A History of Jerusalem
Gray, John
ISBN: 0709103646 Robert Hale London 1969 1st Edition 8 vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Hardcover 700 g; 336 pages, with appendices, selected bibliography, and index, illustrated with various maps and plan, as well as 32 black-and-white plates. Illustrated dustjacket. The dustjacket has several short tears on the top and bottom edge of the rear panel, and a 2 inch tear on the bottom edge of the front panel along with 2 half inch tears and associated creasing. The protective coating has started to bubble on the left-hand side of the front panel. Now protected. The present study utilises the discoveries of recent archaeology to describe the strategic significance of the site of Jerusalem and the development of the city to the present day. The great conflicts of the faith of Judaism and Christianity and Christianity and Islam are studied in the beginning of the Christian era, the Muslim conquest and in the Crusades. The monuments of the various powers and periods are also studied illustrated in figure and played for their historical as well as for their cultural value. -- The work culminates in the Arab-Zionist controversy over which the city is unhappily divided. In the otherwise obscure Turkish period an account is given of the modern Arab awakening and of the Zionist movement to facilitate an understanding of the present impasse. -- Quickly quoting the dustjacket blurb Jerusalem -- Archaeology Very Good
