highest-ranking members of the Nazi party fled from the ruins of the Third Reich. Many are names that have resonated deeply in twentieth-century history – Adolf Eichmann, Josef Mengele, Franz Stangl and Klaus Barbie – not just for the monstrosity of their crimes, but also because of the shadowy nature of their post-war existence, holed up in depths of Latin America, always one step ahead of their pursuers. The nature of their escapes was as gripping as any good thriller. Aided and abetted by Catholic priests in Rome, they travelled down secret escape routes, hiding in foreboding castles high in the Austrian Alps, and were taken in by shady Argentine secret agents. The attempts to bring them to justice are no less dramatic, with vengeful Holocaust survivors, inept politicians, and daring plots to kidnap or assassinate the fugitives. Guy Walters has travelled the world in pursuit of the real account of how the Nazis escaped at the end of the war, and charts the attempts, sometimes successful, to bring them to justice, and what really happened to those that got away. Walters also questions the existence of the ‘Odessa’ organisation, scrutinises the record of Simon Wiesenthal, and reveals the extent to which some Nazi war criminals were able to escape justice by being employed by Allied Intelligence. He has interviewed Nazi hunters and Nazis alike, former intelligence agents, travelled the escape routes themselves, and pored through archives in Germany, Britain, the United States, Austria and Italy to bring this remarkable period of our recent history to dramatic and vivid life.
