It will assist landowners, and administrators and technical supervisors of towns and mining company operations concerdeds with amenity planting and conservation in the arid and semi-arid zones of the continent. Six chapters deal with conservarion, the principles of soil erosion and its prevention and control in dryland Australia. Other chapters provide an outline of the environment in the arid and semi-arid zones, shade and shelter on the farm and examples of design, the role of trees and shrubs for honey production, chenopod browse plants, factors in the selection and use of tree species, nursery raising, tree establishment and the care of valuable trees in parks and gardens. Some 177 trees and shrubs, mainly native species are described and in most cases, illustrated. Even in the dry country fire control is of considerable importance and this is dealt with in a special chapter. Index.
