The first was to provide a handbook for the beginning amateur astronomer, a book in which all the information necessary to choose and use a small telescope was contained in one place. -- and second aim was to provide a comprehensive list of astronomical objects for the owners of small telescopes. Many publications list the non-stellar members of the universe, from the New General Catalogue (NGC) to specialised publications produced by some societies. Many of these otherwise excellent works cause frustration to the beginning astronomer. It is most annoying to read a glowing description of a galaxy, detailing its attractions and features, only to find that you need a 300 mm telescope just a glimpse it. The objects we have included in this book are all visible in telescopes with apertures 60 mm or bigger, though the large your telescope, the better the view.
