In 1629 the Dutch East India Company ship Batavia sales from Holland to the Dutch East Indies she's laden down with the greatest treasure ever to leave the Dutch Republic but, in the middle of the night she founders on an unseen reef off the coast of Western Australia. While the Batavia's captain takes his longboat and sales 2000 miles to get help, his second in charge and a group of 40 mutineers decide to kill the majority of the 220 people surviving, excepting half a dozen women also to service their sexual needs. Thus a reign of terror begins, and all would have been lost except for a soldier, Wiebbe Hayes, who gathered those who were prepared to do anything to survive. This is their story.
