First Edition. 6.7 kg; in two volumes, volume I -- XVI, + fold out chart (in perfect condition,) 428 pp., with 50 tipped in plates in colour drawn by the author, (plates XXII detached but still present. All other plates accounted for and in good condition. Volume II -- published 1911 XII, 420 pages, includes bibliography, glossary of terms, index, and plates LI -- XCIX. Both volumes also contain innumerable black-and-white line drawings. All plates are present. On page 213 there is a label for a chilblain liniment that has become stuck to the left-hand margin, otherwise, the interior of both volumes is free of major blemish. The top edge of both volumes are gilded, and the front edges and bottom edges untrimmed, with the edges now browned. Volume I has a 1.0 inch tear in the cloth central to the top edge of the spine, the rear panel of volume II and the front panel of volume I have suffered mirror damp staining/fading, and the rear panel of volume I is severely affected by water/damp damage. Nevertheless the board remains sound. This is a book for the antique dealer who wants to learn about the furniture that was available pre-world War II, and Howard developed, how was made, the timbers used, the reasons for changes in styles and fashions etc etc many of the pieces illustrated no longer exist in the open market, yet this book will enable the dedicated person to recognise the truly valuable antique from the modern reproduction. All of the volumes show: Marbled coloured end pages. The texts are illustrated with black-and-white line drawings, the occasional illustrated letter and maps. 1/4 bottle green coloured leather corners and back strip, with gilt coloured decoration to the edges of the leather edges. Five raised bands to the back strip with a red coloured leather insert to the top edge and within that leather insert gilt coloured titles. Gilt coloured decoration to the back strip also is present. Red coloured tint to the text block edges. A complete encyclopaedia from the late 19th century. Volume 1: softening and rubbing of the back strip edges with bumping to the book corners and fraying the underlying board is visible. Rubbing of the lower book edges. Some rubbing to the back back strip and a little to the book panels. Quite noticeable flecking visible to the cloth of the book panels. Foxing, quite heavy to the first few and last few pages of the book but only slightly throughout the text. The maps are complete. Volume 2: rubbing of the back strip edges and to the back strip itself, with bumping and rubbing of the book corners with the board is visible to the lower book edges. Between the three front endpaper and the title page the hinge has cracked, but, The hinges have been supported with complementary book binding tape. Lighter Browning of the first few and last few pages of the book with only the occasional foxing spot throughout the text. The map of Europe at the rear of the book has suffered insect damage as has the page preceding it. Volume 3: Rubbing of the back strip edges and to the back strip itself some of the leather of the back strip has eroded away on the rear edge. Rubbing to the book corners with the underlying board visible. Quite noticeable flecking to the book panels with quite noticeable foxing to the first few and last few pages of the book and scattered throughout the text. The maps are complete. Volume 4: softening of the back strip edges with a little fraying and there is rubbing of the length of the back strip. Rubbing, with underlying board visible to the book corners with very noticeable flecking of the front panel and less to the rear please see photograph. The red coloured tint is somewhat patchy. Foxing is quite heavy at the beginning and at the end of the book and there is foxing throughout. The New Zealand map has been damaged by insects. Volume 5: rubbing and slight fraying of the back strip edges with rubbing the full length of the back strip. The red insert between the first and second raised bands is missing. Rubbing of the book corners and the underlying board is feasible rubbing of the lower book edges and there is flecking of the boards. Light foxing to the first few and last few pages of the book with just the occasional spot throughout the maps are complete. Volume 6: rubbing of the back strip edges, lower book edges and of the book corners; the underlying board is visible to the lower book corners. Some heavy rubbing along the front edge of the leather on the front panel with light flecking of the book boards. Quite noticeable insect damage can be seen to the lower right hand corner of the front free endpaper, and to the top left hand corner of the rear free endpaper. Heavyish foxing to the first few and last few pages of the book and just the odd foxing spot within the text. The maps are complete. The front and rear hinges of all the volumes have been supported with a sympathetic coloured bookbinders paper please see photograph. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall.
