Ye, Ting - Xing
ISBN: 0140276971

Spanning thirty-five years, this enthralling memoir chronicles the life of a survivor who has been buffeted by the winds of history.Ting-xing Ye was bom in Shanghai, the fourth child of a factory owner who had his business taken from him. By the age of thirteen, both her parents were dead. Then Ye's family were torn apart andscattered by the Cultural Revolution: as her eldest brother struggled to gain acceptance into the Communist Party and a sister eagerly joined a militia, Ye was subjected to torture and deprivation at the prison farm where she laboured. Her change in fortune came with acceptance into Beijing University. From there, Ye was offered a job in the Chinese Secret Police, but instead took a position as a translator in the Foreign Ministry. In this moving tale of a turbulent life, Ye describes the aftermathof her feudal-style marriage that led to her eventual defection to Canada.
