8vo - up to 9 ¾" tall - Octavo Green Cloth 520 g.; VIII, 312 pages, last three pages blank, introduction by Leonard S. Davidow. Black and white illustrated frontispiece, and underneath the illustration of the words " Within a candle box, swayed in red flannel, laid the latest arrival at Roaring Camp ". Green coloured [ faux leather ] boards with self embossed design to the front panel. On the back strip 4 gilt inserts, and each insert has a small illustration. There is also 3 inserts of maroon colour and within 2 of those maroon coloured inserts are gilt titles, the third insert has the number 4 in Roman numerals. Bumping and rubbing to the head and to the heel of the back strip and to the book corners. There is a little fraying of the top rear corner. There is some rubbing to the back strip region of the book and a little dulling of the colour of the book boards. Browning to the text block edge, worse to the top edge. Offset tanning to the endpapers and there was general age related browning of the internal pages. 23 short stories from one of the earliest writers of fiction of the American West. Francis Bret Harte was born in 1839 and left for California, then the vast unknown, when he was 15 and a lot of his repertoire of stories came following a period of time when he lived in a rollicking roaring " wild west".
