Empty Promises
Rule, Ann
ISBN: 0-7515-3106-5 Time Warner Paperbacks. 2001 12mo Paperback Although the former police officer and FBI consultant is best known for full-length true-crime books, she is also a prolific writer of shorter articles, publishing more than a thousand of them over the past three decades. Many of her shorter pieces have been collected in the ongoing Crime Files series, of which this is volume seven. The ten pieces included here, some of them going back more than 25 years, tell the story of a man whose possessiveness allegedly led him to murder; of unrequited love that led to madness; of a couple of genuinely (almost comically) incompetent femme fatales; of a man who killed for the thrill of it; and other fascinating, unsettling tales. Rule brings the same respect for detail to her short work that is evident in the book-length accounts. She is able to look beyond "just the facts" and penetrate to the heart of the matter, to identify not only the who and the what, but the all-important why. The shortest article here is deeper, and tells us more about the nature of crime, than a whole stack of full-length books written by less talented competitors. Among the very small group of top-notch true-crime writers (Lawrence Schiller, Jack Olsen, and Joe McGinniss, when he gets it right), Rule just may be the best of the bunch. Good

Never to Be Released, Volume 2
Kidd, Paul B.
ISBN: 0-7322-5981-9 HarperCollins Pymble, N.S.W. 1999 First Edition 8vo Paperback Murderers, rapists, psychopaths... In many parts of the world, these sorts of criminals can expect retribution by firing squad, lethal injection, the noose or, more macabrely, the electric chair. In Australia, our courts sentence them to life of incarceration - "never to be released". This recommendation is usually reserved solely for the worst of the worst: the child killers, those who rape and murder in pairs and packs, the serial killers, the mass murderers. But now that list includes a man who attempted to murder a tourist, another who set a little boy alight, and a heroin dealer. In this frank and compelling book, Paul B. Kidd, a respected authority on this gruesome rollcall of humanity, looks at recent cases that have resulted in the handing down of a "never to be released" recommendation or its equivalent, the threads that link Australia's serial killers, and the arguments for and against capital punishment. All the horrific crimes in this book actually happened. Fortunately, all their perpetrators are where they belong - behind bars - "never to be released". Good

Preacher of Death
King, Martin
ISBN: 0-451-18000-3 Signet Books. Ringwood, Victoria, Australia ; New York 1993 12mo Paperback This is the story of the self-professed Son of God, who became the leader of sect known as the "Branch Davidians". Rarely has religious fervour ended so tragically with so much paranoia and annihilation. Martin King is one of the few outsiders who spent time with David Koresh in the Waco compound. In this first-hand account, King tells how Vernon Howell - a ninth-grade drop-out - became David Koresh, leader of a world-wide religious cult which supplied him with new members, money and 20 "wives" aged 12 to 70. The book also reveals the rise of David Koresh through the eyes of ex-cult member, Marc Breault.
