A Prince of Journalists: The Life and Times of Henri Stefan Opper de Blowitz
Giles, Frank
Faber London 1962 First Edition Octavo- over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Brown Cloth 228 pages., index, 10 illustrations. A very tidy copy in a water damaged dust wrapper (the damages only observable from the underside), slightly edge worn. "From obscure and unpromising beginnings De Blowitz rose to be, the last quarter of last century, the immensely influential correspondent in Paris of The Times. As such he was constantly behind the scenes of European politics, mocked but envied by colleagues and rivals. His lack of inches was compensated for by self-esteem and a powerfully inventive imagination; thus he enjoyed the reputation of being at once one of the best informed man in Europe and one of the biggest embroiderers of facts." A Private Battle
Ryan, Cornelius & Ryan, Katherine Morgan
New English Library London 1979 First British Edition 8vo - up to 9 ¾" tall - Octavo Brown Boards 750 grammes; 448 g, acknowledgements. Yellow coloured endpapers. Photographic dustwapper ( wraparound ) showing a sun set, with white and yellow writing on the front panel and spine. A previous owner has covered the dustwapper and the book in a heavy duty plastic and unfortunately has used monumental amounts of tape to secure the plastic. So without damaging the book, by trying to pry the tape loose, both the book and dustwrapper look to be in reasonable condition. While writing his monumental work " A Bridge Too Far ", Cornelius Ryan was diagnosed with cancer. In this book he gives the parallel race to finish off his novel and to wage battle with cancer, all while keeping it secret from his closest friends and family. A rare look into the psyche of someone given a life sentence and what they did to fight this insidious disease. Cornelius Ryan brings all his journalistic skills into this most personal of narratives. Digital image available upon request. Autobiography Average
