The World’s Great Clocks and Watches
Jagger, Cedric
ISBN: 0600340279 The Hamlyn Publishing Group London 1977 First British Edition quarto - over 9¾" - 12" Tall Black Cloth 256 pp., includes bibliography and index; illustrated endpapers; colour illustrated dustwrapper has a 1.5" closed tear to the bottom edge. Otherwise in pretty good condition. 370 illustrations - 120 in colour - The great iron clocks of the last 13th Century were the most sophisticated pieces of machinery that had ever been made. From those first horological dinosaurs, 'accurate' to within a few hours a day, to the latest mechanical movements, whose accuracy can be counted in fractions of a second, was a long uphill road..a few sudden advances were contributed by a handful of geniuses from France, Germany, Italy, American, Japan & Britain. The author, Assistant Curator of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers' collection, traces this road with an infectious enthusiasm combined with a rare gift for explaining subtle technical matters in everyday language. After a chapter on sundials and other non-mechanical 'clocks' he takes the reader through the basic ingredients of a clock or watch, dealing with the various types of escarpment, striking and chiming mechanisms, calendarwork, etc. A chapter for each of the great period of clock & watchmaking ecxplaines the significance of the mechanical advances, describes the evolution of styles to be seen in dials & cases. All of the great makers & innovatators are here: Huygens, Tompion, Mudge, the Harrisons, Le Roy, Breguet, etc. History of contrasting technologies of America & Japan is followed by the final chapter on collectors and collecting . Many photos taken especially for this book of little known examples of the clock & watchmakers craft, a particular feature is the use of engravings from early horological books to illustrate technical points.
