  The Last Hero
Forbath, Peter
ISBN: 0-7493-0149-X
Mandarin U.K. 1994
12mo - 6¾" - 7¾" Tall Paperback From Publishers Weekly Historical adventure in the grand style, this is a richly fictionalized account of what was possibly explorer Stanley's greatest exploit: the military rescue of Emin Pasha, mysterious and beleaguered governor of Britain's only province in central Africa to resist the Mahdi and his dervish hordes after the fall of Khartoum in 1885. Thirsting to avenge the death of General Gordon and to restore its imperial honor, Britain chooses Stanley as the obvious, indeed the only man for the job. The wily, ruthless and indomitable Stanley eschews the easiest route of access and chooses the most arduous: through 5000 miles of uncharted Congo, having made a secret deal with King Leopold of the Belgians. Held together, though only just, by Stanley's iron will, the expedition survives disease, desertion, hunger, hostile natives and the treachery of the notorious Arab slaver Tippoo-Tib, not to mention the hazards of the great river it must navigate. The story is as much that of Stanley's chief lieutenants as of the great explorer and Emin Pasha; and Forbath ( The River Congo ) has a knowledge of the region that helps to give his narrative, with its exciting climax and ironic finale, an impressive authenticity. Major ad/promo. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Library Journal The great explorer, Henry Morton Stanley, finder of Livingston, returns once more to the dark continent of Africa. It is 1887 and Stanley is determined to rescue Emin Pasha, leader of the last organized Egyptian force left in the Sudan, before he too, like Gordon at Khartoum, falls into the hands of the hellish dervishes. Forbath gives us a magnificent Stanley, egotistical and autocratic but blessed with an iron resolution, who will not let anything or anyone deter him. Equally glorious is Africa itself, awesome in its beauty, admirable even as it offers danger after danger to Stanley's men. Forbath has taken an intriguing piece of history and fashioned an epic adventure. Highly recommended. Lydia Burruel Johnson, Mesa P.L., Ariz.   Atlantis Found
Cussler, Clive
ISBN: 0-14-028796-5
Penguin Books Ltd  2001
12mo Paperback Dirk Pitt, indestructible hero of 14 previous Clive Cussler novels and special projects director of the National Underwater and Marine Agency (which is something like the CIA of the ocean depths), makes James Bond look like a tuxedoed, martini-swilling poser. Pitt has raised the Titanic, escaped massive volcanic eruptions, ducked nuclear explosions, foiled criminal plans for world domination, saved everyone on Earth from germ warfare and mastered the ins and outs of various electronic gizmos and futuristic vehicles while evading every imaginable form of almost certain death. (Of course, he's also wildly successful with brilliant, beautiful women, but in an admirably circumspect, sensitive-guy way.) It stands to reason Pitt's the right man to handle a crisis of millennial proportions.  Good

  The Triumph of the Sun
Smith, Wilbur
ISBN: 1-4050-0571-8
MacMillan  2005
8vo Paperback Set in colonial Egypt at the end of Victoria's reign, this sweeping romantic epic reprises Smith regulars--scions of the Courteneys and Ballantynes. (The two fictional British families have provided character fodder for least half of Smith's 30 novels.) Bloodthirsty legions of Arab dervish troops under the command of the Mahdi, or ruling successor to the Prophet Muhammad, have surrounded (but not taken) Khartoum, trapping comely 17-year-old Rebecca Benbrook; her consul general father, David; and her younger twin sisters, Saffron and Amber. The appearance of a cargo boat owned by the dashing, entrepreneurial Ryder Courteney, as well as the subsequent appearance of Capt. Penrod Ballantyne of Her Majesty's 10th Hussars, give hope. Naïve Rebecca falls in love with Ballantyne, who deflowers her before racing off to warn the rescue force commander that the commander is outnumbered 25 to one. The dervish, led by the fearsome Emir Osman Atalan, overrun Khartoum, and Rebecca's father is brutally butchered; the saga continues with Penrod heroically leading troops against Osman. Steamy romance alternates with gore, and it's all done by-the-numbers in a good way--like a junky, absorbing miniseries.  Good
